Religious Excitement.
Boston, May 2. —Some time yester
day Charles F. Freeman, of I'ocosset,
Mi,, in a freak of religious frenzy
killed his five-year-old daughter,
Edith. Tho man ia a Second Adveo
tist and has become greatly excited
dur ngtiie iat few days while attend
ing a series of revival meetings.
About a week ago he claimed to have
received a "wonderful revelation."
and has not eaten or slept since. He
say* that the Lord directed him to
sicntiee hie little daughter, aud de
clares thai she will ri-c again iu three
days. The little nne was transfixed
with a knife by her insane father and
het blood was ponre<l out upoh a ta
ble which was improvised as an al
tar.
hurther particulars are that Frer-ji
man, who is the mail carrier at Po- '
casset between the railroad station |
au<! post office, woke jus wife at 3:30;
o'clock on Thursday morning and
told her he must make a sacrifice to
the Lord of his youDgnt daughter.
He gd up and took the child from
her bed and stabbed her in the side
with a butcher knife, causing her'
death. liis wife said it was all rightj
and that Abraham would raise hert
up next Sunday. Freeman says the;,
child gave one scream and died a
minute afterwards. It is stated that
the Second Advcntisls held a meeting
at Freeman's house the same alter*
noon and appeared to wish the affair
kept quiet. Freeman carried the mail
as usual and showed no signs of in
sanity. The cause of the terriblcdeed
appears to be religious excitement
alone. Freeman is now at his resi
dence in charge of Officer Redding.
The Funeral. —The funeral of th i
victim took place on 4th. Davis, a
sympathizer of Freeman in the deed.i
deposited the coffin near the altar in
the M. K. church und announced his
intention to uddress the audience, but
not peamitted. The Adventists, who
in* their bliud superstition fully be*
lieved that the dead child would be
resurrected or bodily translated to
heaven, are deeply mortified at the
failure of their prophesy.
