On Monday morning as the Hastings train from Cresson, w h: -h is due here at lo-.o.".. was w ithin three hundred yards of the depot it suddenly left the main track ana Iook to I lie siuing inai i uus iiiiunn (Jrillith's lumberyard. On the siding w ithin a couple of rods of the switch stood four freight cars, three of of them loaded with lumber and the other one with hemlock bark. On one of the lumber cars were Elijah Maliau. George M akin and a young man named Good, who were unloading lumber. 1 he Hastings train was running at a rate of about :tf) miles an hour and it was but a moment, too short a time for the engineer to stop or reverse hisengine, until it struck the bark car with a crash that could lie heard for several squares, and w ith an im petus that sent the lirst lumber car several rods, only stopping when it crashed into a shed in the rear of Webster Griffith's saw mill. The front end of the engine, after the shock, presented a dilapidated appearance, with its cow catcher broken and twisted and the whole ft out caved in. On the en gine were Engineer Harry Hibbs. who es caped any serious injury, and Freman W. P. Shiver, of Monster, who was badly hurt alMiut the head by being thrown against the boiler, and will in all probability lose the sight of liis left eye. He was taken to the Mountain House where Dr. Jones dressed his injuries and in ttie afternoon was taken to the Altoona hospital. John toreman, a mail agent of t reson. was slightly hurt about t lie head and body; Michael Myers, oi liuy, a passenger, was hurt about the head; S. C. C hild. of Har rishurg, a passenger, had his eye hurt and a scalp wound, and 1 homas Rarnes. the weli-known coal operator of Philipsburg. had a cut on his chin. A number of others were baJly shaken up and bruised but none seriously. One passenger, whose whose name we failed to learn, who was sitting next to the closet, was thrown with such force that bis head bursted a panel thronch. He had on a stiff hat and it is siioi.osed that it saved him as he w as not seriously hurt. Malian, Makin and Good, who were working on the lumber cars, were thrown down but escaped injury. The accident was caused by an open switch, but w hether left open by an em tiloye of the road or by some one tamper ing with it has not yet been dee!oped An investigation will le made by the com panv and the responsibility for the acci dent placed placed. Since the above was in type we leirn that on Wednesday Rrakeman Josepl; Piper and Conductor Janies Rush, or this place, were indefinitely suspended by the tailroad company. Rrakeman Piper is said to have thoughtlessly left the switch open after a car was dropped In. ('mm n titration. Ebensburg, l'a.f February 22, IS'.C Ml:. Editor: It is an old and conceded fact that every community IsaMicted with a cronie crank, or a cronic growler, or a cronic liar or some one who is continually stirring up some strife, or causing enmity betweeu neighbors and many other evils too numerous to mention. Now it seems Ebensburg is not an exception to this af fliction. I notice by a communication published in the Fhkkman" signed "Citi zen," on February l.th, that we have a person in our midst whocan fill this hill of atlliction on the citizens of Ebensburg to perfection in every particular. He lirst starts out and cleanses himself in an imaginary sewer which lie opposes the construction of at the taxpayers' ex pense because he happens to live in a part of I lie town where he would not be the only one to receive all the benefit of it ns-. yet this citizen evidently favors the bo rou nh council expending $1.4Kt per year of the taxpayers" money for electric light that lights our stieets only a small portion of the time except on moonlight nights and after midnight when every body is or shou!d lie in bed. After writing on the subject enough as he thinks, to elect his candidate for town counc il, (and who for other causes was elected ) he concludes to concoct something to elect his school di rector, so he scoops down on the scoool directors and the public school building which was erected three years ago. He calls it a monument although not a last ing one to the directors who had it built. He has the audacity to assert that the north wall is giving away and the building is or soon will tie unsate lor use. .o I pre nice this, and so will any one with half an eye, to be an absolute and a ma licious falsehood. Now 1 happened to be one of the six directors at the time our public School building was erected three years ago, and I spent more lime in watch ing its construction than all the other di rectors put toget her. And 1 admit that there w.re some tilings about the building that I thought were not as substantial, or done in as a mechanicial like manner as thev should be, and 1 frequently called the attention of the contractor and some of the other directors to it, until liuallv I got very impudently snubbed by one of them. Witti this and receiving ho co-operation from the other directors. 1 got disgusted and concluded I would not remain on the board and have any hand in taking the job ofT the contractors hands. I therefore re signed my ollice as diieclor before the building was fully completed, as I was virtually only a blank on the board. Rut I never uttered one word of complaint un til this citizen's falsehood appeared in the Fi;kkm a N. I opposed at lirst the employ ment of the architect on a.'count of his be ing quite a young man and was not a prac tical mechanic. Therefore, I thought he was not capable of making the proper specification and superintending the erec tion of a building of this kind, of which I was further convinced as the work pro gressed. Rut afler all, w here will you lind a large building or any other large structure that there will not be some little details that are not as substantial and mechanical-like as it should he. Take for instance, our government buildings in Chi cago and other places. City Hall, in Phila delphia. State House. Albar.y, N. Y., and many other large buildings that cost many millions of dollars, that have been planed and creeled by the greatest architects and men of most experience and best judgment the country can produce and yet in a short time they w ill show signs of giving aw -ay and in some instances had to be abandon ed. The causes of which were iinforseeu and consequently were not guarded against, yet there are cranks w ho w ill stand up and say. "I told you o." P.ul his "citizen s Islselnxnis Jul not accompllsii Ills nesire in eiecin.g nis cnoice for director, although had lie been a calldi date on the Republican ticket, I would surely have voted for him but as it was they could not ai!l I pre-iime did not ex pcet me to do so. Ttiey are both men w hi.se honor, integrity and character are above lenroaeh. Thev are an honor and a light to Ebensburg and are men who would not onlv refuse 'o sanction but would scorn an act like this citizen's communi cation lo secure votes for their election Therefore it is evident he resorted to thi: means for his own interest on one hand and prejudice on the other. These are of- fi. es thai no one need a-pire to further than a willingness to lend a he'ping hand and bear their share of the burdens i.i the management of t he affairs of our Imroiigh and public schools. This citizen's injiiii ous communication has caused several parents to keep their children from their needed schooling through a tear oi Ills so called death trap without tirst investiga ting the trutiifu.iiess or falsity of his as sertion. It is common in most targe buildings for t lie plastering crack some in some of the corners t hrough shrinkage of plastering and heavy joice, especially w hen placed in position, green from the mill as many were in our building. Aim our ouiuiing was lastered with ctnent plastering which as not the elasticity and suppleness that lime inorter lias, yet is extensively used. Rut our school building is standing as afe and Solid as any building in the coun ty as an honor to the taxpayers of Lben burg school district, the foundation jr any of the walls not showing the least signs of iny giving awav or falling down. This citizen evidently knew Ids asser tions, published on i ne eve oi i ne en i ion ... . , . i . r . i ..I , : . were false, as lie was ashamed to sign his 'nature to his communication but might more appropriately nave mncu u . . i .. ; 1 : . Smile in the f.'rii. ."' Rut our publir chool building w ill stand as solid as the p. irk ot Gibraltar, as a monument to the falsehood ot this citizen long after he is in the grave. Mr. Editor. I have lengthened this com munication out much longer than I intend ed, but I cannot lind a stopping place, but allow me yet losay that our public school building was erected at a cost to the tax payers of from five to ten thousand dollars les than some other similar buildings I have visited, tiiat were no larger and ap parently no betterconstructed and no more exnense to the contractor (but w as to the taxpayers) than ours. Citizen savs we gave the building to a favorite contractor w lien the ract is we gave the contract to the one whose bid was the only one that comtt within t lie limit ot . i . i... a- r means lo ereci. i uiinst- ua.i - given the contract to one of the otiier bid ders. then this cronic growler would have set up a howl because, we gave two or three thousand dollars more to a favorite con tractor than the lowest, bidder, but as this seems to the naturo of this -rank he w ill not be held responsible for it.
