The patlient Scotchman baa bis re venge sometimes. The natural mean ness of he man nature has carried all over the world that ill nature ! saying of Sydney Smith's that it needed a sur gical operation to get a joke through a Scotchman's head. And yet the wit-tie-t writer to-day la the English lan guage is W. S. Gilbert, a Scotchman. And now they are going to erect a statue to Robert Burns. I am willing to admit that if you hive lived in Srct'aal i: hard to urders'ard a Scy.chman wiitir.g poetry. It may be accounted for, peihaps, by the fact that it 13 always raining there and keeping ludojra drives a maa to doing anything e.en writlag poetry. But it is worth thinking of Lbat this plowmaa, whose eoal was so often sad. who found life not woith living, should be to-day the roet of all classes of bociety, appieeiattd by a'l. felt by al?. Yes, the Scotchman may be dour, be may be canny, be may be paw ky, ht may be a hundred other adjec tives that do not meau much ; but when he quotes Bobby Burns to you, you 3alate the flig of his country. Men Lave fought and d:ed and suffered and slaved for the good of their country and tbey have been forgotten, when a few lines or poetry carry a simple plowman from generation to generation, from land to land, from one class cf society to anoth er. Surely we cannot deny the exist ence of the human heart when the peo ple to-day want to erect a sta4iie to Burns. Jllglit Jlave Been Presidents' Hires. In a yillctga some twelve miles distant from Cleveland, OMo, there lived, some 30 years ago, two very attractive girls. To one cf these Mr. II ayes became a suitor, but the parents of the yoong lady vigorously opposed the courtship on the ground that young bayes was poor, and gave evidence of hardly suf ficient ability to warrant risking their daughter's future. The match was broken oC and the lady Is to-day mar ried uid well known in Cleveland soci ety. The other young lady bad received mary attentions from young Garfield. and quite dirpnsed to reciprocate them. Her parents, however, objected ti their intimacy, giving as o reason for their eppoeition, tb poverty of Garfield and the anything bnt bright prewpecta of his future. Tne chief coincidence of these courtships consists in the fact that Bedford, where both thesn young ladies lived, contained at the time less than 500 inhabitants, and both refused two future Presidents of the United States because of their poverty.
