In August summer apples will have ripened and everybody ought to known that the best thing he can do is to eat ap ples just before retiring for the night. Persons uninitiated in the mysleriesof the fruit are liable to throw up their hands in horror at the vision of dyspepsia which such a suggestion may summon up. but no harm can come even to a delicate system by the eating of ripe and juicy apples just be fore going to bed. The apple is an excellent brain food because It has mote phosphoric acid in easily digested shapes than other fruits. It excites the action of the liver, promote sound and healthy sleep and thoroughly disinfects the mouth. This is not all. The apple helps the kid ney secretions and prevents calculous growths, while it obviates indigestion ami is one of the best know preventives of dis eases of tin-throat. There n ay be but few that know it, but Carrolltown has one of the best marksmen in this section of the slate, especially as a quick shot. The person is Ed. Millet, w ho lives about a half mile from town. A short time ago he gave an exhibition of his skill in the presence f a few Carrolltown men. and to say that they were surprised would be putting in mildly. He used a calibre ritle. Pennies tossed iu the air would be rarely missed. A match held in position was nipped off piece by piece by successive shots. A common playing caid held in the hands of his brother was cut iu two, the ball striking il edgewise. This feat was performed repeatedly at a dis tance of 4n feet. Seven shots were put through the spot on the ace of clubs, none of w Inch were out of the color of the spot. This was all tapid shooting. I Tim I'i'ar ofThnnilrr, Electric storms are far less dangerous that the majority ( the people imagine, writes Edward W. link in the l.ivlicx' llmnc Jiniriiiil. That a severe lightning storm is terrifying admits of no question, and w ill sometimes bring nneasit.ess to t he heart of l he strongest man. Tut, Un real danger isslight. Thechatice of light ning striking a house, for example, is not one in a million. Particularly is this true in cities, stiuug ns most of tbeni are Willi electric wires. The greater danger from electric storms is in the country, and even there the danger may be lessened if the simplest and mosi commou-sciiM' precn tions are exercised. The surest clectiic conduction js a draught, and if, when a thunder storm approaches, it. is seen that all windows and doors liable .UMiccashui a draught are kept closed, the danger is ,u once reduced to a minimum. If a woman is caught out in a thunder storm the safest shelter is a house; the most dangerous a Tree, particularly an o-ik tree. Ii is peculiar, but neyert heless a proven fact, that the oak is the most sus ceptible of all the trees to a currenl of electricity. Over fifty per cent, of trees struck by lightning storms dining the summer, the government statistician lei's us, were oaks, w hile tbe beach tree was the least hamuli. Therefore. Ihe worst possible place of shelter during the elect ric storm is under an oak tree, while by all odds the safest place is in a house and out of a draught. The actual danger (from an electric storini is, in truth, not from the lightning nor the thtifder, but I re m the nervous condition into into into which women allow t hem-elves to (all. And this is a danger which they can avoid. A little calm thought and a fen grains of common sense w ill do it. I.liofl In ! Inst I rnlnr; .
