Thd latter thereupor embarked in boats and held a torchlight procession on the river beneath the walls of the prison. Seamen from the warship Banterer gave chase, but failed to captuy the serenadors, General excitement has been caused by Mr. William O'Brien's release from Tulle more jail. Bonfires and beacon lights illu minated large districts in the south of Ire land Saturday night. Kilrush was illuminated last evening and the streets were crowded with people. The Government proclama: on prohibiting the meeting announced to be held there yester day was publicly burned. All bonfires and blazing tar barrels weve extinguished by the police, There was a conflict at Kilkee between the police and the people, and one policeman was severely injured. Mr. O'Brien, who is almost prostrated with emotion, intends to attend the banquet to rest for a few weeks in accordance with his doctor's advice. In spite of the ondeav. ors to prevent his whereabouts from be. him many congratulatory letters. He is residing with a friend in Dublin, and in an interview said: “I felt so well on leaving prison that 1 have overtaxed my strength, and as a re sult I am sleepless and worn out. The National League, he continued, in. prophesied, was more éver, had been equivalent to censuring moderation of the plan of campaign. Balfour had found that the League could only be suppressed by suppressing society. The action of the Government in pros ecuting priests showed that the hopes of muzzling them by means of intrigues of Rome had been frustrated. It was an at tempt fo outrage the peoples into an ex- hibition of violence as a set-off against Bal four’'s wanton brutal ty. If Mr. Blunt had never revealed Balfour's intentions toward the Parnellites, the course pursued by the Chisf Secretary was evidence enough. believed that Balfour would push matters to extremities until public opinion daunted him, Mr. Balfour, said Mr. O'Brien, had not even mustered the conrage 10 “cough at" 1,500 of the 1.800 branches comprising the League, and the 3X0 other branches, although subjected to almost incredible police persecution, still exercised an io fluence as powerful as it had ever been. DAN DRISCOLL HANGED. The Last Act in a Bolsterous Career Closes This Morning. New Yorg, Jas. @ —Danlel Driscoll, the Whyo leader, was hanged in the Tombs yard this morning. He maintained his courage and passed through the trying ordeal with brave demeanor. The condemned man's last day on earth was full of affecting and ominous incidents. At noon yesterday the farewell lamentations of the agonized fam: ily rang through the corridors of the jail Driscoll's mother was the first to bid the unfortunate man good by. He kissed her fondly and pressed her hands between his own “God bless you, mother,” he said. “Don’t be sorry for me. Cheer up and don’t give way. you.” The poor woman wept aloud on the shoul ders of her son. Dan's brother Frank was terribly affected. His frame quivered with the effort he made to quell the outward manifestation of his grief, and his sobs were heart rending. For Hve minutes he clung about the neck of '!s doomed brother and kissed him as though he were his sister. The wife's turn came next. She cried me though her heart would break with it agony, and he folded her in his arms and kisses away her tears. Tho little baby whieh has besi so much talked about wa taken up and fondled by the luckiess father, and the sad scene came to an ond. i! i The repast cousisted of beelsteak with bread and butter. He smoked several ci gars alterward, and sat in the corridos with his keepers, chatting familiarly and without constraint. His brother, with two friends, called on him, and the brothas remained with him until 8 o'clock. The mother had applied for admission in the course of the afternoon and begged pite ously to be allowed to see her boy once more, but the keeper, under orders from Warden Walsh, would not let her in. Fathers Gelinas and Prendergast called and prayed with the condemned man. He secined devout and was grateful for their attentions. He went to bed at 12 o'clock. This morning mass was said at 6 o'clock by Father Gelinas in the chapel of the Tombs. Breakfast was then served of which he ate sparingly. Shortly afies breakfast the assistant of Joe Atkinson, the hangman, entered the cell, pinioned his arms, adjusted the fatal noose and lead him to the gallows, The only persons present were Sherifi Grant, twenty deputies, Dr. Crosby, Chap lain Loew, Father Gelinas, the hangman and his sssistant and ton newspaper men, The City Council May Be Indicted, min has filed an opinion in the case against the Mayor and Councils of this city who were arrested and put under bail some some weeks ago for failing to keep East Third street in proper repair. Broorryx, Jan. 2. fom White, better known as ‘Swipes, the Newsboy," and Billy Dempsey, at one time employed by the New York Herald, met in the ring at Fort Hamilton Saturday night, and at the close of the first round Dempsey was struck in the jaw and fell to the ground senseless, ness, and died within an hour. Dempsey was about twenty-one years old, and was married and had one child. The fight was men met they were in prime condition. It was Bwipes' fourth fight and the third he has won, though none of the others had such a fatal termination. When the fight began both men advanced smiling and made a few passes at each other, Dempsey received a few light blows in the body and reeled. As he was falling Bwipes landed a terrific blow on his jaw and the lad fell heavily to the ground. The spectators at first thought that the affair was a fizzle and began to comment on the resuld, but some one remarked that it was a serious case. Dempsey did not recover consciousness and then they became alarmed. Restora tives were used, but they were found to be of no use. In an hour afterward he was dead. The coroner was at once notified and will hold an inquest to-day. He said his as- sistant, Dr. Shephard, had examined the the dead pugilist, but in his opinion death had resulted from heart disease, He could not state positively that this was the case until the autopsy had been held. Tom White gave himself up last nigh and was locked up. He did not seem to be alarmed st his position, bur took matiers very coolly. He appeared greatly pleased, however, when Chief Campbell told him that Coroner Rooney had expressed an opinion that Dempsey’'s death was due te some organic trouble. Il Over Hor Loss.
