The concluding paragraph is ag follows: “The paramount issue before the country is still the reform of | the national government from its sectional {usurpation and corruption. The great want of the gonntyy is co and adminiatrative reform. To stmplish this great end of sdmistrative reform all true democrats, all patriots, whether of democratic or republican antecedefits, who are willing to co-operate, should, whatever may be their differences ox other questions, unite to elect a democratic president The union of the democracy for the good of the Union is the rst step to a crowning victory that will in- aungurate an administration under which local self-government, a free and harmoni- ous play of economic forces, the just rights of states and individuals, of labor and capi- tal, will bs secured, and at the sams time the American republic shall have opened to it a career of grandeur and beneficence transcending even the glories of the past.” The official annoypcsment of the resigna- ton of John C New gs assistant secretary of the treasury now puwde fs not unexpected. Mr. New accepted tho position under what he supposed to be an ammrance that he would be expected to hold the position only a short time, ffter which he might be appointed seo- retary. At that tifne it was thought that Becretary Folger would be either promoted to some other position or would retire from the cabinet. Mr, New has since, at different timée, when It was evident that the supposed arrangement would not be made, notified the president of his desire to retire; but the pres ident last fall urged him to remain. The expenses in the ss of the late representative Haskell amount to over three thousand dollars, which is quits moderate compared with those attending the funeral of the late Thomas Allen, of Bt. Louis, and that of the late Sen. stor Hill, of Georgia. Mr. Dockery, of Missouri, is a member of the commitice, and, while be does not object to the amounts the accounts are usually diffioult to examine for the want of system in thelr makicg up From the appearance of things some of the, ferns were plainly made to cover personai expenses Bot contemplated by law or author. ized by the usages of good society on funeral oceasions, Poker playing Is one of the favorite diver sions of Washington official life. There are two clube in the war department for friendly games, Lincoln belongs to the one that has Cen. McKeever for its head Mr. Lincoln ia said to play a very steady, careful gamw, Since Gen. Bheridan's arrival a second club has been formed. Sher.dan is a vory stropg player, playing much as he fougut—with a great deal of decishan and dash, Col. Mike Sheridan, the post of the generals stafl, is also a very good player. The most active and enthusiastic of the of. ficial poker clubs, however, is in the post of- fice department, and Messrs. Gresham, El mer and Hatton are the threes leading play- ers. Judge Gresham plays a very level headed, careful game, but Frank Hatton is considered tho Dest player in the depart ment, The house committees on military affairs today agreed to report a bill retiring Henry J. The senate chamber was crowded, a number of ladies being pres ent. Mr. Newberry opened {no support of the measures and made a flerce onslaught upen Mahone, whom he termed a vile slanderer of Virginia. He arraigned him for leaving his seat in the last congress and taking up abode in Richmond for the purpose of dic tating to the legislature; for assuming to himself an air of authoritf foreign to the customs of a free people, and for making the legislature pass laws to advance his own ine terest and gratify his insasinted greed for plunder, place and power. “Think of it for 8 moment, Mr. President and segators,” said the speaker, “and then bite your lips and bang your heads in shame, and with uplifted hand and a firm resolve let us swear that the like shall never bo again in this our father's house. Let the seal of our condemnation be placed upon it. It is a blight on the fair name of Virginia, an insuit to the manhood of her people, and such conduct is without a par allel in her history, and, so far as | know, is without a parallel in this great nation. Itis an {nsult to the virtue and intelligence of a free people, and a usurpation of a power not to be tolerated under any circumstances Every instinct of our nature and every emo- tion of our souls revolts at the thought of a petty tyrant and puny boss advertising us to the world and crying out in a squeaking tone of volo; ‘Virginia for sie! Who'll buy, who'll buy?" Yes, Mr. Prosident, Virginia was offered for sale and was sold, But thank God she was not delivered. Though fettered and bound as she was, she is still free, She has broken the withes of stalwartisms with which she was bound, and her brave and noble people are free. And, sir, permit me to say bere, that they have been down tothe Jordan of democracy and washed their hands of the leprous taint of bossism and bave consecrated their hearts anew to the cause of human freedom and mean to strike for g higher and a purer Anglo-Baxon clvill sation.” The speaker at some length argued to show that Mahone, while ho wad being elect- ad to the United States senate as a demo crat, was intriguing with Grant and Cam- eron and giving assurances that he would cast the readjuster influence for Grant, He charged further that, being elected as a dempcrat to represeat a democratic peoples, Mabone bad now gone over to the repub- licans, if they would bave him. Ile has made Virginia a mere pocket borough in the bands of a trading politician whose van- ity bas outgrown his discretion and whose patriotism is measured by his purse. The speaker bitterly anstbomatized Mahone as a traitor and tradacer, who bad spread abroad liss about bloodshed in Virginia. Mr New. berry sald this was ons of the most peaceful and law-abiding states in the Union. He in sMted that the people of Virginia bad the right to demand Mahono's resignation, tis Story Not Credited, Avsuny, N. Y., Jan 24 Testimony in the Petmelly trial has closed. The prisoner testified that Miss Froitzhelm, a woman nearly fifty years old, had made overtures of love to hiro. She and the prisoner, who is only twenty two years old, spent two days in a Syracuse novel. The woman registered and paid all the bills for hotel and livery, He went to the dead woman's house June 1 at her urgent luvitation, she not knowing that the prisoner had been married two months to a beautiful girl, who is present in court, The dead woman demanded that the prisoner should that day fly fo the wet. He refused, telling ber {or the first time be was married, She became wild with rage and jealousy. She sprang at him, clutched and struck him, until be drew a revolver to scare her. Bat she got the pistol from him and said: “if ] can’t live with you, I will have you die with me.” Althat moment the prisoner picked ap & hatchet in the kitchen and struck ber upon the bead, He fled, taking an overcoat in which ho says there was a bank book on which be tried to get money in Albany, and was arrested, This is his story, bul the pro. secution has clearly fastened robbery upon the man charged with murder. ——— Poultry Exhibition, New York, Jan, 24 The second annual exhibition of the Fanciers’ show which is in at the Madison Bquare Garden, turkeys, peasants, pigs, bite, ferrets, ste. bosides several interesting specimens of artificial incubltion, Judging began last evening and the open- ing awards will be made today. How Watch Cases are Made. —— This process of manufacture was invented by James Boss, who started in business in 1854, and the methods and tools used. in making these watch cases are covered by patents. This is the only watch case made wnder this process, For many years the in- troduction of these goods was slow, owing to popular prejudice against “plated” goods, but gradually the public learned that the James Doss’ Gold Watch Chse was not a cheap gold-washed or eleMro-plated article, but was made of genuine gold plates of standard quality and thickness, Conscientious adherence to the determination to make the best watch case ever put on the market, and the adoption of every improvement suggested, has made the James Doss’ Gold Watch Case the STANDARD, In this watch case the parts most subject to wear—the bow, erown, hinges, thumb-caiches, etc., are made of SOLID GOLD.
