The !Ub and 10th of each month are desig. nated as pay days In Altoona from tbe fact that tbe company employee are paid on thoee days, tbe lower shopmen receiving their ducata on the !'th and tbe upper shop men on tbe 10th. Tuesday, therefore, was pay day at tbe car shops, but the men didn't get their money because the money was un der lock and key. Tbe First National bank is the depository In this city and tbe money was placml la the safe in that institution on Monday and the lock was turned on In tbe same evening by Cashier Jobn Lloyd. Tbe money amounted to 320,000 and was in currency. Wtwn tne effort was made to open the sare Tuesday morning It was found that tbe door would not answer to the umtuons. Continued trials were equally unavailing and Cnally a force of company men under W. n. Houseman was called in. It Is supposed, that the safe be ing full of bills, some of tbem worked down between one of tbe holts and the time lock, thus preventing the bolts from being thrown open sufficiently far to allow the door to swing out.
