SAur FUR THE THROAT .— Iu these days, when diseases of the throat are so un rersally prevalent, and in so many cases iatal, we feel it our daty to say a word | n behalf of a most effectual if not posi- live cure for the sorethroat. For many | rears past, indeed we may say during | the whole of a life of more then forty | rears, we have been subject to a dry, hacking cough, which is not only dis- iressing to ourself, but to our friends snd those with whom we are brought mto business contact. Last fall we were induced to ty what virtue there | was in common salt. We commenced | asing it three times a day-—morning, } soon and night. We dissolved a large | ablespoonful of pure table salt in about | 3alf & small tumblerful of water, With | this we gargled the throat thoroughly | mst before meal time. The result has | peen that during the entire winter we | were not only free from coughs and rolds, but the dry, hacking cough had entirely disappeared. We attribute | these satisfactory resalts solely to the | ase of salt gargle, and most cordially | recommend a trial of it to those whoare | mbject to disease of the throat. Many | persons who have not tried the salt gar- gle have the impression that it is un- | pleasant, but after a few days’ use no | person who loves a nice, clean mouth, and a first-rate sharpecer of the appe- jite will abandon it Toxaro Sovr.— Take one quart toma- joes, one pnt hot water, a tablespoon- | ful of sugar, one tablespoonful of salt, | lour cloves, four peppercorns, one ta- blespoonful of chopped onion, one ta- | blespoonful of chopped parsley, one ta- | blespoonful of butter, two tablespoon- | Iuls of flour, This is a soup without | stock. The tomatoes are first put on with the hot water, the sugar. salt, cloves, peppercorns and omion, and let it stew till all is soft enough to straio. It will require from fifteen mmutes to half an hour, A little sugar is always a good thing in tomato soup, not to give it a sweet taste, but to take off the edge of the acid. Add the parsley to the soup. Put the butter and flour to- gether as for white sauce; add to the soup, let it cook a moment, strain and serve, Corn-starch may be used instead of flour, one-halt the quantity being gecessary. Btrain at once in a hot tu- teen and serve. Estee Weear Murrins.—For a dozen muffins there will be required a cupful and a baif of entire wheat flour, » cupful of milk, one-third of a cuplal of water, anegg, a teaspoontnl of cream of tartar, half a tesspoonful of soda, hall a teaspoonful of salt and two table- nls of sugar, Mix the dry ingre- ts and sift them into a bowl. Beat the egg until it is light, and add the milk and water to it. Pour this mix- ture upon the ingredients, and beat them quickly vigorously. Pour the batter into buttered muffin pans sod bake for twenty-five minutes in a rather quick oven, The batter will be thin and will give a moist muffin, but that is as it should be, Tosouns with Oassacn.—Use small fresh or salted tongnes for this dish; if salted tongues are used they should be soaked over night in cold water, when the tongues are ready for boiling place them over the fire ip boiling water, and boil them slowly aboutan hour, or until they are quite tender; a fable. spoonful of salt to the water if they are fresh; if they are salt they should be put over the fire in cold water.
