HARRISON .MAY TAKE NOMINATION the Good ol It Julin W. If It I rnniron ami the Party lremaiid Letter Wm Pinal. Foter Say the Ilabn Is Jubilant TCiitxnTOX. Feb. 5. General Har- jn' letter of withdrawal from the presidential race, has given considerable impetus to juditical work about the capitol. Friends of Reed, Morton. ;uc- Kinley and Allison are encourages oy the letter. Mr. Diugley of Maine, who is Speaker Reed's closest friend in the house was reluctant to say more about Ganer.il Harrison's letter than it undoubtedly re moved him from the field as a presi dential factor. Senator Hansbrongh, whole, a strong advocate of the nomination of Senator Davis, said he thought the withdrawal of General Harrison would benefit the Minnesota candidate very much. Mr. Hepburn of Iowa said: "Harri son has always recognized the aid given him in lsss by the immediate friends of Allison at a critical period of his candi dacy. He has a high regard for the the ability of the senator, as was evinced by the earnest demand he made that the senator should be a member of his cabinet as secretary of the treasury in 18-VJ and which demand would have been accened to, but for the protest of the Republicans of Iowa, who were un willing to lose him from the senate. General L. T. Michener, well known as an old-time friend of General Harri son and one who had much to do with iris nomination, said. "1 do not Know what Indiana will do, but I imagine that all the candidates will develop strength there, esjH-cially Mr. McKinley and Mr. Allison. The manufacturing centers will prolwibly le disiatsod to sup port Mr. McKinley, "while the otner sec tions, I should think, would le very likelv to go to Mr. Allison or Mr. Mor ton. " It seems to me that Mr. Allison would naturally have considerable sup port from the state, not only as a matter of gratitude for the timely and efficient support which General Harrison received from the Allison men in the national convention of 1HKS, but also because his conceded abilities and known conserva- tive characteristics ana views womu make him particularly satisfactory to those friends of General Harrison who were drawn to him Ix-canse of his pos session of the same qualities. "No extremist or representative of ex treme views has ever leen elected presi dent of the United States. The conser vative and cautious voters of this coun try hold the balance of power and elect its presidents. To such people I Ix lieve the candidacy of Mr. Allison will be par ticularly agreeable, and I anticipate that many of the old-time friends and sup porters of General Harrison, in various parts of the country, will be found ad vocating the nomination of Mr. Alli son." When asked if there was any contin gency in which Harrison might accept. General Michener said : "If it should appear that the nomina tion of General Harrison would be abso lutely essential to party harmony or party success, or to the peace and pros perity of the country, I have no doubt that the friends of General Harrison would urge his nomination in the con vention, and if nominated in such cir cumstances I don't see how he could de cline. The duty to accept it would seem to be as apparent as was his duty to take the sword in defense of his coun try in 1862. He has never failed to re spond to the call of public duty. At the same time I have not the slightest doubt that it is the earnest wish that the nom ination should go elsewhere." Hon. John W. Foster, who succeeded Mr. Blaine as secretary of state in Pres ident Harrison's cabinet, said he thought the ex-president's declination was final. M'KINLEY'S ELECTION CERTAIN. Uahn Think So and Wants an F.arly Conventi4tn In Ohio. Coixmbi s, Feb. 5. William M. Hahn, secretary of the Republican national committee says the declination of Har rison makes McKinley's nomination and election sure. Mr. Hahn favois the holdinp of the Ohio convention in March, to show the country that this state is a unit for Mc Kinley. He favors Sherman, Foraker. Bushnell and Grosvenor for deh-gates-at- large Warner Miller's Opinion. New York. Feb. 5. "The effect o. Gentral Harrison's action upon Gov ernot Morton's prospects," Add ex-Senator Miller, "can hardly be other than helpful. He and the governor are friends, and have mailt friends in com mon. It seems to me that the general's followers should turn instinctively to the governor, now that their own leader has withdrawn from the field. At all events the Harrison letter will add new force and determination to the move ment for Governor Morton's nomina tion." Switzerland Agrees tw Arbitrate. Berxe, Switzerland. Feb. 5.
