After navmg heen closed by the snow i thiee weeks, our branch railroad was open- j ed out for purposes of travel and traffic last Friday, the first trip being made, in the I evening. This happy state of things was j due "m the main to a warm rain of forty- i eight hours duration, which, though not nearly removing all the snow, yet eased th cuts of enough of their burden to permit passage to be made by the locomotive. P.egnlar runs have since'been made by the trains, much to the comfort of our people, who had tons and tons of merchandise both to send and receive. What is called a "bliz rard' out West visited lis Saturday and Sunday, but the amount of snow accompany ing it was not sufficient to give trouble. Some of the turnpike and township roads are in bad condition, but none of them are closed. The Prestryterian church edifice of this place has for several years been in a bad etate of repair, and the congregation are di vided as to whether a new one should be built, or the present structure patched up to last for yet a while. " On Monday Mr. Shenk, the contractor for the new Court House, was invited to inspect the church ami give his opinion on the subject. He said substan tially that it would not be economy to at tempt to repair It, for the reason that the upright walls, if released from the support afforded by the roof, (which is worn out,) would in all likelihood fall down and smash everything to Minders. A new building, he added, of nearly the same dimensions, could be built at an approximate cost of ?2,00, and i. is likely this latter idea will bc favor ably considered by the congreg-ttion in due course of time. Death of Mrs. If. A. Roor.s. The many friends of Mrs. Mary Rogers, the estimable wife of Hon. H. A. Roggs, State Senator from this district, have been or will le greatly grieved to learn of the not unexpected death of that ladv, which occurred in Johnstown on Tti"sday last. In 1 8-'?f Mrs. Roggs, then M:ss Mary Stone, aged about 19 years, removed from Philadelphia, where she was lorn. to Hoi idaysburg. there making her home with her uncle, Hon. Geo. K. McFarlane. On the loth of June, !, she was married to Mr. Rotrgs, to whom for nearly forty years, loving and belored, she was a faithful "and devoted wife, as she was for the greater part of that time a fond and affectionate mother. She was a warm friend to the poor, a kind assist ant to the needy, an obliging neighbor to those about her, a constant examplar and guide to a virtnous life, and a safe counsellor to all. ne tender to the bereaved husband, son and two daughters our earnest ympa thics, while of the deceased lady, whom we knew only to esteem from our early boyhood, we can feelingly say, peace to her ashes. t CAfH paid for batter tnd aggs tt Oatman's.
