action of the county auditors in surcharg

town on Monday morning selling apples to
the families who wanted them. They

Michael Nagle, a former resident of
this county, died at the residence of Jacob
Mouse, in West Wheatlield township, In
diana county, I'a., on Sunday August isth,
aged 77 years. He is survived by a son,
Kdward Xagle, of Dean lowtishiu: a
daughter, Lucinda Mouse, of Indiana
county; a brother. John, of Cleai lield towu--hip.
and by three sisters, Mrs. Julia
Kime, Mrs. Susan I'liinket and Mrs.
Margaret MctJottgh. of Ai'.oona. His re
mains were interred at Ashville.
Kosana. wife of William Uod.la, died
of Krighl's disease at her home in t;al
litin on Saturday morning, aged about M

A queer state of atTair has arisen in
iallllin. w hi. h was recently the seat of
so much trouble between the Sisters of St.
Joseph and the American Mechanics.
After the garb bill passed the school di
rectors iii-i-l.-d upon employing the i-isters
to teach in the public school building re
trardless of conseiiieiices. but the nuns
refused, -ayinir that since the garb bill
was a law ihev would o!-v it. Since
then arrangements have been made for
the Siters lo teach in the old church
building at that place. All the Catholic
citizens of the town agreed to send their
children to the Sister and not to the pub
lic schools. As the population of liallit.iit
is almost entirely Cat holic, the handsome
new school building there will Ite prac
tically deserted.
One of the lesi arguments against the
too great u.-e of farm machii.ery is illus
trated on the farm of 1. I!. Crider, near
lleech Creek, Centre comity. This spring
Mr. Crider put out a lield of l-'.'i acres of
corn and just to e pel i iii. nl he planted the
entire lield by hand. The lield was lirst
marked out in checkers ahout three reet
square, anil I lien planted. The utmost
care w as ex'-rcised and but bmr grains of
corn were put in one hill. The phosphate,
of which there was ahout a lou to every
ten acres, was aNo put in by hand. Ami
now the result far exceeds the ex pecta lions
of the most sanguine. The corn in tields
alongside of M r. Crider's lield is only of
the nominal grow th, while the corn in Mr.
Crider's lield is all from twelve to seven
teen feet iii lie 1 1: lit and many of the stalks
bear two and some even three ears.
Passenger railway cars ..s. and '.t
collided in the Kleventh ward. Johnstown,
during a dense Tog at about 7 o'clock on
Wednesday iimiiiiiiit. Motormen Itlakvlv
and McFeaiers had charge of the cars,
and instead of the latter remaining on the
-i.ling until the other passed, as he would
have done but for the fog. he went on, and
the cars met each oilier be lore the inolor

proach. As the cars came together, in the
instant of opportunity, both moiormen
jumped and escaped injury. Miss Mary

Klakely's car, received severe bruises and

by a piece of gla-s from a broken window

ed. Windows were broken in both cars
and the front ends damaged considerably.
The Fair.
The Fbeiisburg fair opened up on Tues-
lay and is fell attended for the opening
davs. The rain on Tuesday, w hile it put
a dainpeiter on the crowd and prevented
many people from going, settled the dust
and made the roads much more pleasant
in drive, and the track much better than
it would otherwise have Iteeit.

the opening Jay. The balloon ascension
was the great attraction of the day and
the ascent made bv Professor Jewell was
one of the most successful and interesting

An extensive tire occurred iu the town
o Irvona, Clearfield county, near thuCam-
t.ria e.iuntv line, on Monday night. The
principal industry there was a large tan
.urv and it was destroyed. Word was
sent to Altoona, asking for aid, aud a com
i,anv WHS disoatched to the place, which
soon had the Haines under control. There
was $luu,U worth of bark close al hand,
and, if wind had arisen, it would have
been greatly endangered.
It is supposed that over two hundred
men will be thrown out of employment,
aud the loss will aggregate altoitt H,ii,
fully insured.
Isidore Kingston, au employe of the tan
nery, was injured seriously. He had
tried to put out the tire in lis iucipiency,
when a dust explosion occurred, by which
Lis face and hands were burned.

Pursuant to the call of Chairman L. D.
Woodruff, the delegates elected to the
Cambria countv convention assembled at
the court house in this place on Monday
last at one o'clock. After being called to
order and the roll called, Messrs. C. L.
Ooodwin. of Duiilo, and T. A. Sharhaugh,
of Carrolltow 11. were elected as tellers, and
L. I. Woodruff was elected as presiding
officer. The convention at once
got down to business and very little time
was lost.
Before ihe norr.inatious w ere made Chair
man Woodruff appointed John A. Blair,
E. Mclilade, B. O'Hagan, A. Eckenrode
and R. E. Cresswell as a committee to re
pott on resolutions.
The following nominations were made
by acclamation without optosilion :

A Narrow Karitpe.
Mr. James Snyder, a native of Carroll
township, this county , who has lieen a res
ident of Altoona for a numU-r of years, and
up until a couple of yeais ago was en
gaged with his hrother, lieorjfe Snyder, iu
conducting the Arlington Hotel, made a
narrow escape from death on Saturday af
ternoon. Mr. Snyder has the contract for
the mason work on the new impounding
reservoir at K manning I'oint and has been
giving it his personal supervision ever
since the work was commenced. On Sat
urday he was on one of ihe Pennsylvania
Halroad Company's shifters at Kittanning
Point, and in dismounting from it he
stepping directly in front of an eastbound
liecf train. Fortunalely it was running
slow at the time, otherwise Mr. Snyder
would most probably have boen killed.
The engine struck him and he was hurl
ed from ihe track. He was uot seriously
injured, although he was Dadly shaken up.
