M order 1b Snmersf I t'ouDlj, In the Laurel II ill region in Somerset county, on Wednesday evening of last week a murder was committed, which for tirutal atrocity stands without a paralel in that county. The victim was Jonathan Hochstetler an old resident of that mountain region. who was reputed to be a Government spy and who was a witness three weeks ago at Seranton, at the trial of three members of a band of moonshiners from Somerset and Fayette counties. On Wednesday afternoon James Beale ! from Westmoreland county, started from ) the village of Trent to walk to the home of his sister in th. mountains. When in the wildest part of the forest he observed an old man coming down a path. While he was watching him two other meu with rifles stepped out from the bushes and halted the old man, when Immediately the reports of both rifles rang out and the old man fell. The two nun with rifles ran up to the old man and commenced clubbing him sticking him again and again with the butts of their guns. Young Beale turned and fled but had to run a mile before ho reached a house where he told his story and then ran on to the village of Trent. There a searching party was organized and proceeded to the scene where they found blood spattered atnut and all the evidences of a struggle as told hy young Beale, but as it was then ten o'clock at night the search had to beabar.doned. The next day the body of John Hochstetler was found hidden near the spot w here he was mur dered. It is believed that a man named William Miller and another named Pritts are the guilty parties to the crime but they have not as yet ben taken. Public Nebvol r.tattrtalnment.
