Easlv, a gentleman of more than, ordinary ability as a newspaper writer, and a brother-in-law by first marriage of the editor of this paper, while it will, of course, causa a deep feeling of sincere regret among his numerous frienda, will not occasion any sudden sur prise, owing to the fact that his health has been greatly impaired for several years past. He was the victim of consumption, aud al though on several occasions he seemed a'oout entering into the valley of the shadow of death, his life was prolonged until at last, wearied and worn out by repeated hemorr hages, he laid himself down and with patient submission calmly awaited the end that he felt was slowlv but surelv approaching. He ! was a son of Hon fionrtru'W. Easl v. of Johns town, where he was born, and died at the residence of his father, in that place, about one o'clock on last Sunday morning, being at the time a few months over forty-one years of age. When the civil war broke out the subject of this sketch enlisted for three months in Opt. Suter's company of Johnstown Zou aves, and at the end of his term he entered Col. Speakman's 13Hd Pennsylvania Regi ment for the nine months' service, at the end of which he returned home. Even then his he:i!t!i was delicate, and Hfter working a short time at his trade, that of a carpenter, be took charge of the local depaitment of the Altoona Vindicator, then published by Jas. F. Campbell, and when that paper suspend ed lie connected himself for a shot t time w ith the Erie Observer, and then returned to Johnstown, where he commenced the study of law and was admitted to the bar in 1870. In 1873, when the Johnstown Iai!y Tribune was established, he became its local editor, a position which he filled with more than ordi nary ability up to within a short time pre vious to his death. As an industrious, pains taking tatherer of home news he had ho su perior, and always made the local col umnsjof the Tribune exceptionally interesting and entertaining to the readers of that journal, whose editor, we have no doubt, will serious ly feel the loss of bis readv and industrious pen. His connection with the rri6ncaused him to lie widel v known throughout the west ern part of the state, and those who formed his acquaintance will always bear his mem ory in cherished recollection. His friends were legion, and we do not think he had an enemy in the world. One year ago Iat Christmas Mr. Easly was married to the eldest daughter of our good friend Alvar Akers, a well known citizen of Johnstown, and their wedded life was as liappv as it was short lived. At the election last Xovembf r the deceased was elected to the office of Coroner of the county on the Democratic ticket by the larg est vote received hv any candidate at that time, and took out his commission, but never served. His funeral, which was largely attended, took place on Monday forenoon from St. John's Catholic church, where a solemn Re quiem Mass was celebrated by Rey. Father Corcoran, after which his remains were in terred in the family lot in the old Conemaugli borough cemetery, where the remains of his mother and other members of the family rest. His father, three brothers and one sister sur vive him. Thai the soul of our kinsman and friend has found peace eternal is the earnest prayer which wii! ascend to (tod from many a loving heart. In the long aDd ex ceedingly well written obituary of the above named gentleman, published in the Johns town Tribune of Monday last, we find the following which we deem worthy of repro duction : In the latter part of 1854 lie (Easly) visited Mexico, partly for the benefit of hit health and partlv In the hope of profiting by a speculation that opened uu, and which seemed to otter larse returns. He was for a time In charm) of a body of workmen enaifed on a railroad that was then building from Vera t'ruz to the City of Mexico, and it was while thus employed that he had a most thrilling experience. Maximilian, Archduke of Austria, alter accejiting the crown of Mexico from Napoleon HI., had landed in the "new king dom'' a lew months beT'TO. and scenes of vlolen- e and bloodshed were of frequent occurrence. Mr. Kasly wis one day so unfortunate as to be In th Immediate vicinity of a small squad of the ambi tious Maximilian's soldiers when they were sur rounded by a lariro body ot hostile ( Jrensers and taken prisoners. He was suspected of beln In sympathy with the foreivners, and was oblied to co alonir. The soldiers were at once condemned to be hong and nineteun of them were executed before Mr. Kaslv's eyes. His turn had just come when a new Mexl an arrival, a friend, recoanixed him and secured his release. The Oreasers first robbed him of everything he possessed, and then told him to git." which he was not lonif In dotnfr. He afterward edited the American department of a nper that was printed in Vera Orux, and on it did his first reuul ir journalistic work. I i We should have returned thanks ete this ! to Co. Sup't Straver for a neatly arranged. ; : and handsomely printed pamphlet contain ; ing the full proceedings of the fifteenth an nual session of the Cambria County Teach ers' Institute, held in Johnstown during the last week of December, 18.S1, and also the name and poistoffi.ee address of each, teacher and et'ch secretary of a school boaid in the county. The pamphlet was printed at the Johnstown Tribune office, and like all work emanating from that establishment, it is in the highest degree creditable. It was an error of the head and not of the heart whicli led us to pass by unnoticed a verv welcome visit indeed two of them recently paid us by our worthy friend ar.d patron, Mr. Martin Bvrne, of Allegany coun tv, Md., who cal'ed to see us while going to at.d returning from Barr township, where his venerable parents and others of the family reside, and with whom be spent a few days week before last. Mr. IJyrne was born and partially raised in ElM-tishurg. and there are many here who know him well and will al ways remember him as a son of Cambria who never did discredit to either himself or his birthplace. Long may he live and prosper. The Huntingdon Xtvs says that Mr. John M. Stewart, of Saulsburg, that county. has a flock of thirteen blooded Cotswold sheep, each imp of which had twins, and of the number twenty-five have been raised, j La-t year each of his sheep averaged about twelve pounds of wool, at S 5 50 a pound. He advises farmers who are obliged to keep ' only a small number of sheep to get the liesl, j as they don't cost as much to keep and give i a better return. Some of his neighbors are j beginning to see the sheep industry in the I same light and are improving their stock, j We trust that the same spirit will soon make ' itseir manifest among the farmers of Cam bria county. --It took Mx. R. F. Myers, the Altoona horse dealer, only about two hours at public auction in this place, on last Saturday after noon, to dispose of seventeen head of Texas horses, from three to six years old, several of them being marcs in foal. They sold at , an average price of about fifty dollars. The ! animals were in thin crtndition and of light ! build, but remarkably clean limbed. Thir- j teen of them were bought by residents of I Eliensburg, and the remaining lour by farm- j ers in the vicinity of town. Mr. Myers I i drove them from Altoona as a lot of mules I 1 are driven, and as none of them bad ever j 1 been broken to either harness or saddle, any ' amount of trouble and no little danger was experienced by the purchasers in getting j bead stalls on them to lead lliem bump, j The:r respective owners are now trying to j break them in, either personally or by de- puty. Mr. Henry (iarnian, in attempting on ' Monday to ride the steed he bought, was j unseated more than once, but kept on in bis I efforts until the animal finally threw him ! Douglass, Esq., of Chest Springs, made a very narrow escape ! from serious injury, if not instant Heath, on ; Tuesday of last week. Young Douglass has been employed at Joseph Van Ormer's log job, on Ciearfield creek, two miles from Ash- land, and at the time stated was engaged in : chopping down a small tree, which fell against an old dead bemhck, causing it to . swing back and break off, and in coming down it struck and slightly injured Mr. Dou ; glass on the head, shoulder ani! hip. besides j breaking a bone in one of bis !egs aliove the ankle. It also knocked him dosn and ren ; dered him unconscious for a time. The in ! lured man was promptly attended by Dr. ; Miller, who dressed his wounds and made i him as comfortable as possible, with every ; pn-spect for his speedy recovery. A close call it certainly was, for had the falling tree SrFrocA ted to Death. A ni.tti named J. II. Rrown. who came, to this place about ! one week ago, says the Johnstown Tribune of Monday, was suffocated early yesterday morning at No. ! blast furnace, where be j was employed. It seems that be had got through with his work for the time being, i and settled bimelf comfortably for a nap, will; bis head resting near a pipe through ' which pa-ses a stream of vei y poisonous gas. There was probably a flaw in the pipe, as i the unfortunate man inhaled a sullicient quantity of the itas to pToducedcnth. When his fci'o w-cmp!oyes were about to quit work j and leave the furnace one of them stopped to shake Mr. Rrown, thinking he had only fallen asleen. Seeing that he did not move, an examination was made, and it was found that lie was Head. The deceased l.c.d been boarding at the house of a man named Mc Laugldin, in Cambria City, and thither the body was taken, but Mr. McLaughlin de clined to receive it. Undertaker Blocli then removed it to his place of business on Rail road street, and was of course obliged to bury it as soon as possible. The funeral took place at half past 10 o'clock, the inter ment being made in Sandyvale Cemetery. A special telegram to the Pilisburg JjispaUh says that Mrs. Ma gee, residing near Jacksonville, Indiana county, died on Sunday last of what the doc tors pronounced a veritable attack of hydro phobia. She was the owner of a very large and very cross dog. .So vicious was he that he was kept chained, and no person except Mrs. Magee went near the brute. She was not afraid of him, and since the death of her husband, a year ago, assumed the duty of feeding the animal. Some two weeks aga, while feeding him, I ue caugui. ner i.ann in ins moutti ana man gled it severely. The wound was propetly cared for, but did not heal rapidly. On Sat urday last she manifested marked symptoms of hydrophobia. A physician was called, but failed to render any relief. She lingered in great agony until Sunday evening, when she died. Her convulsions were terrible to witness, and she almost constantly barked like a dog. She was about eighty years of age. FirGAX E AXI pmiTT.
