This afternoon at 1:53 o'clock Sheriff Stlneman pulled the the trigger that let loose the platform upon which Harry Marsh w as standing, and In the twinkling of an eye Marsh dropped Into eternity. HARIty MARSH. The crime for which Harry Marsh paid the penalty with his life w as a brutal one. On the morning the 6th of July last, Har ry Marsh and Clara J;nes started from the house of Mrs. tJuthrige, a sister of Clara's, who lived in Gallitzin. for the purpose of visiting thelatter's mother at Amsbry with the Intention of asking her const-1 to their marriage. Clara Jones was a domestic living at (luunlug's hotel, in Gallitzin, and on the evening of the 5th of July Marsh had called on her and the couple started out together. They did not return until afer the hotel closed and iu consequence. Clara was locked out ou iier return. The couple then proceeded to the house of the girl's sister, Mrs. John Guthrldge, where they spent the night together. After leav ing (iuthridge's house they had gone about a quarter of a mile w hen Marsh, according to his owu statement, knocked the girl down with a coupling pin and then rut her throat. John Nagle of Gallitzin, accompanied by a boy came along shortly after the b'oody devd had been committed and ou their ap proach Marsh came to meet them aud In formed them that he hud committed a mur der, that he w anted-to give himself Hp and pointed to the girl lying by the roadside with her throat cut. covered with blood. He insisted on Nagle not stopping, but going at once w ith him to a policeman. Ou the w ay to Gallitzin Marsh told Xagle, that jealousy was the cause of the crime and that he intended dragging the body luto the woods and hiding it. On their ar rival at Gallitzin, they went at once to policeman Spigelhalter's where Marsh gave himself up aud handed the policeman a bloody razor saying "here's what I done it with, I knocked her down with a coup ling pin and then cut her throat. Alter delivering Marsh over to the po liceman, Xugle accompanied by a number of people, returned and found the girl still living, her clothing covered with blood, her windpipe severed and protruding from a gaping wound in her throut. She was taken to tho home of her sister, w here she received every attention that medical skill could afford, but died ou the following Tuesday, about noon. CLARA JOXES. Marsh was at once brought to jail as it w as deemed best by the authorities to re move him as quickly as possible as It was feared when the excltexl people found out the atrocity of the crime there would be a strong probability of his being lynched. THE TRIAL. The trial of Marsh came up on Thurs day September 11th. and was presided over by the late Judge Johnston. Hon. Ed T. McNeells was employed for the prisoner and la!ored earnestly in his de fense. District Attorner O'Connor repre sented the interests of the Commonwealth, The following gentlemen were empan eled on the Jury; William Cole, Levi G. Howard. William Kountz, David Kratzer, V. G. Myers, John 11. Myers, John Stormer, Joseph Anderson, Law reure Murphy, Thomas Davis, Jonathan Keese and K. li. Van Ornier, the last five named being talesmen. After the testimony in the case was all In aud Judge Johnston had concluded his charge the Jury retired to their room and after an absense of fifty minutes returned and rendered a verdict of guilty of mur der in the first decree. THE KCAFFOI.D. The scaffold Is the same one used at the execution of Charles Carter on the Itth of April last. Rev, George Hill, of the Congre gational church in this place, w ho has been Indefatigable In his ministrations to the spiritual comfort of the doomed man and whose work in his behalf has been thankfully and humbly acknowledged In the afternoon Marsh requested Sheriff stineman to be permitted to see the scaf fold and In company w Ith his two broth ers who arrived her on Monday and the Sheriff, he walked out in the Jail yard and took a look at the instrument of death. He walked up the steps to the Iilat form remarking that "you are going to a good j deal of trouble for me" and returned with lretnrn.wi.-m.. out a tremor, HIS LAST NIG FIT. During ti e evening several friends, the members of Sheriff Stineman's family, and a fow reporters visited him. Marsh Joined in singing several hymns among which were "Just as I am," "Home Over There," etc.. By request he sang "My Wandering Boy which is his favorite nong. On be ing Informed that his coffin was In the building and that he could see It If he wished, he in company with the warden and a press reporter went to see It, Tip remarked to tho warden that ho "could rest very comfortably in it." He w as in a very cheerful mood all evening und bears up with remarkable courage. After read the .'1st Psalm and kneeling at his Ix-dside In prayer, he retired at 11:20 p. M. and was soon w rapt iu a tteareful sleep from which he aoke at :) on Thursday morning. Marsh ate a light breakfast consisting of bread, fried ejrgs and a cup 'f coffee. After that lie spent the morning iu com pany with Rev. Hill, and sheriff Stineman, and in bidding his friends and relatives good bye. Among the numlier were his one brother, and two uncles. The other brother left on Wednesday for IVale, to make arrangements for the funeral. At 11 :30 dinner was served to Marsh in his cell In company with Rev. Hill and Sheriff Stineman. Marsh had requested to have oysters and oranges fordlnner and his request was grant-d. He ate his last meal with apparent relish and then with his spiritual adviser resumed his preparations for death. THE EXKC ITION. Dr. T. S. Troxell. Park Stall!. D. G. Myers. John Eandis. Xoah Dishong and Casper Smith. At 1:.V) p. m. Marsh accompanied by Rev. Hill. Sheriff Stineman, Deputy sher iff Davis. Warden Young and the Jury, marched out from the corridor in solemn procession and passing out through the jail yard marched to the scaffold. About 700 spectators were present and Marsh faced the upturned faces of the people and marched up the steps to the platform ac companied by Sheriff Stineman. Deputy Sheriff Davis Warden Young, and Rev. Hill without a tremor. On being asked, by the Sheriff if he had anything to say, he rose from the chair on which lie sat. and leaning on the scaffold and said: "I wish to say that I am sorry for w hat I have done and am willing to pay the jen alty. I have the lest brothers and rela tives. Sheriff Stineman and Warden Young have lieen very kind tome and I wisii you all good bye. Stepping toward the trap-door hcaid: "Don't you fellows put out no lying reorts about me" The straps were then buckled around his arms, his hands handcuffed ttchiud his hack and the black cap drawn over his head. At I:S8 the tdieriff pulled the lever. Marsh dropped and hung limp for about a minute when a few nervous twiuhings were observed and all was over. His neck was broken by the fall. After the lxdy had been taken down it was placed in a neat casket purchased ly the relatives of Marsh from Robert Evans, of this place, and taken to the station In time for the 3:35 p.m. train and, aeconi panied by his brother, two uncles and sev eral friends was taken to Peale, Clearfield county, where arrangements have been made for the funeral which will take place from tho residence of his brother Earnest on Saturday. Luther, of Carroll township, and a brother of Michael aud Edw ard Luther, of this place, was dronnitl in theConcmaugh river betw een Cooersdalcaud Morrellville on Friday last, about eleven o'clock in the forenoon. Young Luther, w ho was a blacksmith by trade, was 'working for Messrs. J. A. A H. A. Shoemaker, w ho have the contract for building the abutments for the new bridge in the course of erection Iietween the two places. On the morning of tho fatal acci dent he and Albert Farabaugh had crossed the river in a skiff for the purpose of tight ening some guy-ropes. They had crossed the rlx-er and w ere returning, w orklng their way over by pulling on the rope instead of using oars, aud when about mid-stream they dipcd the boat, which began tilling with water, and both men sprang out. Farabaugh got hold of the boat and suc ceeded In working his way out, but Luth er, w ho could not swim, sank at once and was seen no more. All day ou Friday and Saturday searching parties were engaged In looking for the body but w ere unsucc3ss ful, and up to the preseut time it has not been found. The young man, who was well known in Ebeiisburg where he had worked for some time previous to his going to Johnstow n, w as about Vi years of age, and w as highly respited and esteemed by all who knew him. foarl Proceed lar.
