Hon. Joseph Thompson, a brother of the late Major John Thompson, of this place, died yesterday mornino. at his home in the boroush of Indiana. His age was HO years, and he filled the office of Associate Judge for riany years, and was a gentleman wht durii p 1 is long lite commanded the highes respect and esteem of all who knew him. Hen: y O'N'eh'l, formerly of Loretto, and John C. Weathrook, whose home is in Hunt ingdon, found work and lodgings together in Johnstown not loner since, and got along veiy amicably until about three weeks ago, when the latter suddenly disappeared after helping himself to a fine suil of clothes be longing to bis room mate. A warrant was issued and Westhrook was arrested and the clothing recovered at his former home on Thuisdav of last week. He was taken back to Johnstown, and at a preliminary hearing granted him the evidence was so overwhelm ing that he was brought here on Friday ninht and committed for trial at the Decem ber term of Court. A dastardly attempt was made at Eiie, Pa., about 1 o'clock on Thur'day morning of last week, to burn the episcopal residence of lit. Rev. Bishop Mullen, wlio about thirty years ago had pastoral charge of the Catho lic congregations in Johnstown and Wilmore and is well known to most of our older read ers. A lot of pine boards saturated with oil were placed on the front door siil and set on fire, but the sill being of atone nothing worse than tlie almost total destruction of the door resulted. Had the devilish attempt been '. successful not only the house but the pro- 1 cathedral adjoining would no doubt have ; been destroyed. Such Setulishness deserves ! liotl ing short of capital punishment. Wm. C. Ehrenfebit, a younger brother of our clever friend Supervisor Fred. He was re move.! as speed:! v s possible to tie residence of his brother, where a company physician from Altootia nnd Dr. Troxeil of (ia'liitzin, amputated tlie arm at Cue shoulder socket and otherwise cared for the unfortunate yeung man, whose age is only 21 years, and w hose condition is such as to leave but little room for hope as to his ultimate recovery. A correspondent of the Johnstown Democrat says that P. B. Smith, of Minister township, is doip his utmost in the south of the county, and 110 doubt elsewhere, to de feat tiie Democratic ticket this fall. Smith says that he was cheated out of the nomina tion for County Commissioner and is deter mined to have his revenge,' When asked wny be didn't run as an independent candi date, he said there was a better way than that to lie.it the Democrats. This is a P. B. S. for P. B. S. .1 Pretty P.ad Story for Pat rick Bernard Smith, and while we hope it is not true, we are wed satisfied, if true, that it will hii't nobody but Mr. Smith himself, who knows full well that he was credited with every vote he received at the late pri mary ' lection, and that Mr. Hogue was fair ly and honestly nominated. Garvey, partor of the Catholic, congregation at Freeport, Armstrong county, died from a cancerous tumor in the lower part of the left side of his face and neck. About nine months ago the affliction manifested it-self, and it growth was so rapid as to alarm him. He wag treated oy several Pittshnrg physicians, hut owing to the danger which would at tend an operation, none, of them cared to take the responsibility of euttine it out. A nont thp beginning of July last he went to a Philadelpeia hospital, and placed himself in the hands of some of the most pminent surgeons connected with the medical col leges of that city. A partial operation was performed, but finding that the patient could not survive a complete removal of the foreign substance, they were reluctantly compelled to inform him that no snrgicalsklll could save his life, and that he had but a comparative brief space of time to live. On his return to Frepport. the latter part of August, Father Garvey stopped off here over night, eontinning his lonrney home next day. He fully realized that the end was rapidly pearing, and his farewell to such of his friends as met him carried with it a mournful meaning. Gradually the flesh sloughed off from the cancer, until a vital spot was reached, and he was at rest at last. Deceased was born in Irelaud nhnut fiftv four years ago, nnd soon after attaining Ids majority became ordained to the Catholic priesthood. In l.seU he was assigned to the pastorate of the old Catholic church which stood on what is now part of the burying ground in Conemangh borongh. Soon after his arrival he saw the necessity of erecting a new church edifice, and it was nnder his ad ministration the building on the corner of Locust and Jackson steets, as well as the parsonage, were completed. lis remained in charge here until the fall ot 1872. when he was transferred to Brownsville, Allegheny county, and more recently to Freenorf. Two of his brothers are also in the Catholic ministry, we believe in the eastern part of the State. Father Garvey endeared himself lo the people of our town during his resi dence here, and not onlv by the members of his congregation, to whose spiritual wants he so faithfully attended, but also by those of all denominations who formed his ac quaintance, the news of his death will be received with sorrow.
