The officers of the First National bank of Hollidaysburg. expect that the bank will resume business on Tuesday. January All the claims will be paid in full and the capital of the bank restored to its legal amount. This was the information received by Comptroller Eckles, from the receiver who has been in charge of the af fairs of the bank since it closed its doors in December. The secretary of the commonwealth recently addressed the attorney general's department, asking whether the tenth sec tion of the Act of June 10. 1S3. which regulator the nomination and election of public oflicers. as amended. by the Act of June 26, 115, (P. L.. 3U2.) requires a sheriff to nave a "fac simile" of the official ballot published as part of the general election proclamation. Deputy-Attorney-General Elkin to-day stated that only the oflicers need be enumerated, and no "fac-simile" ballot is required. Here is an item for the farm boys, from the Germantown Telegraph: The state ment was made in one of the daily papers recently that, according to the testimony of real estate dealers in the interior of the state, there is a very decided increase in the demand for farms and that the demand comes largely from those who have moved into the cities years ago. If this tie true, it is an encouraging item of news. Out of ten who leave the farm to make their way in the city eight would certainly have done better had they remained at home. Mr. Robert Rrooks. a civil engineer in tt e employ of the Pennsylvania railroad, and well and favorable known in Ebens burg, where he resided during the building of the Klacklick railroad, died at Lilly on Wednesday morning from pneumonia after a short illness. Thedeceased was married on the 21st day of October last to Miss Margaret Dunegan, daughter of E. R. Dunegan. Esq.. of St. Augustine, and since that time the young couple have made their residence at Lilly where Mr. Rrooks was employed on the new rail road work at thai, place. A tire broke out in a dwelling- house owned by the Elk Tanning company at Cnrwensville, on Tuesday evening, occu pied by Moses Watson and John Webb, both colored with their families. Mrs. Webb had gone to the store and left her four children in the house, their ages beitg six, four, and two years, and a baby. All were burned to death. The fireman did effective work, and when the fire was quenched a search was made for the bodies. They were found, but were burned almost beyond recognition. The origin of the tiie is unknown. It is the first instance in that village in which human life has been lost bv fire. 1 h Cold Nnnp. On Sunday '-lie coldest spell of weather of the winter was ushered in. the ther mometer showing on Monday that the mercury had dropped to fourteen degrees below zero, in Ebensburg, and up until to day (Thursday,) when it registered six de grees below, it has been under the zero mark ever since, in the early nunnings. As a consequence water pipes in all parts of the town have been frozen up and bursting and the plnmmers are the only class of people who seem lo enjoy the situ ation. The Fkke.man oflice has had its share of trouble along with the rest, as about one-half the tiina of the oflice forcea for the past several days has beeu spent in keeping up fires and thawing out water and steam pipes. We are under obligations to Mr. A. L. Hose, proprietor of the Rose 'Wrench fac tory, in this place, for his promptitude In making the repairs made necessary by the bursting ot several pipes and valves con nected with our engine. He is prompt and abliging. as well as a skillful mechanic and when it conies to repairing machinery he is the right man in the right place. )larrlax Llcenmn. The institution must be capable of holding five hundred prisoners, and must be erect ed at or near Harrisburg. Seven commis sioners are to be appointed by the gover nor to select a site of not more than ten acres and to have charge of the erection. Five hundred dollars is appropriated for the purchase of the site and the erection of the building. farmer's Institute. The Farmers' institute at this place ODened at 1:30 o'clock p.m. Friday, the gathering being called to older by Hou. J. J. Thomas. Ancouncments of vice presidents were made by the County institute committee, consisting of John Lloyd, representing the Ebensburg Agricultural society: U. J. Krumenacher, the Carrolltown Agricul tural society, and Joseph O. Thomas, rep resenting the Grange. The vice presidents named were: Daniel J. Davis, John J. Dayis, Joht M. Hughes. A. A. Barker, James Perry, Ira Bloom. David D. Lewis and George Huntlev. John McCormick was elected secretary. aud Thomas W. Hughes, query manager. An address of welcome was then made by Hon. A. A. Barker and responded to by Hon. Alva Agee, after which the regular programme was taken up. Hon. Alva Agee spoke on potato culture after which Mr. Hess spoke on fertilizers, explaining the meaning of the analysis found on each sack of commercial fertil izer, and the use of each ingredient.- County Commissionei Abraham Hostel ler read an essay on "Fruit Growing for Pleasure and Profit," and answered several Interrogatories on the subject, as did also Messrs. Wertz and McCormick. Dr. Mot hi ock made an eloquent appeal for rural high schools, declaring that the question of expense should not deter lis. as doubtless the reason why many or our young folks were leaving the farm is for the greater educational advantages to be found in the cities, and he formulated a plan for the establishing of a high school in each township, or a number of adjacent townships. Mr. McCormick spoke of higher educa tion for the girls and boys in our covin try schools. Hon. Frank II. Moore, of Bradford county. Pure Food Commissioner of Western Pennsylvania, lectured on th pure food question, giying some astonish revelations with reference to to the adul teration of at tides of food. Dr. Rothrock lectured on "The Relation of the Forestry Question to the Common wealth." Owing partly, no doubt, to the inclem ency of the weather a howling blizzard prevailing the attendance at Ebensburg was not so large as at Wilmore. Hon. A. A. Barker recited the famous address of Lincoln at Gettysburg. i Saturday afternoon the attendance was larger, and several addresses were deliver ed by the instructors and numerous queries were answered. A resolution was passed asking the leg islature to ei.act a law for the payment of a bounty on fox scalps. Over a Hrerlplrri. About 10 o'clock on Monday evening a sledding party of ) peisons fron Tyrone drove into a quarry at Pemberton, six miles below that place. The scene beg gared description. The party was most ly made up of young people under 21 years of age. Boys and girl with arms and legs broken and with blood streaming from their wounds lay in great drifts of snow, slowly perishing from the intense cold. The mercury stood at 3 degrees below zero, ad ding to the horror of the catastrophe. Latest reports say that none are dead. though about -t are Injured. The following is a partial list: Alice Hadden, of Little Washington; Jessie Stone, Bellefonte; Eugene Crampton, Ty rone; Howard Templeton and William Jones also of Tyrone. These are badly in jured, but the exact nature of their wounds cannot be learned. The special train f.-om the scene of the accident arrived in Tyrone at 11:30 p. m., bearing the injured. At 11 o'clock on SalurJay morning the frame house occupied by William Croyle in Bedford, Pa., was discovered to bn on Are, and before an alarm could be given tne entire structure was enveloped in flames. Mrs. Croyle succeeded in throwing two of the children out of the window to their father. It is supposed she went back to get the two other children and was suffo cated, for she disappeared from the win dow and was not seen again. When the dead bodies of the mother and children were taken from the ruins of the house nothing but the trunks remained, the legs, arms and head having been burn ed off. The two weeks old baby, which was thrown out of the window, is so severely burned that it will probably die. The father was also buined about the head and arms. OILS! OILS!
