Pae aertrts the Joytmal rf Chnitry an account of experiment mrtda to ahow that oue mel a day t enough for a man : "S. N. a, twenty-eiffht yean old, re olve.d to adopt the one meal system, and did so, leavinsr oft meat and all condi ments, as salt and pepper, and eating chiefly wheatmcal bread and fruit, the bread mnde from unsifted meal, and mixed with water only, no salt or bread raising deTices unleavened. Within seven months his weight increased from one hundred and forty Are pounds to one hundred and seventy pounds, and hia strength of both body and mind in creased in proportion. Ilia labor had been severe ; he is a machinist and in-' ventor, working ten hou-a every day, and doifi.j a great deal of practical and profitable thinking at the same time. It is now a full year since he came to one meal, and the weight gained lias been maintained, and his health perfect. During the last winter, for the purpose of testing the sndioiency of one m?al of pure food for the most trying labor, lie worked in an iron foundry for three months, and notwithstanding the ex treme and frequent changes ot weather incident to the work, on cold mornings with the mercury below ze ro, and in the afternoon at 120 degrees abve, and all hands sweating like rain, he had not a 'cold for the winter, and was tin only employe thus exempt. He had been formerly subject to frequent attacks oT the same disease. His daily ration con sists of six ounces to nine ounces (ac cording to labor) of Graham flon', be sides fruit sufficient to supply all the liquids necessary half a dozen apples or their equivalent in other unit. He is rarely thirsty, but sometimes if too little fiuit is taken at meal time he takes a small draught of water in the crxirse of thedav. ThU meal is taken at night, after entire recovery from fa tigue, usually at about seven o'clock. During the month of May, lSl, he gain ed sixty hours, or six tuil days, working right through to midnight, and taking his 'breakfast,' after a short rest before retiring. No man in bis employ had gained so much tim. He has occasion ally made a trial of lwJted flour bread, but has invariably expc rienced a loss of weight and strength. "My own experience goes far to prove the efficacy of the above regimen for either the brain or muscle-worker. I am now taking but one meal a day, and find myself perfectly nourished, weight and strength maintained, on about 14 ounces of unleavened wheat-mpal bread to the mastication of which I devote an hour or more. I find that six ccld gems, weighing about fourteen otmcs, with out either butter or milk. chwed delib erately and thoroughly dissolve.! by the juices of the mouth, will sustain me much better than when eaten warm with butter or milk or both together ad ded, and eaten as fast as one naturally eats hot rolls and butter and bread and milk. Considering the marine in which people generally bolt their food, it is not strange that a large portion of it faiis of digestion. "Until a few months ago. I took my food in the morning, but I find evening the better time. During the day the brain and muscle can have everything their own way, without interfering or hindering digestion, and at evening, af ter a Miiiicient, rest, there is p: iTect tranquility of body and mind and 'leis ure to digest.' I had never been a 'good sleeper' until 1 adopted this system of diet. AV'IiMn I ate three mals of mixed diet. I c inld nnf, make the last oue sim ple enough to give me complete ibst at iiight, but now, when rested fiom my day's labor. 1 can cat my full vegetable meal aud sleep like a well fed babe. THE 1 10. MM 1J0CT0K. Dr. F!pck, a sorrmwliat celebrated ; Dresden rlicinist, attritiutf-s tlie prodim ; tiou of jdiniilcs and inflammation on the j forehead of some persons, in hot weah ! tr, to the presence of f.U or fatty sici.la I in the leather lining of hats. By ex per -! iment he has lately shown that the fat ) is contained in all leathers, and. al though small in quantity, is surtioient to produce theresult in question. To avoid the unpleasant effects he recom mends ruhbinp; the greasy leather with hurtit magnesia. To cure bunions, use pulverized salt petre and sweet oil. Obtain, at a drug gist's five or six cents' worth of saltpe tre ; put it into a bottle with sufficient olive oil to dissolve it; shake up well, and rub the inJlammed joints nijfht and morning, and more frequently if painful. When an individual repotted to have died of disuse of the heart, we are in the habit of regarding it as an inevi table event, as something which could not have been foreseen or prevented, and it i3 too much the habit when per sons suddenly fall down dead, to report the heart as the cause ; this silences all inquiry and investigation, and saves the trouble and inconvenience rf a js(Tir fcm. A truer report would have a ten dency to save many lives. It is through a report of the disease of the heart that many an opium eater is let off into the grave that covers at once his folly and his crime ; the brandy-drinker, too. quietly slides aiound the corner thus, and is heard of ro more ; in short, this report of the heart is thl mantle of char ity, which the polite coroner and sym pathetic physician throws around the graves of generous people. At a scien tific congress at Strasburg, it was repor ted, that of sixty-six persons who had suddenly died, an immediate and faith ful post mortem showed that only two persons had any heart affections what ever one sudden death in thirty-three from disease of the heart. Nine out of Bixty die of apoplexy one out of every seven while forty six, more than two out of three, died of lung affection, half of them from congestion of the lungs, that is. the kings were so full of blood that they could not work ; there was not room enough for air to get in to sup port life. It is, then, or considerable practical interest, to know Bonis of the common every d.ty causes ot this con gestion of the lungs, a disease which, the figures above being true, kills thre times as many iersons, at short warning as apoplexy ami heart disease together. Cold feet, tight shoes, light clothing, costive bowels, sitting stiil until chilled throiigli after having warmed up by la bor or ti long, hasty walk : going to sud denly from a close, heated room, as a lour.ger, or listener, or speaker, while the lioily is weakened by continual ap plication, or abstinence, or heated by a long address; these are the frighful causes of sudden death in the form of congestion of the lungs ; hut which, be ing fa'seiy reported sis disease of the heart, and regarded as an inevitable event, throw people off theii guard, in tead of pointing them to their true cause, all of which are avoidable ; and very easily so, as a general rule, when the mind has been once inW'lligi-ntly tfrawn to the subject. It la not alone because of tb growing scarcity of tlrnber that the deal ruction of our fcresta, particularly in the thick ly settled sections of the enst", is to be deprecated. It lias long been a j-opuhir belief that forest exercise a decidedly favorable Influence on climate aurl water supply, and this belief ia fullj sanction ed by the results of a aeries of experi ments recently made by certain distin guished French scientists. In the last issue of the American Naturalist Dr. J. M. Anders gives an interesting tum niinj; up of the latest reeearcheson tne subject. Koiests influence the atmos phere mainly by their effect on its gen eral humidity ,Ar. evaporation of mois ture from both earth and trees takes place constantly. The evaporation is greater from open soil than from wood land, but the difference is far more than made up by what is called "transpira tion."' of leaves cf the trees. The quan tity of the insensible vapor that is given off through the leaves is immense, amounting to one and a quarter ounces to the square foot of leaf surface. Pains taking experiment have enab'ed those studying the matter to make an approx imate estima'.e of the comparative amounts of vapor given off by earth sur face and leaf surface. They have calcu- i lated that a square foot of soil sets free j about six times as much moisture as a j square foot ot leaf. The surface is, i however, many times greater than soil i surface twelve times creater, the scien tists put it so that twice as much eva poration takes place from forests as from open land. When the wood of the century is cut away, therefo e, oth er thincs being equal, two-thirds of the moisture giving material of the atmos phere is gone with it. Ht-nce the long and fearful droughts on lands bare of lrees. Commenting upon the live re viving exhalation from trees, the Natur alist writer says : "What an haimonious adaption of means to an end does nature exhibit here plant life atomizing tons and tons of watery vapor into the surrounding medium, even during time of drought, and this same vajior in turn protecting luxuriant vegetation from evil conse quences of terrestrial radiation. Moist air during winter tends n moderate ex treme cold : during the summer, on the contrary, it tends to cool the draughts ; hence forests by moistening the air in summer give" us cool and delight fill breezes ; another means by which for ests effect extremes of temperature." Fon-sts moisten theairail about them. They create Abundant dews and dews play no small put in forwarding vegeta tion. In the dryest season dew still re freshes the parched earth. Another benefit, and not the least to be consider ed is the good service belts of woodland do in protecting vegetation from storms ami icy winds. It is very common now for enlightened farmers in the west and nortwest to plant dense rows of trees and hedges of evergreen along th north line of their orchards and ground. The fact so far ascertained with certainty, are themselves, without one a 31itio:i;.l word, a sufficient comment on the ruin ous foily that lays the ax.; of destruc tion at the root of our forest trees. They nlso point to ther.eed of immediate forest planting in localities where a suf ficient amount of woodland does not al ready exist. The proper proportion of woodland to the open country is saM to be from twenty five to thirty p,ir cent. How CnEAPLY One Can Live. Bread after all is the cheapest diet one one can live on. and also th; l-st. A story is told that shows just how cheap a man can live when he- pe',3 '-down too much,'" tiifiiralivc iy and literally speak incr. Colonel riiz-.jil.boii w.is many years ago, colonial arrei t at London for the Canadian povernuent, and was wholly dependent, upon remittance from Canada for his supirt. O.i one occa sion these remittances failed to arrive, and as tht-ie was no cable in those days lie was compelled to write to his Cana dian friends to know the reason of tlie delay. Meanwhile he had just one cov ereitrn to live upon. He found that he could live upon sixpence per day, or twelve and a half cents of our money four pennyworths' of bread, one per.ny work of milk and one penny worth of sugar. lie made pudding of some of the bread and sugar, which served for breakfast, dinner and supper, the milk being reserved for the last meal. When his remittance arrived about a month afterward he had five shillings remain ing of his sovereign, and he liked his frugal diet so well that he kept it up for over two y?ars, possibly longer. Tvvelve cents a day is certainly a small amount to expend for food : but a man in Min nesota, about three years ajjo, worried through a whole on tec dollars. He Ii' ed on "johnny cake." "We know of a theological -student in an Ohio who. sustained by grace, rice and corn-tread, lived thirteen weeks on seven dollars ; but there were several good apple orchards near the college, and the farmers kept no dogs. It is not the necessities of life that costs much, but the luxuries ; and it is with the major part of mankind as it was with ! with the Frenchman, wb'i said that if lie had the luxuries of life he could dis pense with the racessities. Mere living is cheap ; but, as the hymnologist says, "it is not all of life to live." American Miller, A Novel Plan. A correspondent from Connecticut to the Manchester Mirror says : When I moved from New York to my small farm, everything was new to the children. It was nway from noise and bustle, and I thought, they would soon get tired of farm life. I purchased a tlock of hens, and as most ot my time was spent away from home, I wanted the childrent to take care of them. They did well for a short time but soon grew weary. The thought Crime to me that I could get them inter- ; ested by giving them part of the profits. U e made a stock company of it. I be cime the President, my wife the Vice President, my son the Treasunr, my daughter tlie Secretary. The I 00k ; was kept in a regular Business foim. The meetings of the company were called to order by the Pit hident and rejtorts sul mitled aud impoitant questions discuss ed, such as "how to break up setting hens," and "would the company bo atjle to pay quarterly dividends." We all became very much interested in our company, and as it was very successful the children purchased all the stock of myself and wife, and ran the company themselves, they taking the whole man agement of the hens, and disposing of the eggs. It occupied their leisure time when not at school, it gave them a start Iota busintai education, ar:d row that the clildien are crown up and away from bonus I look back and feel a satis faction in the little trouble we went to, and the amount of pleasure it conferred ujxm our household. And th's leads v.e to say that it is our duty as pareir.s co make our homes so pleasant thai our children will not went to awv until they start for themselves iu tho battle or life.
