You vyou not ihink ol havu g such out house, as the ie6idence s of the tuajoiity of this vast population wou'd rnnke, and in a large part of India, and t?ppoiai;y in ibe IvKt pirt of thi (I ir.pe? ci-untry. the ticliirffs average from two to time acres apiece. At four io ihe family this j reprihenis a half acre per peison or 1200 ptrsous to the square rui'e. Wiieu it ia remembered 'hat these reepU- live by agriculture it will tie seen that this condilion is far worse than that cf China or any part of Europe. And still the people are bright. They are brainy, too, and you will And few sharper business men, better cut faces, and more polite people tban these peo ple of India. Their faces in this part of India have much the Bauae charnctTis. tics s those of tbe Anglo-Saxon. Tbose of the btRhst. castes are more like ihos of the Gret-ks, and I see faces every day which, if the skin were white, any American might be proud to own. They belong to the same race germ that we do, and under tbe same training and Christian influences they would be strong competitors wilb us. But what van a man do on six cent3 a day. or can a man -learn when he has to struggle to exist ? The population of India is still increasing. Engnd eats the lion '8 share of the products of the country, aod though the peop'e perhaps are better off under her Government tban they have been in the past, it is same old story of the wealth going to the rulers and the people working their flVsb off their bones to support the Gov ernor General of India, who. by the way, is the rich Marquis of Lansdowne, gets 5100.000 a year. (uite a contrast with the masses at six cents a day 1 Isn't it ? Hot Weather Maxims. Loose, comfortable clothing is no longer rfgaided a disgrace either to man or woman. Time was, to be sure, a good w hile ago, when men wore com plete linen suits in summer and looked cool in them, and probably were cool. Iiut immaculate white linen coat, waist coat and trousers have to be regarded as an eccentricity, and we passed through a petiod when a man's summer attire was hardly to be distinguished from his winter garb ; but now the epoch of light flannel, serge and chey rt, and of the inoffensive mohair and alpaca has come in. Devices for mitigating the effects of the hot weather are eDdless, 8nd most of them useless. Here are three tried and truthworthy maxims for hot weath er conduct, and outside of them there is no trick or device by means of which the dog star can be circumvented. These maxims are : Wear as light and loose clothing as you dare. Take plenty of exercise, but in a calm way. Drink no alcoholic or tffervesent bev erages. In exercising the great point is not to be afraid of the heat, but not, at the same time, to choose violent diversions. As to beverages, of course, pereonal experiences always vary, and one man's refreshment is another mau's bane ; but as a general principle it is safe to shnn about nine-tenths of all tte sum mer drinks. Soda-water in any form is a delusion aod a snare. Making Castor Oil. Tbe process of manufacturing the oil is very simple. The beans are ground np one and put in horsehair bags. In this shape they are crushed under a powerfnl press, giving oat In oil about ode-third of their weight. The dry pulp, called "pumice," is sold for fer tilizing. Tbe oil is Altered and finally bleachedj if for medical e, by expos ure to tbe pun's rays under glass. Tbe amount of castor oil employed for medi cine, however, is trifling compared to tbe quanty consumed in mechanical crafts. For lubricating leather it is nnequaled, while Its properties as an "alizarine assistant" are incomparable. Alazarine ia an element found, in coal tar, from which all the brilliant '"mad der colon are obtained by chemical means. These coal tar tints are used for printing textile fabrics, with an ad mixture of castor oil to make their working easier. In India castor oil is used for burning in lamps. The art of making it from the beans is of recent discovery. The ancients were accustomed to administer the seeds whole for medicine. Ai Brst beat was emploped in the crushing of the beans, but this injured the quality of the oil, while daring the process a volatile principle escaped, so irritating that the workmen were compelled to wear protecting masks. Japanese Taper. The Japanese beat the world for hand-made paper. Tbe Japanese parer is especially good for etching, and is greatly in vogue among artists. It is exceedingly durable and highly finished, and prints from it are very much finer than any other quality of paper. The band-made parchment papej ia made from the inner bark of tbe sycamore tree and is of very tough fibre and is beautifully finished. The Japanese gov ernment has official documents in its possession printed upon this parchment, which 13 as good as new to-day, after l.-VX) years' wear and tear. The Japs themselves use this paper for houses, coats, umbrellas, screens and every im aginable purpose. The manufacture of hand-made paper is now being princi pally conducted by the Japanese gov eminent as a national enterprise. So:e of the Cnest residences in the United States and many public build ings have been lately decorated with Japanese wall ptper. Th's is bpcoroing one or their leadircr lines for export. The psprs are most gorgeous in hue and design, and are very strong and durable.
