In the afternoon in the space of one hour
tho sea rose and fell three time* with a

swept completely over Cocoanut Island,

| The volcano c f Kilauea has been unusually
active of late A steamer arriv ing at Hilo
1 on Wednesday, May 2, reports thai as she
passed down the coa-t on the follow ing
night tho light of tho crater was unusually
brilliant. On Friday at 3:45 p. m. several,
pretty severe earthquake shocks wero felt,
followed a few minutes later by n jet of
lava thrown up fr im the floor of the crater
near the eat hank through a crack which
had evidently born made by tbo earth-'
quake. Tho lava continued to spout at
this place, gradually ascending a tleep
bluff to its summit, then moving along the
isthmus and connecting the larg. crater
with the smaller one of Kdaueaki, down
into the pit ef which tho lava ran. This
continued for six hours, the lava being
thrown up in numorousjets along the line
at different height*, at times reaching ICO
feet. Frequently there would bo at least
fifty of these jet* at once, making a mag
nificent display. The locality of thi*
eruption ar.d it* general characteristics ap
pear to be identically the same as those of
1832, l!* 10 and li*'>B. Simultaneously with
tho appearance of tli< so fires those of old
South Lake were suddenly extinguished,
and f>r two days following no fires were
seen on Kiloua.
