An article in an Allahabad (India) newspaper ives some interesting par ticulars concerning tbe tunnel that has jus been completed through tbe Chojak on the railroad from Quetta toCndhar. Tee Chojak Pss is 7,500 feet above the sea and about 2 000 feet above the level of the surroandicg countrv. Tbe tun nel pterees tbe range at right angles and its course is, therefore, due ea&t and weet, and it enters tbe hill at about 1 000 feet below the crest of the p?s. The lenrth of the tunnel is 12 XK) feet, or two and a half miles approxi mately, and It wi!i carry a double line of rails. For tbe first half tbe floor ascends about 1 foot In a thousand and for tbe second half of the juarney it de scends at an mclice of 1 to 40. There are two min shaf s, one 31S fpet and the other 20 feet dep, which were sutk in order to facilitate tb con struction of the tunnel. The chief ob stacle to progress arose from tbe flood icg of tbe tunnel at more than one point. A large spring was cut and the water flooded the shaft on the Candbar side to the deptn of ISO feet. It took ten weeks to pump out the water, and in the western headings as mucn as 50 gal lons a minute were constantly running out of the west month. In order to overcome this difficulty a side cutting had to made. Tbe magnitude of tbe work is Is tea tified to by tbe banks of shale and rock at tbe months of the tnnnel and at the heads, which are said to be quite alter ing the landscape in places. One cur ious discovery made during tbe progress of the work, as tbe result of an Investi gation in tbe cause of certain myster ious explosions, was that it was proved that ''combustion had arisen inside a case of blasting gelatine." Forecasting Thnnder Morms. When the daily weather charts are drawn, if we find that there is an unev enness in tbe isobaric lines that is, if these are wavy, or bulfle out Irregularly we know that thnnder storms are likelf to burst ont somewhere or other over the country, but that is all we can say. At each station the barometer is unsteady tbe mercury moving up and down in the tube during the actual continnance of the etorm; bat this os cillation of the mercurial column has nothing to do with tbe irregularity In tbe isohrric lines above mentioned. Forecasting these storms is, therefore. an uncertain and thankless task, for local succpps Is rarely attained. Among the earliest symp'ons of the approach of a thnnder storm Is the ap pearance on the western horfnon of a line of cumu'us ("wool pack") clouds, exhibiting a Ff cullar tnrreted strnctare. I say on the western hor'zon, for most of our changes of weather come fre-m that q-jartpr, and it has been proved thunder storms, like wind storm. ad vance over the country, generally, from some westerly point. This bank of clouds moves on, and over It arpear first streamers and then sheets of upper lighter cloud cirrus, or "mare's tali" which spread over the sky with ex treme rapidity. The bavy cloud mass comes up und-r this Gim, and it is a general observation that no electrical exploeion or downfalbof rain ever takes pt8ce from a cloud unless streamers of cirrus, emanating from its upper sur face, are visible when fhe cloud is looked sideways from a distance. Thinning of the ,- . . j uii a:so occBsmnaiiy occurs in conse . quence of constitutional ill health. rrobably no better "hair restorer" hat been found than cantharides. A simple, and perhaps as good as any other application, is made with one ounce of the tincture of cantharides, four ounces of bay rum and ten ounces of water. This should be well rubbed into thu scalp every day. Quinine has some repute as a hair ton ic. Ma me usual proportions are two drachms to a pint of water. Common water may be used. The mixture may be made np by a druggiet, who will need to add a little diluted Bulphurlc acid and a few dropa of eome perfume oil will render it more agreeable. It would be well, also, to add to each pint of the mixture two or three ounces of glycerine. Apply this tonic once or twice a day. A'rapid gain muit never be expected from the use of any hair restorative. Great tracks of Australia have never been troddeB by tbe foot of a white man, and nearly all of South America inside of the coast lines, is known only ty Hearsay and tradition. Coming op to onr northern half of the continent we encounter more unknown lands. Central America and Mexico offer fer tile fields for exploration, and Lower California has never been thoroughly explored. In the far North is Greenland, Biffln Land, the great Hudson Bay region, all of British America north of latitude de grees, and onr great territory of Alask. Here Is a wonderful field for adventur ous explorers, and it is impossible to predict what Is in store for them. The natives of northern Alaska also report hat further north is another land, noi down on the maps, an Inhabited land with a comparitively mild climate. 1 j spil and Liver romplaiat. Xew round land is about 300 miles across at the deadest, part and a little over 400 miles loDg. Its people are pe culiar, as all iDsala folk are, hut rugged, hardy, bontst and hospital to a decree. Tbe whole interior Is an unknown ter ritory. Only one white man has ever made tie j urtey frim tj.st to wtsl a Mr. Co.ack, who ncc crpl'slied the feat ii. 1S29. Coiisiquect y there is no map of Newfoundland extant which is in any degree reliable. Ir is a very cur ious fact ibat a valuable tract of Jat-d with coal, iron, lead tiid silver in its bowels, and ierftcl!y accessible tn the explorer, shouid re train so Ions cd- kDOWD. The inhabitants live on the water and have co interest wha'ever in farming. What they eat and wear is all imported. Hardtack, rea and G&b cotsti'ute their diet frrm one year to another, and on tbe poor man's table meat is seldom seen. Tbey are skilled sailors, but tbey would stumble over a plow and break their necks. The coast is their home home, all tbey know anything about, except tbe wild waste of waters from which tbey gel their living and in which so miny find their graves. Ten miles from tbe rocks on which tbe cabins are built you enter upon a wilderness well stocked with game, watered by rivers In which trout are plenty, but tbe people leave It undisturbed by axe or agricul ture. The quaint city of Sr. Johns reminds of the mellow and mystical med'ieyal days. It has thrift, but it is old-fashioned. At xiight tbe watchman still patrols tbe streets droning out tke boors in stentorian voloe and ending with the refrain "All's well." Some day enterprise will rub its eyes open, and then Newfoundland will offer a new field for capital and speculation. Tbe Coffee of Bollria. The agricultural industries or Boliv ia comprise but three articles of conse quence, viz : coffee, chlucona bark and cocoa. The best coffee comes from the valley of the Yungas. Through a very small white bean, it posesses a pecular ly dellcbte flavor, and cammacds a higher price in the market than any other. The narrow valley, however, produces 12,000 arrobas a year (23 pounds to the arroba), or about one fourth of Bolivia's supply. The pro vince of Mapiri produces three times as much, but its coffee brings less money, being of inferior quality. Tbe average value of Yungas' yearly crop is 100,000 psos aurana, or 80,000 bolivianas, tbe dollars or the country. A boMvlaDa, by tbe way, is woith twenty five cents less than the "sol" (dollar) of Piru ; and the Bolivian peso Is worth 25 cents less than the bo!Ivans, while every American dollar in gr Id or paper com nands fl.SO in Bolivian cur rency. To transport the Yungas coffee over the mountains to La Paz costs the producer about two bolivianas and forty cents per quintal. The average price of coffee at La Paz is 24 bolivianas per hundred weight, while from the coast ot Europe, ail tbe way around by sailing vessels, it is only one boliviana. Luckily there Is no ex port duty on coffew, though at present barely enough is grown for hom con sumption. Doubtless the ou'put will soon be greatly increased, as many of the largest chincona planters are now planting coffee instead of the quina tree, since the latter bas become literally a "drng on tbe market." Take Warning An editor died and slowly wended his way down to where he supposed a warm reception awaited him. The devil met him and said : "For many years thou bast borne Llama of bad spelling that tbe printer has gotten oil In the paper ; the paper hast gona out at a dollar a year alas, the one dollar bas failed to come in. The printer was bedeviled for wages evary Saturday night, and thou hast not a darned farth ing to thy name. Men have been taking tbe paper without paying for it, and have cursed thee for not getting up a better paper. Thou bast been called deadhead by the conductors when thou ha&t shown thy annual to their gaze. All these thou hast borne In silence. Thou csns't not come here." Ard he fired him. And as he did so tbe davil murmured to him self : 'Heaven is bis home, and be side, if I bad left him In here he would have been dunning his delinquent sub, scribers and thereby raise discord in my kingdom." Vacation Kplsode. "Maud, I should like to know the meaning of this reception." "Mr. Hazard, you shall !" answered the prend country girl, freezingly. "I have found you out, sir. That is all I" "What do you mean, dearest ?" "Don't come near me, sir I Stay on the other side of that fable. I have found out that you have been amusing yourself at my expense." "For Heaven's sake. Maud, explain." - "I know I am freckled -faced, sir V she said, with flashing eye, "but I dia not thiDk you capable of joking about it with your friends." . "I haven't done anything of the kind, Maud I" protesUd the young man. "You have, sir I After you had had proposed to me last night, and I said y yees, and you had gone. I over heard you telling Mr. Bellchamber out there on the front porch what glorious fun it was to go into the mountains in August and catch speckled beauties." Saratoga Potatces. Saratoga potatoes are twice fried, by tbe following directions : Slice verv thinly some washed and peeled potatoes. dry them well In a clean cloth, put them In a frying baket, and ptorjge this Into sufficient boiling fat to cover them completely.. Cook them till tender, then lift out the basket, allow the fat to boil up, return the potatoes to the pan. and let them get quite crisp, drain from the fat, sprinkle with salt and a little chopi ed parsley and dish up. If packed in a tin air-tight box, these potatoes ktep good for some time, and are equally good hot or cold. R. L. JOIfSSTOS. M.J.UVCK. A. IV.BVCK TABI.ISIIKI1 1-TJ.
