THE CENTRE REPORTER, FRED KURTZ... Editor. Cextee Hat, Pa, Nov, 18 1885. — SETH KINMA'NS KINDNESS. s————— He will Present Mr, Cleveland with a Rare Seat, Seth Kinman is the most noted hunter on the Pacific Slope. His home isat Ta ble Bluff, Humboit county, Cal, but the greafer portion of his time is spent in the wilds of that great State. Seth celebra- ted his seventieth birthday on the 6th of last month. He was born in Union co, this State. His early manhood was sp-nt in Illinois. In 1848 he crossed the plaivs to Oregan, where he remained two or three years. He returned to Iilinois, but in 1849 again Crossed the plains and set- tled in California, where he has made his home ever since. His fame as a Jar ing hunter and trapper is broader thau his State. He has killed tne largest grizzly ever known in the Rockeys. Fur- tape has smiled upon him and be lives a life of luxuriors ease, He bas just com pleted ajchair which he proposes to pre- gent in person to President Cleveland. In a letter to a business firm in Pittsburgh, from whom he purchases stores, he de- scribes the chair as be ng one of the fin- est bie has ever made, sithough he has completed and presented four Presiden- tial chairs. All his chairs have been fashioned from sections of wild animals, The first he presented to President Bu- chanan on May 23, 1857. The second be gave to Presideut Lincoln on November 29, 1864. The third he presented to President Johnson on September 8, 1865 and the fourth he delivered to R. B Hays on September 17, 1876. He accum- nies each gift in persun, and the oum- r of chairs presented denotes the num- ber of his visits to his native slate, The chair now ready for President Cleveland and which will be delivered goon, is formed entirely from elks cap- tured by himself, save a band of steel and some cord, The borns of six elks were used, Four horns were used for the legs; at the eud of each is attached the cloven hoofs of the animal. The seat isjconstructed by stretching an elk hide with the hair up over the steel band. The hide is secared in its place by strong cords nnderneath, which cross each other at right angles, and the whole forms an easy, comfortable seat, Anelk horn on either side forms the arms. The horn tips, which branch out from the chair most ressively, represent the thirty-eight States and ten Territories in the Union. It is highly polished aud is fit to decorate a throne, iif a Carious to think that desks and chairs kill people, bot they do. Taken in large quantities office furniture is fatal as yel- low fever. We sit 4nd write ourselves away. Sedeotary habits produce con- stipation; that begets dyspepsia, rhenma- tism and kidney trouble follow in their train, and death ends the chapter. You whose lives are passed over desk and counter and in the confined air of offices ought to keep Dr. Kennedy's * Favorit Remedy” always at hand for stomach and brain. nov or At A TERRIBLE DISASTER TO THE STEAMER ALGOMA. Only Fifteen Out of One Hundred Twenty Survive, Detroit, Mich. Nov. 11.—An Owen Bound, Ontario, dispatch says: as far as can be learned the passenger list and crew of the Algoma comprised over 120 persons. The Canadian Pacific officials are very reluctant to disclose the facts In is, however, believed that a large nom- ber of passengers were taken on st Sanl Ste. Marie. General Manager Beatty, of the Canadian Pacific, will say nothing definite as to the number lost, whileoth- er officials freely state that fully oue hundred have gone down with the ves sel. The latest list of the saved makes the total 15. The screams of the women and chil dren were heard above the fury of the storm. The crew harried bhiiher and thither, doing what they conld in the darkness to render assistance; but their efforts were of little avail, forin less thau twenty miuntes after the vessel struck, the entire forward portion of the boat was ciirried away, together with the car. go and buman freight. Several clung to the riggiog snd life live the Captain had stretched along the boat, but were §.0n swept away by the sea and swallowed up by the angry waves, The stern of the host was steadily pushed up on the rock, and those who were not too much exhausted by fatigue and benumbed by the cold crept to the after steerage and soaght its welcome shelter. Less than an hour after striking all was over. The survivors remained from the time of the disaster—4 o'clock Saturday morning—unti! Monday morn ing at 10 o'clock, exposed to the inclem- ent weather with but little foud and clothing, were at this time sighted by some ermen, who came to their res ene, After taking the shipwrecked peo- ple frum their position and placing them on the Isle Poyale, where a fire was kindled for their comfort, the flsher- men went out and intercepted the Atha- beasca, which was coming in about ten miles away. Captain Foote, of that ves- sel, i ly put about and took the sufferers on board, snd they were brought here. The bodies of Frost and Emerson were also brought in, There must be an open road between the food we eat and the substance of which our bodies are composed. If the road is or closed we sicken, faint die. is road is made up of the of digestion and ws milation, Of the stomach and liver are chief people have bad more or less ex- of the horrors of constipation, it and all its fearful sequences using Dr. Kennedy's ** Favorite Reme- y.” 1tis the first step that costs. nov Farmers in Tioga County are so dis beartened at the rotting of the potatoes they will not dig them, claiming it will not pay. W. “1 have used and Cohen, of Waco, Texas, says: your Emulsion in infantile d results. It not only re- but gives DRINKABLE SEAWATER, e— A simple plan of making sea-waler palatable would be a great boon to ma- riners cast away in boats or rafts, and also’ to our naval forces, Mr. Thomas Kay has recently shown that the banefnl effects of sea-water as a drink are chiefly due to the presence of chlorine, which is combined with sodium and magnesium, It produces thirstand scurvy, when taken in excess. In order to remove the chlor ine, he mixes sea-water with a certain proportion with eitrie acid, or silver citrate, and thus produces what may be called a mild mineral water, which is drinkable, and, being nearly free from precipitated ciilorine, is not injurious to health when taken in moderate quanti- ties. Atarecent meeting in Manchester, England, he treated a pint of water brought from beyond the Eddystone with 960 grains of citrate of silver, and four grains of free citric acid. Silver chloride was precipitated and the over- lying liquid decanted and filtered. Each fluid ounce of it contained about eighteen grains of Gitrate of soda, one-and-a-half grains of citrate of magnesia, half a sulphate of magnesia, half a grain of sulphate of lime, one-fifth grain of citric acid, and less than half a grain of unde- composed chlorides. The salts of «oda in this liquid are diuretic, the saits of magnesia aperient, hence it posesses medicinal properties. It could be safely used to moisten the tongue and throat, and drunk in small quantities. The cit- rate of silver employed to treat the water should be kept in a stoppered bottle, covered with india rubber, so as to exclude light, air, and organic matter, as it is easily decomposed. As an ounce of citrate silver converts half a pint of seawater, a man may keep alive for a day upon it. Seven ounces will, it is therefore inferred, keep him alive for s week, and it has been proposed to stow bottles of the salt under the thwarts of life-boats, and in the lockers of certain life-buoys, which carry restoratives. ——————— A Science asserts that experiments indicate the possibility of obtaining an echo from an iceberg when in a danger ous proximity to a ship. It is believed that even an object offering so small a surface as a flonting wreck may in this way be detected during a fog in time to prevent a Experiments recently made have demonstrated the feasibility of producing well-marked echoes from sailing vessels and from steamboats considerable distances away. The apparatus employed consisted of a collision, musket, to the muzzle of which a speak- ing trumpet bad been attached. This gun was aimed at passing vessels, while blank-cartridges were fired. Alter a longer or shorter time, according to the distance of the vessel, an echo was returned. SCOTT'S EMULSION OF PURE (0D LIVER OIL Bod Hypophosphies o Lime & Sotg Almost as Palatable as Milk.
