The new ballot law is an Imjierfect
measure, but it Is lictter than the old one.
The practical politicians didn't like It and
at first meant to defeat 't in the senate.
I'.nt public .sentiment was too strong for
them and they were obliged to content
themselves with making it as intricate as
pns.-ihlo and ordained that it should be
tried for the first time at the coming na
tional election. Recently they have been
talking about its cost, the huge size of the
ballots, the probability of there being no
election, their whole purpose being to
prejudice the people against the law and
render its repeal easy. In this way they
have met witli a measure of success. We
want to say, howevei, that every citizen
whohaslM-en led to doubt the utility of
the lasv has been decitived. Wfoorin Trfo

There was an epidemic of burglars on
Monday evening In the city and at Cone

they raided Kelly's Hotel, the residence of
Mrs. Hush McOovem, Frank Munima's
barber shop, and Mrs. McfJough's resi

they made off. In all of these raids they
gained but little.
It appears they then made off towards
the city and entered Joe Dixon's store on
Iron street, where they tried the money
till, but got nothing. They, however,
seized some cigars, some tobies and to
bacco, as well as a lot of tobacco and
candy. F. A. Joy's store, on Bedford

obtained of any value,

In Allegheny, Indiana and many of the
other counties of Pennsylvania the people
have gotten into the habit of electing pub
lic officers who best serve the public with
out regard to their own private luterests.
Mou ntuinter'
The MoimtiirHccr is unfortunate in pick
ing out two Republican counties and nam
ing them as counties that "have gotten Into
the habit of electing pub Ic officers w hi(best
serve the public without regard to their
ow n piivate Interests." Allegheny county
is noted for the corrupt jobbery of its offi
cial and there Is scarcely a vear goes by
that some of them ure not in trouble, but
they always manage to come out white
washed. It is a well-known fact that the
people of Indiana county in building
their court house paid for about two court
houses ou account of official stealing aud
had to send someof their officials to prison.
Better take another guess.

A New York dispatch in Tuesday's

The dropping of the leaves is not always
caused by the ending of summer, or the ad
vent of the fall season, hut indeed by
many causes. So with the health and life
of the Human lieing. One by one they are
carried to an early grave. You take a cold
and say, "Oh, well it is nothing but a cold."
and so it is, but if not checked iu tune and
neglected, it leads to consumption and
other diseases. Prevent it. stop it, by
using a purerye whiskey. Ministers phy
sicians and hospital superintendents agree
in recommending as a perfect stimulant,
