Work has commenced at joints all along the route. Opposite tllen Campliell there is about a mile aud a half of grading done. and the masons commenced on their work last week. Ttii Utnl on Wttla. There is now being built at the lialdwin locomotive works, in Philadelphia, au or dinary locomotive with driving wheels of five feet diameter, w hich. It is said, w ill as soon, as completed (in about four weeks) draw a train of cars from New York to Philadelphia in an hour. The locomotive is not to lie set on the rails as engines gen erally are. When it is completed it is ti be placed on what are known as the Hol- tnan friction-geared trucks, which will raise it : iuches alove the surface of the rails. It will be just like any other loco motive except that each of its driving wheels will rest upon and lietween two smaller wheels, which iu turn will rest upon and between three other wlni-ls that tiually rest on the rails. The instant the drivers of the locomotive begin to turn they necessarily through fric'ioti give au opposite rotary motion to the small w heels upou w hich they bear, and these small w heels just as necessarily give a forward rotary motion to the third set of w heels upon w hich they are bear ing. The natural and inevitable result is that one revolution of the locomotive's driving wheels, by this multiplicity of wheels in pyramid form, carries the loco motive forward just twice as far as a siu gle revolution of the driving w heels on the track. Iu other words, the speed of the engine, w hatever that speed might be on the rails themselves, is exactly doubled by the use of this newly invented truck. In addition to the increase in speed attainable, this new invention will, it is claimed, save millions of dollars through the diminished wear and tear upon the rails, for the weight of locomotives will then ls further distributed along the tl ark, and at no oint of any rail w ill their U-a pressure more than one-third as great as is now e rled by the driving wheels. khrrlfl'n Kalea.
