Almost immediately after die first ap pe.u.uici of the irnlusirioiM little birds they commence their preparations for liou.i-keepiii:?. The male bird Hies bus ily about selecting s u -1 1 material as feathers, plants, fibres, the furze from ferns, the catkins from willows, and other similar objects, ail of which he he brings to his mate, who arranges and fashions thir doliea'e nest. So ouii:k!v an 1 del't Iv do this little couple I lab .r that they build a irr ater part of ! their house, in a single day. Thero is often a third party interested iu the construction of this nest, a home less happy-go-lucky Jjoiiemian bird, who has a tramp's interest in the housekeep ing arran-rt mentsof most of the smaller feathered denizens of copse ami woods. This is the well-known co w-blackbird, who distains to shackb? her freedom with the care of a family, and shifts a mother's responsibility by farming lier progeny out, whilu she seeks the incon jjrtioin but apparently congenial com panionship of tne cattle, with whom she apiH?ars to bo on the, most intimate terms. The cow-blackbird deposits its eggs indiscriminately amon the nests of smaller birds. The blackbird's eggs pern-rally hatch out a day or two sooner tli i i the adopted mother's own eggs, so, when the legitimate members of the family do come, it is to find their nest already occupied by the strong, lusty in terlopers, who, on account of their su perior size and strength, come in for the linn's share of food brought to the nest. Thus the innocent parents rear the aliens, while their own young starve, It is really a pitiable sight to see a cou ple of liitle greenlets searching from daybreak till evening for food to rill the capacious cropof one or more young row-blackbirds, considerably larger than themselves. Toe summer yellow-birds, though con fiding little creatures, are riot readily duped or imposed upon. Their instinct is 8'iiik-iently near reason for there to detect the difference between their own little fracile, prettily-marked, greenish colored egy"s, and the great dark-colored ones the vagabond cow-blackbird has surreptitiously smuggled into the cosy nest. The domestic little couple cling to the .spot selected for their house anil will not leave it, neit her will they hatch the obnoxious eggs, which they are ap parently unable to throw out ; but the ditlicuUy is soon surmounted, and soare the gratuitous fggs, for the indefatiga ble workers proeeed at once to cover up the cow-blackbird's eggs, constructing j a ni w nest on top ot the old one, build ing a second story, a a it were, to their Jioue, Last summer Mr. Lang Gibson found one of these t wo-.-tory nests at Flushing, J.. 1. T'h3 lower nests had two cow b!.i . kbird's egg-, arid the upper one three eggs of the i-'.iiiuiu-r yellow-bird, Gib son w.'te!:' I the Construction of the nest. So'ii-' !'.!' afterwards, to his sur prise, he iotiiei the nest contained threo eggs of the vi i; e.vbiid and no signs of the exi-li.-ni.-e of those deposited by the blaekbir 1. but the nest had the appear ance of being much taller than at first, ate! :u examination disclosed the true farts i if the case. Mr. Nuttal was the first naturalist to r eel the ob.-erva'.ioa of two-story bird rie-.i-. Mr. li.iird nenlinis a three story nest, each of the lower nests con taining the eggs of the cow-blackbird, tic wh ile structure being seven inches hi-h. IJorLINO IJllOTH IV tiik Andk. In llyraui's '"Wanderings in Chili and Te rn," we f.nd the f jl!ovii)g remarkable illustration of one of the well known laws ofhe.it : reeling very cold we de termined to have soni" soup to warm lis and having plenty f meat ami onions, we cut them up. put them into a sauce pan, with sik ami Cayenne pepper, and set them u to boll, I only relate this for the information of those who have not been to great, heights, those who wish to go there, and a!.o of those who, perchance, may beiieve that boiling is the same thing the world over. After our soup bad bubbled away in the most orthodox style for aV.ut two hours, we naturally concluded that, our "bouillon" was ready and the meat perfectly done, especially as the last had been cut into rather small pieces; but, to our great surprise, we f itn.d the water almost coloih-ss, and the meat almost as raw as when it was hr.-t put into the pot. One of the miners told us that it, was no use trying to boil anj thing, as nothing could be cooked with water from the top of tli.d mountain ; for, although the water bubbled away very fast, the heat was not great ennugh to boil a potato. At great alt itudes the water begins to boil long before it arrives at the heat of 212 degrees of Fahrenheit, and as water cannct le hotter than the boiling point, except by the compression of the steam, nothing can be cooked unless some safe ni 'ans of cor. tilling the steam be adopt ed. I paw directly bow matters lay, and, sticking the lid tight on the pan, tii i'lo it tight with heavy lumps of sil ver that were lying about, attaching them to the handle, and putting others on the top of all. In a very short time the fit earn got up, and, though it made the lid jump a little, I managed to get a broth, to the great surprise of the min ers, who could not conceive what I was about. Tfie Boiiacic Acid Treatment of DiniTHEKiA. Dr. T. 1). Harris, of AlerystwiHi. reports in the Lancet a very successful treatment of diphtheria by the local application of Ixiracic acid in solution. The solution is prepared n nd applied as follows : Iloracic acid, two drachms ; glycer ine, half an ounce to be applied freely to the fauens at tirt, diminishing in frequency with the disappearance of the deposit and general symptoms. The plication should lo continued for some days after the throat lias become per fectly clean. If discontinued too abrupt ly, the deposit is almost certain to re form, with a ret rn of the general sniptoms ; f:v1 with a riew of warding off this danger, I make it a rule to con tinue painting m to tne eighth day, af ter which day the p itio-it n.iy be consid ered compare: ively safe. The solution see-iis to have :o injurious effect when swallowed, us I have frequently applied an ounceduring twenty-four hours in the cacsof children of from four to five years of age. REMEMBER That You Tite Troy Pre tells of a farmer who has tried a remedy for potato bugs with success. lie procured a number of boards and placed here and there among bis potatoes, and on these boards were place few raw potatoes sliced. At noon on the first day of his experi ment be and bis hired men found every piece of iotato covered with bugs. The men killed this crop, and at night anoth er crop was killed, though not so large. and in a week's time not a bug could be peen, and his trouble with bugs after that was comparatively small. In the ppnng, he say, is the best time to at tend to the bugs, us a spring bug breeds from 2tK) to CXj during the season. He thinks it would le a good plan to dip the potato in paris green, as it would save the work of killing them. Teruna is a wonder in itself. It cures the most hopelePg eases of con-utnption. l rt ra. v t 71 I . mm. 5 rici K 3 t: ... V A are invited to visit OAK HALL, S. E. Cor. 6th & Market Sts.
