Caukolltown. Aug. 8, 1S3S. EiiTOa Freeman : The new historical, geographical and geological work on Cam bria county is prosressinu finely. The fore man, Mr. Caldwell, informs us that large and rxtended coal fields are to be found iu great portions of the county. This county is so situated ana being In al most the centre of the State, taking m part of the Allegheny mountains and on top of the great water sheds that divide the Atlan tic from those of the gair. We dnd the Susquehanna river enters the county at Cnerrytree and runs through Sus quehanna, Barr and Into Carroll townships and in the 2iortb and Souta branches of Biackick creek the sourcss of the waters or Gulf. Tha value of the coal beds maka them an object of Interest to every citizen and we naturally inquire : How cam these here ? and we might be justified In saying that no satisfactory answer has yet been given. It we should hastily conclude that they were always here, just as we see them, a little ob servation would eerve to convince us of our mistake. A very few years will suffice to show ns Islands In the river entirely washed away, new ones forming, aeres of valuable bottom land carried away and re-deposited elsewhere ; land elides on the mountain side, gulli-s washed in the hills and low lands coveted with mud and sand. Again, if we examine the slate that car ries to the Altanilc. ocean we will find it overlies some of our principal coal seams. In specimens taken from mines hundreds of feet under gronnd, most beautiful ia.Drir.ts of ferns, weeds, leaves and flowers can be found iu all the coal deposits In this county- If we carefully examine the coal itself even with the naked eye, we can discover remains of vegetation, leaf scars, as Dlain as any to be seen In our forests to-day, and this wa find from the coal taken from the deep est mines. When this new work s publish ed and a full geological history given our people will then know how much value they have lying dormant beneatn them. MARRIAUE LlrESsES 1SSCED.
