The glass was cast, like iron, in i plates to fit the hull. ! Extensive experiments are to be made by the government of Tasmania m nat uralization of European fishes such as lobsters, crabs, turbot and brill in the waters of that country. Similar trials have been very successful in New Zealand and Australia. The weather service of Great Britain appears to be in an nnsatisfaetory con- 1 ditlon. Statistics obtained by the ITonse ! of Lords show that during a period of j ten years 120 unpredicted storms visited ! Rritihh coast, or an average of one ! storm a month. j It is suggested that the Tatagouians j may have lost as much as two i inches in stature since the adoption of j constant horse-back riding, a littls over : two centuries ago. They were formerly ! reputed giants and their bodies are still ! huge, while their legs are dispropor i tionately short and slender. Some remarkable and very successful experiments have been made at Ports month, England, on the us of creosote as a steam generator in ships of war. The creosote is kept in a tank and kept at a uniform temperature and consist ency by steam coils rnnninrr through it. aDd steam injectors force the vapor into the furnace. Dr. Brown Seqaard, the French phys iologist, has demonstrated that for sev eral weeks after death, or during the persistence of the rigid condition which immediately follows the cessation of life, the muscles of an animal undergo slow alternate contractions and elonga Hons ; and he reaches the startling con elusion that tbe muscles in rigor mortis are not dead, but are stiU endowed with vital powers, being, howevet, in certain chemical condition which Is antecedent j to and preparatory to fiual death. Recent experiments confirm the opin j ion of sanitary authorif is that while i natural soil is an excellent filter for impure air that may pass through it. it I I a pr filter for infected water. Mr. j Raphael Pnmpelly. of the National T lard of IIMlth, finds that sand inter poses absolutely no harrier between wells and infection with germs from cess pools, cemeteries, etc., lying even at meat distances in the lower wet stratum of sand ; and that it ii possible that a dry gravel, or possibly a dry, coarse sand is no obstacle to the en trance into houses above of these organ Isms, which swarm in the ground air around leatiy drains. After a careful study of the subject rrofessor p, D, Penballow concludes that the formation of the eo called an nnal rings of growths in trees is chiefly determined by whatever operates to produce the alternating periods of phys iological rest and activity. In cold cli mates the rings are approximately cor rect, but not always certain, index of age. In wbtbo climates, however, the rings are of no value in this respect, as the growth is more likely to mark a pe riod of rainfall than the yearly hot sea son of summer. An electric s.ifety lamp was exhibited by Mr. J. W. Swan, at a recent meet ing of mechanical engineers !n England The ramp ! portable, being fed by a secondary battery, ard the whole weigh ing about six pounds, and is said to be capable of giving two or three times as much light as the ordinary safety lamp during ten or twelve hours. The Rnp ply of electric energy is readily renewed and the batteries of several hundred lamps may be recharged in a few hours by connecting with a puitable electric main. Mr. Swan hopes to give miners still further security by the addition of a foul air detector to the laap. Perhaps ne more striking illustration of the wonderful reproductive powers of certain insects conld be given than that contained in a new work by Theo dore "Wood, an English entomologist. It is assumed, first, that 1,000 aphides weigh no more than a single grain ; and secondly that only a very stout man can weigh as much as two million grains. Then it is found that if multiplication were entirely unchecked, the tenth brood alone of a single aphis would be equivalent in point of actual matter to more than five millions of very stout men. F. Kuntz. This marvellous deposit, eight miles south of Corriza, covers a thousand acres and consists of fallen trees which have be come burieJ silicified into probably a million tons of agate and jasper. Some of the trunks ar 150 feet long and ten feet in diameter, and others are broken into every conceivable shape. Silicified wood is found in many parts of the world, but nowhere else is it so beauti fully colored as here, every imaginable shade of red, green and brown being presented. The most remarkable fea ture of the park, and a phenomenon per haps unparalleled, is the natural bridge of agatized wood, spanning a canon. fifty-fiv feet wide. The tree is from three to four feet in diameter, and more tnan a hundred feet of its length are in sight, both ends being imbedded in the standstone at tbe sides of the canon. B, L. JOHXSiON, I. J. We refer to their hindering the drying of grain, by being themselves loaded with moisture which nothing but long exposure to Bun and wind can remove. By their presence grain is often kept from drying in wtt spells, wheu without them it would soon be in order for the barn. Some times the loss thus entailed has amount ed to nearly the full value of the crop. If glanders in horses is known to be anywhere around, keep up a sharp look out for it. The symptoms are a run ning at the nose, accompanied by ulcer ations in the nostrils, and warty excre sences in the glands of the throat. If either of these indications should be discovered in any animal, such an one BLould be at once separated from the others, and every precaution be taken to prevent Its further spread. The diseas ed animals 6hould be carefully handled, for the glanders have teen known to communicate to human beings, and in 6uch cases are almost sure to prove fatal. There is a good deal of talk about eleanliness in the ben house, but what does it mean? It means remove all the excrement every day, pot half of it, re new the nests often, using clean mate rial each time ; to keep the walls nice and sweet by the application of a eoat of whitewash occasionally ; to aim at having the fowls clean of insects by dos ing tbe roosts with some vermin killer, as well as the nest boxes, corners, etc.; to provide a suitable bathing place, us ing as the material for the ba'.h nature's strange choice for fowls, dry dust. All these things are wanted before we can call the hen house iu a clean, healthy state. Frequently brushing up the floor of scattered dust and filth is also necessary. j-.arnd for Sample Copies.
