the.iftttpslutro qtnitpiler FRIDAY', MA ROI 11, 11111 Gt. A - SSW 'MEAT The following•ltem from the _Lewis town Casette will be of interest to our farmer readers:— BOCK WHEAT.—Some years ago a fine stalk of wheat was found growing among . the rocks on Shade Mountain, which when ripe , was plucked by Mr. Miller and handed to Joseph Krick, of Deanna township, who has been raising It since, and last fall sowed about Ibur bushels, so that, should it oonUnue to yield as it Liu done, nett year will enable .11 number of farmers to undertake Its cultivation. It la a white wheat, with strung straw, remarkably compact beads, grains thin-shelled, and produced at the rate °fail bushels to the acre, while other "wbeat In similar ground on the Milne farm averaged under 16 bushels. TKO POINT OP . IICIETT: 01 IN APPLYING MANICRIL The point to consider in the applies tit"; of raw manure is Its speedy fermen tation. This Is effected readily by sur face application, In which case it under got, decomposition in a short time. The sun has a direct influence upon it, which causes this. Settee It is that surface ap plication is Doltishly beneficial, for with out decomposition there is little . benefit in manure; it is 'a hindrance rather.— "But, the heat decomposing, and the rains washing it in, the mirk is done. The next best thing, if ootegnally ae good, and even better perhaps, is to ap ply on tLe-surface of ploughed ground and harrow In. This mixes, It with the top soli emit exposes It to thp direct rays of the sun, the soil increasing, If .anz thing, the heat, and this, in connection with the Increased molbtore, increasing and accelerating the fermentation. This practice never fails. It is always found to be goadl-and good whether It be rot ted inner, providing It can be properly mixed with the soil. The secret in both these cases is, the sun has its effect. Ploughed in deep, there is a different result—not always successful, especially in cold sells, or In wit seasons. Heat and proper hygro metric condition are necessary. This, then, is the secret, that we must expose our manures to heat, and the nearer the surface, the more heat b and ,the more fermentation. We have had our best success with manure harrowed in. On meadows - , top-dressing Is the only way; and the time of application, It is agreed, is the fall or latter part of the Hammer, when the heat has still its effect and the rains help it. Het deep ploughing under `fill keep the manure es It, goes into the ground, and will put it, If left there, out of reach of the grasses and light-rooting , grains. It is simply hid. It can be of benefit (deep irpthe ground) only when the soli is porous arid of a sandy and dark or heat-attracting nature and the season a warm one. In such summers we have known the best of effect, where long ma nure was plentifully used, and made a bed for the Indian corn, or roar. The safe and certain way, howeyer, is top-application. There may W some loss, which may not be the case where the ground covers the manure. But har rowed in well, if not too long, or plowed shallow-,a mere covering up where there is much straw—and there will be a cer tain and Immediate benefit; Immediate if applied In the heat of summer, and never falling hilts effect. For corn, in a black seedy soli warmly located, we prefer to plough under. For \roots' also. Otherwise not.—Eschange. TUE lowa Fitlle Sentinel has discover ed a plan to prevent cows from stealiug hay. Theeditor thus deseribeilt: 'A aertalstquadruped had a sweet.tooth for onrhay-stack and did much damage —.throwing down the even rail fence and, roosting In our hay. We bought box bt-tayenne pepper, took a Mee lock of hay, placed it outside, "baptized'-' it with pepper, and watched. The ani mal came along and pitched into the hay, when suddenly Ole took the hint, and with nose at 45 degrees and tail at IN) degrees,'her soul went "marching on" at the rate of 210.
