On Thursday of last week the Carroll town band drove into town in their new wagon and took dinner at the Mountain House. While here the band played sever al fine selections of music, and as they are a Jolly, good set of fellows, we are always glad to meet them. The new wagon takes the cake however, and was admired by all. It was bur.t by Mr. J. II. Condon, of Altoo na. and is well and substantially built, commodious, finely finished, and lettered on the out eldo "Carrolltown Band" Mr. Cot don has furnished a large cumber of vehi cles to our citizens in the north of the coun ty, ami we have no doubt the band-wagon will be like all the rest of his work, bard to beat. The experience of a Cambria county man In Wyoming Territory is narrate oy the Pi'tshurg Tinvt of last Monday morn ing as follows : George. W. They found when they arrived at St. Louis that they were stranded. Being a Grand Army man Mr. Rtcketts concluded to wait till the Pennsylvania dlepatton should ar rive. He pawned his wife's watch for f 10 and his watch for f.w. but this sum was only sufficient to see them a short distance. Goveuor Beaver. J. C. Stevenson, of New Castle, and other (. A. On Saturday last Mr. James McGough, an old citizen of Summerhlll township, while returning to his home from Wilmore was In stantly killed by a freight train on the rail road. Mr. McGough, who was about seven ty years of age, left Wilmore between five and six o'clock to wala home, a distance of about two miles. When at the station at Wilmore, he started down the railroad trnck which Is somewhat nearer than fol owing the township road, anil had got down to where he would turn off to take a path that leads to his boue. He started acrms the track and In some unaccountable manner failed to notice a train that was coming up, stepped directly In front of It and was. of course struck and instantly killed, the body being thrown about twenty feet to the side and when the train was stopped life was extinct. Mr. McGough was a widower, tis wife having died about two years ago. He leaves a family of six children all grown np, four sons John, Thomas, Paredius and William i and two daughters both married, the one I the wife of Charles Fresh and the other j man led to Albert Carpenter. Mr. Mc- Gough was born in Summerhlll township , and was a brother of Messrs. John, Patrick, I William and Daniel McGough and Mrs. Boyle and Misj Elizabeth McGough who ad reside in that neighborcood. He was ' a lueruDwr of the Catholic church and bis remains were Interred in SL Bartholomew's cemetery at Wilmore on Monday last. Arrfntfd for Hnrtlarj. On last Monday, John S. Hipps. Jr., was arrested at Blacklick, Indiana connty. for larceny and burglary, as it Is alleged that he entered Borabaugh's store, in Lumber City, Clearfield county, on Friday night, September lost. The young man Is a sou of John S. Illppa, of the firm of Illpps A Lloyd, the well-known lumber firm who have been operating la the north of this county for a number of years. He bad been working at Black lit. k as a laborer in the brick yard for some time. There are a great many stories afloat in itus mailer, out um louowmg appears to oe the main part of them. John t. Hipps was : married to a miss Hughes, daughter of Na j thanial Hughes, of Cherrytree, Indiana j county, put who has been dead for twenty I years, leaving a husband and two sons. ! The sons l.av become of age within the j past decade, and it is alleged by John, the Juuior. that lie and bis brother were the heirs to f IH.ooo, w hich they received, through I their mother's estate ; that when this sum I was placed in their possession they invested j it. or a portion of it, lu a mill property at I Lumber city, but, not being successful in their business, they became financially in volved, ar.d they went to their father for as ' sis'sno., wl.ich was given t') them promptly, : but afier investigation it was discovered that Mr. Hipps. Sr., Ir. giving assistance to j his stn. j laced the mid ptoperty in his ; name, and tiial tiie sum the boys got from t Lit. ir Uiutl.cr'j totule waa jwailwwcd iu the mill property, and that no settlement could be bad. The boys were then thrown on their own resources. It appears the present trouble started something in this way : John, the Junior, was away from borne, and without any money, and be signed bis father's name to a check for 23, which was honored by the bank and accepted by bis father when the fact came to bis knowledge; but it seems that John. Jr., owned a valuable mare, which was in bis father's barn, and that be would not allow ber to be Uken way until the forged check was paid. Recently the young man left here to visit bis borne, and before starting said he would bring bis mare with him when be came back ; and sure enough, on the following Saturday night be arrived at Blacklick with the animal. It Is alleged by the prosecution that John, the defendant, lert Lumber City on Friday nigbt. and before taking bis departure enter ed Rorabaogh's store the proprietor of which, by tbe way. is related to the Ulppses. He is also accused of setting fire to bis father's barn, although there was no infor mation made charging him with arson. John. Jr., does not deny being in tbe barn on that night, but says that be took bis mar out about 9 o'clock and left, and that the bara was burnt about 11 o'clock. There are rumors that the young man has said that be wonld get square with tbe old man for bis action in cheating him aod bis brother out of the mill property. The prisoner was bendcuffed and taken to Clearfield county, where tbe Information was made. Hem front 1'rocalltjr. Frugality. Oct. 2. 187. Editor Freeman.
