Alexander Ilihbard, a young roan living
in Milwaukie, on Friday last swallowed a
silver dollar and at latest accounts was still
living. The case is r.tttr.ctins mueh atten
tion and many visitors call at the young
man's house dally, among them having been
a number of prominent physicians from oth
er cities. His attending physician keeps him
on a diet of milk and cornmeal and is ad
ministering powerful medicines. He ex
presses his confidence that tbe coin will be I
removed without fatal results Ex. This
shows the dangers of a depreciated silver i
currency, aDd is a strong argument In fayor I
of stopping the coinage of silver. The diffi- i
culty In passing it is its greit objection, and
is very forcibly illustrated in this case.
A Paying Investment.
One of the latent enterprises spoken of
In this place is a steam grist mill, and with
in the last month two different pf ties have
been examining into the surroundings with
a view to building a mill. That a mill in
this place would pay is not questioned, as
there is a large amount of good wheat raised
in the neighborhood, and the quantity la
yearly Increasing, while th amount of flour
shipped to this place alone would furnish a
good trade for a mill. It would aUo furnish
our farmers with a market for erain that
they now have to take to either J .hnsrown
or Altoona to dispose of. The ground csu be
bought low; the lumber and building mate
rials can be obtained as cheap, if not c! eap
er than at almost any j.ther place, while the
railroad facilities for shipping to and from
the mill would be as goo.1 as at any other
point along the Pennsylvania railroad, and
we think our borough officials should, and
we baye no doubt would, give the project
ors some substantial encouragement in the
way of exemp'ion from taxation for several
years. The number of mining towns in the
near neighborhood would also furnish a mar
ket for the flour that Is now brought from
mills located in oilier ct.unties, and the un
developed mineral wealth In a'l diiections
gives a promising assurance that the borne
demand must always be on the increase.
Two Children Burned to Death.
On last Monday olght an old tenement
house situate on tbe turnpike a short dis
tance west of Duncansvble, B'alr county, in
which the families of Aaron Isett and Sain.
Black resided was destroyed by fire. Mrs.
Black, whose husband waa awa from home,
aroused her children, as she supposed, and
taking the youngest, an inTanf, lu her arms
made her escape through the fire and smoke,
followed by her little girl about 10 years old.
After the mother reached the outside she
discovered that her two bojs. aifed 3 and 8
years were still in the burning building, and
was only prevented by members of the lsett
family, f torn rushing in at the great risk of
ber own life, to rescue them. The unfortu
nate children were both burned to death.
Tbe Isett family all escaped.

Mv older readers fn Ebens'rirg and vicin
ity will remember X. B. Wolfe. He was in
the employ of tbe late Captain Andrew
L wis, then a plasterer In Enensbnra. He
was just entering manhood, of a stout, rud
dy complexion, and a sanguine tempera
ment. He performed his whole doty during
the day and studied at ntKht. He was, as
was the writer of this, a devoted temperance
t advocate.
Here I cannot refrain from interrupting
my travels. N. B. olfe had written for
the newspaper a very readable aiticle main
ly or. ternpfraree, which was published in
the newpater with his name affixed. An
Illiterate fellow of the name of Jacob Camp
bell bad rented a room m the Academy
wtere he resided with his family. Sonw
was used his name and tor the purpose of
hurle'-que. dated an article from "Academy
Building, Ebensbnrg," and replied to the
article of Wolfe, rejoined over his own
name, and th controversy became an heat
ed that the final article of Mr. Wolfe was
refused, and he in a circular wound up the i
controversy in a very able and bitter conclusion-
An amusing feature of the controver-y
was that ever after, Jacob Campbell (tbo'
scarcely able to write his name), claimed,
ano seemed to believe that he had really
writu-n the articles to which his name was
appended.
Dr. Wolfe completed his studies removed
to Cincinnati acquired at once a hicb repu
tation and immense practice and what is
better has become very wealthy. He lias a
large interest in property in the city and its
vicinity. He has aln a half interest in the

On Monday the 25th inst , one of the most
Interesting and imposing religious ceremo
nies ever performed in this portion of the
county, will take place in St. Benedict's
Catholic church. On that day the beautiful
new altar will be consecrated by Rt. Rev.
Boniface Wimmer, Arch Abbot of St. Vin
cent's Monastry. A Pontifical High Mass
will be clebrated the first ever witnessed
on the Alleghenles. About twenty priests
will be present in all, from Piltsburi?.
; Johnstown, Altoona, and other places
j Rev. O P. Oallairher. of Johnstown, and
j Very Rev. F a her Michael, Prior of St. Vin
! cent, will deliver sermons; the former in
j English and tr.e latter in German. Trie cer
! erroides will commence at 9 o'cloc. a. m.
I The new altar is among the finest of work
I manship In this country. It was manufac
j tured in Munich, Bavaria, from that great
j artist, John Marggraff. almost two years'
I time having been expended In its construc
i tion. It in of the pure Gothic style, which
j has onlv been produced in the Middle Ages,
i In the iftnsa is the Lamb with the Book of
the Sevrti Seals, and on either side the sacri
fice f Ahraham aud Metchisedech, in relief.
The tabernacle is richly gilded with sign
work. On either side or the tnbernacle Is
an adoring angel and the holy Evangelist al
, leifoticaliy represented. Above this in main
j r-ltef is the statue representing St.. Bene
dict (the Patron Saint of the church) Bend
! ing out St. PIncidus and St. Maurus as mis
i sionarles, a true ideal of great feeling and
I dignity. On one side of tte main relief are
t the Matures representing St. Otto and St.
! Anselm.and on tbe other SS. Scholastica and
Gertrude. These statues are four feet high
and proportionate. At even a close inspec-
tion they would convince the beholder that
' they were of wax-work, so delicately and
j perfectly is every feature produced ; but
i tiiey ar actually carved from wood. The
1 Diain portion of the altar is made of Bavari
an oak. beautifully and artistically carved,
with gilt finish. The tahle of the altar is of
; Italian marble. As near as I can learn, this
altar, as It stands in the church, cost about

Mr. Henry Able, of Elder township, has
for some time past been annoyed by a man
disguised who visited at various times bis
cellar and barn, surreptitiously carrying off
his provisions and gra n. It was represent
ed here for some time that Mr. Able had ptjt
a ball of cold lead through the middle of the
carcass of the thief, but on close inquiry I
find that the rumor is without foundation,
other than that Mr, Able has been lying in
wait for him with a Winchester rifle, and we
would not be surprised to hear of somebody
being shot if they persist in their depreda
tions. Two men, one woman, a baby and a dog,
are encamping in the woods south of town.
The woman visits town daily, and with what
money she can derive from the sale of pic
tare frames, etc., manufactured from cigar
boxes and acorns, and all she can beg from
onr citizens, manages to keep the two vaga
bonds, her baby and dog, from starving, to
say notbingof what mieht he stolen at night
by way of a dessert. The woman claims to
bail from Harrisburg, and tbe men are her
travelling companions.
Mr. Andrew Haug is building an addition
