It Bas Thus Far Led to Two Nearly Sue cossful Attempts at Murder and Endless Legal Complications Effort. Judge Jamleson's CHicago, Nov, 6.—It is announced that the notorious Rawson divorce case, which bas had so many strange and startling phases during the two years it has been in the courts, is almost at an end. It is under stood among the lawyers that a compromise bas been made between the banker and his wife, and Judge Jamieson, before whom some of the issues of this extraordinary suit bave been tried, is the reported mediator, The terms of settlement are these: Mr Rawson agrees to give his wife $40,000, and her divorce suit on the ground of desertion will be allowed to go by default.” All other suits—which are legion—will be dropped. Mr. Rawson retracts his charges against his wife's character, and the criminal prosecu- tion against her for shooting Col. Whitney will be discontinued, The history of the troubles of the Rawsons would fill a book. Stephen W., Rawson is one of the wealthiest men in Chicago, and is about 64 years old. Four years ago be mar- ried Miss America I. Lee, a remarkably bandsome woman, more than twenty years his junior. She had been twice divareed, was once a treasury clerk at Washington, and before that something of a watering place belle. Mr. Rawson lived with his bride in a magnificent marble fropt resi. dence on the west side, but in a few months it was common talk that the couple did not got on well together, and ino the fall of 1856 Mr. Rawson began suit for divorce on the ground of unfaithfulness The only witness he had was a sleeping car porter, and this man afterward confessed that he bad sworn falsely, and the cass was thrown out of court. O'Shen, the Irish Leader's Falee Friend, on the Witness Stand. Loxpox, Nov. 1,-The examination of wit nesses in the Parnell inquiry proved to te much more attractive to the outside public than the address of Bir Richard Webster last week. The court room in which the commis sion sits was crowded, Capt. O'SBhea was called to the witness stand in behalf of The Times. He stated that at Mr, Parnell's request he conferred with Mr. Gladstone in June, 1881, The interview was accomplished without the knowledge of Mr, Parnell's colleagues. Negotiations were discontinued until 1882, when Messrs. Parnell and Dillon were in Kil- mainham jail, The proposals which the wit ness made to the government in 1882 were made without the authority of Mr. Parnell On the day after the Phoenix park tragedy Mr. Parnell showed the witness the anti-mur der manifesto. Mr. Parnell expressed him self as favoring the manifesto, but disliked the bombast in the document, which he said was necessary to appease the vanity of Mr, Davitt, Boven letters were here shown to the wit ness, who declared that the signatures were Mr. Parnell’s, The fac simile letter of The Thnes was shown to the witness, who was decidedly of the opinion that the writing was that of Mr Parnell He had received a number of letters from Mr. Parnell about the same date and could not mistake his signature, Loxpox, Nov, 2.—At the sitting of the Parnell commission Capt. O'Shea was re called to the witness stand. He submitted the protest, referred to in his evidence Thurs day, regarding his exclusion from parliament by Mr. Parnell The evidence given by the police reporters before the Parnell commission was decidedly favorable to the Parnellites Sir Charles Russell cross-examined them thoroughly, amd his line of questions brought out responses that indicate that the League saved the pec ple from famine and despair, and that the outrages committed in Ireland were due solely to extremists who were opposed to lawful agitation in any shape. The opinion Is now expressed that the inquiry will not continue as long as was at first thought, The very nature of the testimony given thus far, and the apparent weakness of The Times case, soem to indicate an easy and swift vio tory for Mr. Parnell and his associates, In a tavern opposite the law courts Joseph Kavanagh drew a revolver and fired a shot at Planche Cox.
