K"B1 Townvttlp Item. ladies picniced at Chicago, III., is She is the guest The Hollidaysburg correspondent of the Altoona Tribune of Wednssday says: The board of directors of the Cresson and Coalport Railroad company had a meeting yesterday in the ofllee of the secretary, Mar tin Bell, Esq. Among other matters of business transacted yesterday, was the granting of an order for the payment of the construction of the road. The work is pro gressing rapidly and It is expected that car 8 will be running from Cresson to Coal port along the hanks of the Clearfield creek by November 1. A destructive tornado passed over por tions of Clearfield and Jefferson counties on Monday evening. In Henderson township, Jefferson county, great damage was done to standing tinmer and crops, a large number of farm buildings were unroofed. A large barn on 'Squire Miller's farm was com pletely demolished, and an orchard of 350 trees on the Beam farm was entirely de stroyed. The people In neighborhood vil laizes watched the funnel shaped clond as it passed from west to east, and were filled with fear lest tne whole section should be devastated. The whirlwind, however, soon rose froui the earth and passed from their vision as quickly as it came. The path of the storm was several miles in length, by a balf mile in width. The Carrolltown cortespondent of the Altoona Survday iiorning says that while Mr. Frank Schettig, a farmer living a few miles from that place, was at work several days ago In the harvest field with his team, a violent clapj ofj thunder frightened the horses and they broke and ran away, but there was no apparent stroke of llghning to do any injury in the vicinity. A day or two after, however, a disagreeably strong smell eraittedfrom the basement of his saw mill, attracted attention and an examination de veloped the fact that nine sheep were lying dead, huddled together in the basement of the mill. No mark or injury of any kind was visible npon any of them, but the pre sumption is that the shock of the heavy peal of thunder caused the death of the sheep. One of our citiiens residing In the sub urbs of the town one night last week was nervous and restless, and was annoyed by the tintinabulallon of a numberof cow-bells. He finally got bp and took a chair near a window, and while gazing over In the di rection from whence the serenade was com ing, saw his neighbor's meadow dotted over with all the cows in town. He concluded that the fence must be down and If he would "do as he would wish to be done by." he ought to to and turn them out. He put on his pants, and boots and informed bis wife of his charitable errand. When he reached the field imagine his surprise to find what be t'Hik to be cows were hay cocks scattered over the field and several cows on the street outside th fence were furnishing the music for his Imaginary cows. He slipped quietly back to his little bed and, now the music of a f.ow bell grates harshly to bis ears. Out norporti. Ac cordingiv, we attended the 10.30 Ma.s. On entering tbe church we found It not ciowd-d a we bad expected. We after wards learned that the members in the warm season always attended the early servlces The church was not more than half filled; and those in attendance, at least one-half seemed drawn there by motives of curios:tv. Tney were li ke ourselves, iotrnt on fiuht seeing, and tbe woisMp in tlie cathedra! was. with them, one of the sight. s X need not say here what is known to every intelligent Protestant and CathoMct that the CathoCc servioe is the same in every part ot the habitable globe. But outside of the service the preaching was in tbe French language, and a pastoral address, in Fiench to us really seemed tedious and we were Dot sorry when the services closed. Yet, we could not fail to notice.nearly all North eners and Protestants while inattentive to the solemn services of the mass, listened with the ears of connitstrtto the sacred tone of the deep-voiced organ, and the highly cu!t;vared voices which accompanied it. Jut as services closed we met Gen. Koon'z and Counsellor Uhl, of Somerset. And the sacred edifice in which we met did not prt-veut the warm greetings of old friends, meeting thousands of miles away trom our several homes. Their tour had been the same as ours, but in a different di rection, and on separata paths crossed in the N. O. cathedral.
