On Friday at 3:45 p. m. several, pretty severe earthquake shocks wero felt, followed a few minutes later by n jet of lava thrown up fr im the floor of the crater near the eat hank through a crack which had evidently born made by tbo earth-' quake. Tho lava continued to spout at this place, gradually ascending a tleep bluff to its summit, then moving along the isthmus and connecting the larg. crater with the smaller one of Kdaueaki, down into the pit ef which tho lava ran.
