The country is full of ad- venturer who prey ion two elassps dis tinctively. First, those who believe that all newspapers are liars, and second, that clas3 who subscribe for the paper that is sold for the least moaey without reference to the reading matter it con tarns. Among the most successful swindlers are those who take a promis sory note, for some swindle they have to sell, either drawn in such a irannerthat it may be altered or separable, or else under the pretense that it will not be presented until the article is tested. A good authority says : A promissory note is a written agree ment to pny a certain sum of money at a certain time. It must be definite and unconditional. It is therefore in the nature of money ; being negotiable, and where payable to bearer, the property in it passes by the mere delivery of the pa per on which it is written. It is not subject to all the defenses that are Rood as against other contracts. For exam ple, it i3 generally good in the hands of an innocent holder, though the maker of it li.vi lost it, or had been stolen, or obtained from him by fraud. This may be the case, even though it bad been al tered or "raised," as where I give my note signed in blank to a person, author izing him to fill in a certain amount, as 510, and he fills in a larger arnount s 100, and ells it to an innocent purchas er. I must pay the larger amount for I it was who permitted the fraud to be committed ; and an old maxim of the law holds that were one or two innocent persons to suffer from the wrongful cts of a third, the loss must be borne by the one who enabled such third person to occasion it. The justice of this is obvious, and any sensible man will appreciate the necessity of protec ting, in the largest degree, the rights of bona fide holders of negotiable instru ments, which form part of the currency of the country, and if subject to all the defenses of other written contracts would be deprived of their main value. Our advice is never to give a note un less written in the ordinary form, and you should know perfectly the contents thereof. The great number of frauds that have been perpetrated on the far mers of Western States and Territories by patent right men and worth'ess agri cnltural machinery agents, should be sulTicient excuse for you to have nothing to do with men, Specially in important transactions, who cannot satisfy your banker, lawyer or merchant that they aie all right. Another fraud is that of conveyance. The following decision is a ca?e in point. Where a party conveys his property to a third party when judgments are out standing against him, ami such convey ance is with the intent to defraud his creditors, and the fraud is participated in by his purchaser, his title will not be protected, e en though he paid sufficient consideration. Williams vs. Nachen heim. Sup. Court of Iowa. So, again, when a note i3 executed by two or more parties, any alteration in it without the consent of all, notwithstand ing the alteration was entirely honest and with no fraudulent intent, will be deemed a material one. Graighead vs. McLonv, Sup. Court, Pa., . Leg. In tel. 2s(. I". relation to mortgages there always has been and always will be tliftlenltit'S. A careful nine will never mortgage his home except as a last resort to rsie money for legitimate purposes. In this connection a peculiar systca of mort gaging farms in Switzerland will bo in teresting : A farmer may. borrow of a dozen or more men successively, and the simple record in an official book showing their order. If he falls to pay, a succes sor is found for him by beginning at the bottom of the list of debtors, and calling on each in his order to assume all the debts and manage the farm, or step aside and lose his claim. A Shaking Mocntain. Alout. four months ago a number of miners explor ed El Monte Arnargo. the Bitter moun tain in Northern Chili. Near the top of the mountain they found something of which they had heard marvelous stor ies the eye of the Gold. This mine of poetic name was examined to the disap pointment of the whole party. Evening had crept on and it was too late to des cend, so the Califomians lighted a Gre under a rock near the summit there to pass the night. A furious wind was blowing from the neighboring desert of Atamaca. Suddenly the wind dropped, an unnatural calm and silence followed Then came a confused murmur as from a distant, angry crowd of people, swell ing to a grinding, crushing sound. A slight shiver ran through the mountain, succeeded by a more positive rocking motion. The men got upon their feet as quickly as possible, but in another moment all wer shaken down. One of the prospectors says that the mountain seemed to sink beneath them. A horrid roar prevad"d all space, and Monte Arn argo beCowed like the wind-stirred sur face of the oce.i;. The men were seized with naseau and indescribable feeling of despair. The frightful phenomenon lasted less than half a minute, and when it was over earth and sky was as quiet and peaceful as ever. They had exper ienced "a trembler," said to be worse on the Bi! ter mountain than at any oth er place known.' The Reckless Bkk. An experi menter in Southern agriculture told me . , - , . . , .t . , I the following hlStonette Of IS orthern I bees in the South. He tock a colony of the little gral nitons honey-makers down in Florida. The first year they reveled, throve and stored honey nearly all the year few of the wore reflective bees evidently turned the thing over in their miiuls thus : "This conn try has no win- j ter to provide agaiti.it ; what is the real use of laying up honey when the flower crows all the vear round ?" These bees exerted enough influence among their I friends to keep a good many bees from j laying by their sweet merchandise the ; second year of their exile. I But the prudential instinct so strong j in the little insect, prevailed with the i majority. They evidently said to them- j selves; ''Perhaps this has been an ex- j cold and snow and dearth of flowers." So there was quite a stock of honey laid by the second year in spite of the few ' strikers. But by the third year the con ! viction had evidently thoroughly pene j trated the mind of the bee that it was i foolish to lay up in the land of eternal i blossom. They made just enough to last from day to day, abandoned them selves to living from hand to mouth as recklessiy as does any tropic-born but terfly. - Sometimes carpets and rugs become badly spotted and it does not seem ad visable to take them up. The following method will then be found excellent : Rub a piece of hard soap upon every spot of grease ; then take a hard scour ing brush and dip it into a large basin of water, in which two tablespoonfuls of water of ammonia have been stirred, or a piece of carbonate of ammonia has been dissolved. Ttub hard until all the stain has disappeared ; then rinse it off with clear water ; and if the color3 seem dimmed, add mough alum to the hist water to make it quiet sour, and this will restore their brightness. Isatjeau, of Bararia, queen of Charles V., sent a collection of dolls, dressed in the latest Freneh Btyles, to th queen or England, thus introducing the latest French fashions in a waj which has been imitated of late years as a novelty. A curious spring in St. Tammany par ish. La., runs clear, cold water all day lonjr. but at sunset cot-s suddenly dry, discharging no water until the sun rises again. A Montana raper has discovered a gorpe in the Yellowstone where, it as serts, the atmosphere is a non conduc tor of sound No matter how loud one shouts, he can't ba heard. In 1770, or thereabouts, the tomato was almost unknown in Paris. To the southern French, who invaded France at thq time of the Revolution, its accli matizing is due. It was a cost ly luxury at first, but at the end of 18015 it was sold at Les Ilalles by the half dozen. In Russia on March 9, the day on which the larks art) supposed to arrive the rustics make clay images of the bird smear them with honey, tip their wings with tinsal, and then carrv them about singing songs to spring, 'or to Lada, their vernal goddees. A painful and mischievous custom pre vailed on May eve, in the South of Ire land, so late as the year 1825. It was a common practice of school bovs on that day to consider themselves permitted to run wildly about with a bunch of net tles, striking at the face and hands of their companions, or any person whom they felt that they could assault with impunity. j The tunnel cut in the main range of ! mo roc.y mountains, in) miles south west of Denver, Col., is the highest eith er in America or Europe, and its ap proaches is described as marvels of En gineering skill, laid through scenes un rivalled for grandeur and magnificence. It is 1.70t3 feet in length and 11, & JO feet above the level of the sea. So nicely was the engineering done, that when the workmen met, the variation in the bores was only about one inch. It was the work of the Denver and South Park division of the Union Pacific rail road. In farming districts cf Denmark, where smoking is almost universal, and pipes with huge china bowls are as com mon as rnile stones are scarce on coun try cross roads, distance is more fre quently measured by "pipes'' than by miles. The easy-going, sol ways of the people make this expedient practicable. Great is the amazement of thy traveller, however, at being told, in answer to his inquiry about the distance to the next town, that it is so many '"pipes of to bacco." Experience will te:ich him that at the steady gait and pull of the native atoiit two English miles, or halt a Danish mile make a "pipe." The blue jay is the boldest and most mischievous of wild birds. Near Knox viile, Tenn., recently, one was seen to fly a numner of times to a high picket lence to attract a pair of kittens that were Dlavintr on the lawn. The kitteno. finally mounted the fence and be on a I cautious approach from picket to picket. The jay let the first get within eighteen j inches, then hopped over between the' two. l lie second kitten approached and the bird hopped over it. It turned, and then the jav hopped back and between. The Srst kitten approached and the jav hopped back over it, and so kept it up until one kitten got disgusted ami left, and the other soon folMwed. Once or twice afterwards the jay tried to in veigle the kittens to another frolic, but without success. The IIosriTAni.E Polks. The Poles are extraordinarily hospitable. They entertain without grudge. At every ta ble in the large houses some extra places are laid ready for unexpected guests as they say, "for the traveler that comes over the sea," It is possible in Poland to g uninvited to visit your friend, ta king your children, servants and horses, and stay five or six weeks without get ting any hint to go. The Poles are fond of gayety, amusement and society , They love pleasure in all its bright and charm ing forms. The country houses are al ways full of visitors, and in winter there is often the "Kulig" a gathering which increases as is goes from house to houe. It is taken from an old peasant custom, and the nobles, when they get up a "Kulig" wear the peasant customs, very beautifully made. They go over the snow in sledges from house to house, dancing for two or three days at one and then going on to another, taking the people of the house which they leave with them. At last, there are ierhaps twenty sledges, all full of people, dress ed in briirht colors, and singing the song of the Kulig. At every house they dance the characteristic dance of the oc casion the Kiakomiak, the Mazure and the Oberek. The latter is a very pretty and peculiar dance, in which the part ners continually turn away from each other and then come face to face : the Maznr is something like the quadrille, though it is by no means the same ; the Oberek resembles a waltz danced the re verse way and with a very pretty and characteristic figure, in which the man kneels and kisses his partner's hand. These are ail most charming and pretty and the Poles dance with enthusiasm as well as grace. They have many nation al customs and ceremonies which aie occasions for dancing and pleasure. Then, in the autumn and winter there is bear hunting. In this way, with these varied amusements, the time passes in the country houses, and visitors will stay six weeks, or perhaps six months. Temple liar. A Drove of OprossuMS. E. T. M1 Cord, of Charlotte, N. C, has for years made a business of collecting oppossums, which he sells during theChrismas hol idays. He started on Thanksgiving day for the mountains to collect a diove of 'possums. He arrived at Davidson col lege about the middle of December with 133 'possums, which he drove along the load as though they were so many hogs. He camped at Davidson College, secur ing his drove by means of poles, having ten 'possums to a pole. lie keeps three dogs barking all night, and these keep the 'possums so frightened that they keep a firm grip to the poles until the sun is up. This is the first time he has ever tried the experiment of driving 'possums like cattle, and during the whole journey he has lost only two, one of which escaped by falling th rough a bridge. They followed their leader, which was led by a string.
