To-day the last doubt has been removed in regard to the cause of the horrible tragedy. It is now positively known that jealousy was the Jintipal motive. It has been learn- ed that on one occasion Laporte called at the residence of Rev, J, L, Holmes, in Tyrone, with the avowed purpose of kill- ing Miss Alice Holmes, the young lady who bad spurned his attentions. After ringing the door bell he drew a loaded revolver from his pocketand awaited the young lady’s coming. The door was for- tunately opeted by an aunt of Miss Holmes, when Laporte wheeled about abruptly, sheathed his revolver and hastened away. On the day of the mur- der he had requested a young man named Spangler to get him six morphia powders of one grain each, with which it 18 supposed he had intended to kill him- self after the commission of the deed. An eye witness to the brutal murder has been found in the person of Michael Funk, an old man pigaty years of age, who through fear of bodily harm made no effort to saye Irwin's life, Asrelated by Mr, Funk, the young men after pass ing his house engaged in a quarrel, Las porte, who was less intoxicted than Ir win, stooped suddenly in the roadwa and picked up a large stone with which be struck Irwin on the head, felling him to the ground. Laporte continued beat~ ing his victim on the head until he had smashed his face beyond recognition and fractured his skuoll in several places. Then drawing his knife from his pocket Laporte stabbed the lifeless body of Ir- win in the abdomen, and concluded his bloody work by cutting his throat from ear to ear. When found the head was held to the trunk by only a slight parti. cle of flesh, The murderer then basten- ed with all possible speed in the direos tion of his home. Instead of going home, however, Laporte slept in the woods all night, but on Friday morning surrender- ed himself to his father, the fun Judge Laporte, who delivered him over to Bheriff McAlevy the same evening.
