Woreector. af ACEATS SAUTED. t'OAL TAIS AS AN A.NTISLLTK'. Mr. James F. Cliff, Wc-di Brotuvv ieh, England, writing to the British Live Stock Ji nrwd of the very valuable qual ities of coal-tar and its derivative, car bolic acid, as antiseptic, disenfectants, and as bein.E- very destructive to parasi tical life, gives the general outlines of the purpose to which he considers them app)icable, leavinj? farmers and others to draw their own conclusions as to what may le the best use to make of them in. any particular case : "There is no doubt that the presence of carbolic acid in coal tar is the cause of its utility as a disinfectant, and al though for many purposes carbolic acid would be preferable if not essential, still there are many cases in which coal tar is quite as effectual and far more easily applied, As an antiseptic I have seen many cases of wounds beinej pre vented from purifying or iK'cominc fly brown by a timely application. When by neglect they have become putrid, or even swai ruing with lice or macots, a smearing or two of tar has soon caused them to assume a h- althy tone. Malig nant sores, s'ich r.s foot rot or foul in the foot, are quickly brought into a healthy condition, ai:d the disease is prevented from recurring, by onthm inj the application until the .--kin is re placed, as from the greasy nature of tar it forms a plaster on the wound, preven ting mud arid dirt Ci mii.g in contact which greatly impede neovery. "As a d.sii.fectant coal tar is vptv ser viceable in all bundles in which live stock aie kept, and is very easily applied by painting with it all the wood work, or indeed walls a3 well, if light is not an object. All foul gases and objectionable smell, putrid and unwholesome matter are cuickly overcome and rtndered harm less, and at the same tim-3 insects and parisites which usually intest such plac es are immediately destroyed. For a great many purioses no doubt coal tar would be objectionable, and in such ca ses carbolic acid, in some of its forms is to be preferred. "As I have said, the acid is the effec tive principle of the tar and may bo re lied upon to serve all purposes thor oughly. As an antiseptic ointment for Sores in exposed places on light colored animals or on pets in which coal tar would look uncleanly or unsightly the acid, in varied proportions with lard, olive oil, or other suitable ointment as a basis, forms a safe an 1 effectual appli cation. I have also used it successfully internally in a case of canker in the mouth of a cow by a suitable dilution with glycerine and water. Disinfecting powder is'another useful form in which the acid can be employed, as it is not so unsightly as the tar when scattered on the Floors and walls, and a little, used frequently, quickly deodorizes and puri ties its surrouudings. "Again, its use as a furr.igator has frequently came under my personal no tice. I believe that in this form its ef fect is roost marked. A little acid put on a heated shovel (not rod hot) will quickly deodorize a:id disinfect a large building, as the fumes ascend, and pen etrate all nooks and crevices. Another form ot tho same process is to keep boiling a small vess'd filled with water, and frequently add a quantity of carbol ic acid, when the steam will disseininato the fumes with equal effect. It was the knowledge of the effective nature of carbolic acid in this form as a disinfect ant which first induced mo to write these abrupt notes, thinking they might beef service, more particularly in cases of pieuro-pneuLuonia, in which inhala would be Tin re likely than any other treatment to prove successful. "My practice in cass requiring inter nal application has been to dissolve the acid in glycerine and water, and to di lute until as strong as the mouth can bear without a burning sensation, when it may be administered with safety to any one of our domestic animals. For outward use I have one part acid to ten cf lard, olive oil, or other suitable oint ment ; while, for disinfecting purposes, a common quality may be used, with from five to ten times its bulk to water. It will be well-known to ruost of your readers that coal tar may be obtained where the manufacture of gas is carried on ; while carbolic, although certainly more of a monopoly, is manufactured on a large scale in various parts of the kingdom, and can be procured from auy druggists." The nt-xt day he quarreled with his servant, who, beins dismissed, betrayed his former master, and he told a dreadful story of a yotinir man who was concealed within Klng-Fu, and who suffered hor rible agonies during each preformance. The police intervened, and found that there certainly wasja hoy (Rosen's own iit-phew) inside King-Fu, but that he was, all things considered, pretty com fortable, and certainly suffered eo hi: ny. The papers got;wind of the affair, and Rosen announced his departure from Vicuna. Hut justice, in the shape of the police, stopped him, and actually put him in prison on the charge that he t nai eiicateu the public out of ii'J.OoO florins. After five days of detention M. Rosen was liberated, there being no real charge against hiin. The public, though duped, was entirely on M. Rosen's side. Those who lielieved that a machine, once wound up, could answer multitud inous questions must have believed in a miracle; and those who did not believe it must have tacitly known that they were being deceived in some manner. When M. Dr. Wood, professor of chemistv in the Medical Department of Bishop's Cd Upe. Montreal, reports in the Canada Medical Ii--rrd a number of cases in which acute articular rhueumatism was cured by fastinp, usually from four to eipht days. In noc.ise was it necessary to fast more than ten days, Less posi tive results ware obtained in cases of chronic iheumatism. The patient was allowM to drink freely of cold water or lemonade in moderate quantities it they preferred. No medicines were piven. Dr. Wood says that from the quick and almost invariably pood results obtained by simple abstinence from more than forty cases in his own practice he is in clined to believe that rheumatism is, af ter all, only a phaze of indipestion', to be cure. 1 byjnvinj complete and contin ued rest to all viscera.
