Mr Griffith G. Owens died at his borne in Johnstown, on Monday night about elev en o'clock, aged about sixty-one years. Mr. John Dougherty, of Mount Union( Huntingdon county, known to some of our older readers as "For warding" John Dough erty, died on Friday last at Pittsburgh, aged eighty-three years. At the time of bis death he was engaged In building a boat intended for the Allegheny river, and which from some new principles and theories of Mr. Dough erty's was intended by its builder to be much faster tban tbe ordinary steamboats of the present day. Mr. Dougherty was the inven tor of the section boats used on the Canal in the days or the Old Portage railroad, and during his long life hal made and lost seve ral fortunes. Within the last six months a large quantity of spurious money, principally ten and fifty-cent pieces, has been put in circu lation In Huntingdon and neighboring coun ties, anJ so carefully were the coins finished that but few others than experts could detect the counterfeit. On Tuesday, in searching tbe house of John Wilson at Huntingdon, one of tbe notorious Walker gang of house, breakers, a crucible, two molds, and all the paraphernalia of counterfeiters were dis covered. Upon being notified the authorities at Washington at once dispatched a detect ive to Clearfield county to apprehend Wilson, who is thought to be biding there. On Monday they were rewarded for their perseyerence, and struck oil at a depth of 800 reet The flow was eibt barrels during the day and Is said to be increasing. Oil men pronounce it a fine grade of lubri cating oil, and are impressed that the oil territory extends through Washington, Fayette and Somerset counties into West Virginia.
