DrynNe Ur Cows.~8hould dairy cows b# dried off, or should they be milked up to enlving time, if they are disposed to yield milk up to that time? To answer this question pat, yes or no, woulk only betray the ignorance of the epeaker on the subject of dairymen’s practices and prejudices, We know of no subject that needs intelligent airing at the meetings of our dairymen's ns- sociation thig winter os this, It is well kubwn to all that no matter how great may bs the flow of a cow's milk when she first calves, if she goes dry too soon sire will uot prove a profitable milker, Indeed, most dairymen would be sur- prised it they wonld ouly test the ques- tion as to the yearly yield of the two cows that Jiolaed the most and least at the time of calving, This could be ap- proximated by keoping the dates of dropping calves aud going dry of the different cows in the herd, with their various yields weighed and recorded, What we started out to say was that the strange part of the subject relates to the practices and p=ejudices of dairy- men. In the country we find farmers almost universally drying up ther cows with the fear of hurling them if ‘milked up to calving time, Near the cities, where milk is sold to consumers, vo attention whatever 1s paid to the time a cow is due to calve. Bhe is simply milked as long as she will give it, and sold if she goes dry too long be- fore calving, Breeders of dairy cattle who handle high-priced cows are in grave doubt on the subject of drying off. They all know it is a dangerous practice if not done with care and diligence. If the cow 18 neglected and forms milk in her udder that is not drawn off, she is sure to suffer from the neglect, while good milkers are almost certain to give milk up to the day of calving, with a preity general opinion that it injures the calf and creates too heavy a drain on the cow, . Can our dairy expounders at tha Convention lay down a safe rule to pur- sue in this matter? Let them try it by all ‘means, Here and there on all farms and in most fruit gardens will be seen an oe- casionnl tree or grape vine which seems to lack vigor—does uot grow well, and yet geems to have no particular disease. The probabilities sre that the tree is dying of starvation and needs a liberal supply of food. When you give it its ration do not pile a load of manure argund the trunk of a tree or the body of & grape vine, This is just the place where it will do the least good, Nearest the trunk of the tree the roots are all darge., The gbrous roots, the fecders, are farther off near the end of the roots. These only ean take up the nutriment. It is always safe to assume that the roots extend as far from the truuk in every direction as do the limbs of the tree, and to properly fertilize spread the manare all over that area. Then fork it in, and you have done good and done it well, A sicR horse that cannot be induced to lie down in any other way will often take ton bed of clean, bright straw, The farmer who desires to incresse the size ana quality of his manure pile should use plenty of bedding under his stock ; ‘besides the increase of fertiliz- ers for his land ho will add much to the comfort of his stock, Whether kept in a stable or in yards, it should be provi- ded with a‘clean place to sleep in at pight and in winter, with plenty of warm,’ clean bedding. Tan advantage of grinding the cob aud corn together is not altogether in the nutriment of the cob, but because the dob, being a coarser and spotigier material, gives bulk, and divides ard separates the fine meal, so as to allow a free circulation of the gastric juice through the mass in the stomach, Corn meal, when wet with plastic dough, is very solid and net AY penetrated by any liquid; and whea pigs are fed wholly on corn meal they often suffer with fever in the stomach, because the meal Hes there too long undigested,” IspLuExZaA is ote of the most preva. lent dizeases at’ ‘this time of the year, The first stage of the disease is gener- ernlly mild,” and will readily yield to careful, nutritions diet, such as warm mashes, oatmeal, gel, suitable cloth ing and proper ventilation. If the respiration is troubled and the extrem. ities cold, give a sedative medicine, rab the legs with dry mustard, ban- dage with flannel and send for ap ex- pert, For a hose that “pulls,” uso the overcheck witli strap attached over the pose and under the lower jaw, For an extra hard-mouthed horse, use a four. ring bit, Have a side-loop on tae front of the over-check, so that it can be moved up aud down as may be required then have the check pieces and over: check attached to tho loose rings and the driving lings alone to the large rings. : ut the material two indies arc sufficient onl wet goils, 1t should not be 160 early, ees “frozen first, The ob- ject ofthe is Gob to kebp away the cold; vat to prevent thawing, which : Qosliin bis Jaid two oue " his © Rieghoms laid four, and that pao. tion of these two eggs twice ich food Was cons as the four, He gan ¥en oo EE A poarpixo-movse keeper was pur- prised to see one of her boarders one morning take the butter from his plate and knock it around the table with his fork, ““What are you doing that for?" she asked. “Madam,” replied the boarder, ‘this butter is so very strong that I find it necessary to weary it a little before eating, or it would knock out my stomach in the first round.
