The construction of a temporary tan- house was commenced at once, and the work of pumping fresh air into the mine will mhih begin. It is haraly pos sible that anv of the miners are still alive, but tin- starting of the fans wil; be made as soon as possible, so that it any have survived they may be Kepi alive till help reaches them. The only man who got out of the mines at the time of the explosion was Edward Welch, who was near the month of the tunnell, and was blown out, his skull fractured, arm broken, face badly cut and burned and all the hair burner, from his head. He was breathing when found, but expired shortly after with- nnt showinfr consciousness. Between iiO and men were in the mine at the time, and all are supposed to have perished. It is thought the disaster may have Tieen caused by the breaking into an immense pocket of gas generated by tires that are continually burning in the mines. On Feb. i State Coal Mine Tiisnctor Griffith inspected the mine and pronounced it in splendid condi tion. and the work is said to have bee; done at all times in the most carefu! manner.
