Dr. James M. it. of Pittsburg, 1:U3 published an article on the eau' ai;sl cure of diphtheria which is attracting wide attention. He declares that the disease is not a result of sewer-gas. lie pays it is local in its first stace, and con stitutional in the next, as a result of ! L'ood poisoning, and recommends treat j ment of a simple and effective kind. So effective is tins treatment that out of forty cases he has lost but one, and that one through the negligence of the pa- j tient s attendants m regard to diet. ; The false membrane to the throat at ! tendant upon the disease can be removed i by local applications. For this a rather J powerful! lotion of hydrochloric acid I and glycerine is recommended. lUit ' the moment the membrane forms the pa i tient is thrtr.tened with another and far i more dangerous malady. 'While this j process is going on iu the tonsils a viru j lent puison is distilled in the neighbor ' hood, a very small portion of which, if I it passes into the stomach, produces '; acute gastritis and thus poisons the Mood. The system becomes much de 1 pressed, the action of the heart and j brain is lowered, ordinarily to the verge j and sometimes to the worst condition of ! paralysis, and the patient dies, not, as j is supposed, from asphyxia, but from the j presence of virulent poison in the blood. After removing the false membrane Dr. Kerr puts into the stomach a simple chemical preparation, containing mag nesia, to combine and neutralize the diphtheretic poisons and gently remove them throuL'h the proner channels. Meantime he supjiorts the patient with : nutrieious, non-irritant food until the crisis arrives, when wine, or, if neces '. fniy, whisky and brandy are copiously j ustd to aid in throwing off the clutch ' that threatens to choke the life cut of j the heart and brain. This of the dis- j ease in us commonest form. -Malignant 1 ' diphtheria is incurable. i j A reporter of the EvjU lias interview- I I ed a number of eminent JJrooklyn physi- i i cians, and is glad to lei;rn that some- j thing like unanimity has at length be- j J gun to prevail as to the main character- j ; istics of tbs disorder. He finds that j ; the sewer-gas theory has been abandon- j : ed. The dangerous pneumonia attend- I ing the disease is attributed to blood j ' poisoning. The system is inoculated by I some specific virus, wiietlier Lacuna or : something else, whose tendency is to I promote putrefaction of the (issues, j they do not profess to know, 'rbe mode ! of treatment, therefore, lias Lrcmne j more nearly uniform. The parts first i and most tangible affected, namely, the throat, fauces and nare, are locally treated, either by external application r by washes laid on with a brush, to destroy the false membrane. How the poison is introduced fiom the throat in to the s stem, if, indeed, it is, there is a, difference of opinion ; but ore of th best authorities intei"iewed. Dr. Chiids, who had great expeiitnce in the matter, gives it as his opinion that Ir. Kfrr has hit upon an accurate solution of the prociss, and that the course of treat ment recommended by him seems very plausible. It differs in essentials in no way from .'"oat suggested by the Uro.ik lyn doctors, namely, to check t lie mem braneous growth with strong antisep tics, to administer antidotes to the poison in the stomach and remove ic naturally, and by tonics and stimulants to fortify the system and ass is- it to throw of? the poison that has already found its way into the circulation. i A P.fivEXiiKFi r, ()wr.. A remark- able instance of intellipcnce showu ty i an ow! in conceiving and eairyin;; out a I pr.-vject of vensc-anc on a farm laborer : ho had tlest roved a whole family of young ones before they had gained" the ! iequisite strength to take wing, is relat , ed by a French provincial journal. An I owl had bui'.t its i.cst iu an old oak trie which srew near tiie farm in the com i mime of i'eauvry. Its mate had laid during the month of July several epgs, I which iu due timo developed into a j promising progeny of young birds. A , farm laborer, moved by a sentimeut of i aversion for owls, which is common in , country pans, determined a few th'.ys i ago to cut short the livts of the young J ones, and, choosing a favorable opportu nity, put hi3 project iu execution. The 1 ituaiit owls were taken awav from the j maternal breast and massacred, Lut by i I what followed it will be seen the parent j ; birds did not allow their tragical fate to j I remain unavenged. On several even . ings succeeding that during which the ; ,' nebt had been piundereiJ,' iLe villagers ! ; returning from the fields remarked the j ' male owl flying in an agitated manner j , round the farm ; but no attention was , paid to the circumstance, which was put ! down to lingering attachment ou the ; ! part of the bird to the spot where tho I nest ha 1 been. The event proved, how - ; : ever, that it haunted the neighborhood ! i of the oak tree from an instinct of re- j 1 venge, and was lying in wait for the de- j . stroyer of its family. During a whole j week it hovered near the farm, biding ; ' its time and at length the right moment t i arrived. The young man who ha-I so ! ...t . : l a I I 1 r i owls was crossinp the thn rhold of the farm at dusk when tiie bereaved bird : S'.vooppti down on him from the tree. At first he sup osed it to lie therat'.ling of a loose blind , or the shaking of a w induw sash in its ; groove : but becoming aunoyed at its cont Hiuance, he walked to the window to secure the noisy frame. Looking out ; into the fat falling snow what was his , surprise to discover, perched on the out side sill, an English sparrow with its , feathers puffed up into a comieal little ; ball to protect it from the wind. Ashe : stood before the window the noise ceas ed, and waiting for its repetition he con c'.hded that the little sparrow had been the cause of his disturbance. Wishing i to see if his eonjietnre w, is correct, he drew back into the shade ot the curtain i .nd watched the shivering bird. In the first report of the Massachusetts Hoard of Health. Vi. Derby s:iys : "As a rnlf, a well receives drainage from a superficial circular area whose diameter is from one to three times the depth of the well, varying with the character of the soil. n this prin ciple, no well thirty feet deepshouhVhave an out-house, pig-pen, barn-yard or cess lool within fifty feet of it it in any direc tion, nor phould any alo'ts of the house or refuse of any kind be thrown en the surface of the ground within the area of the circle. How many farms are there on which this principle is not violated ? It is not a sufficient reply to say that the family have drank fiom ouch wells with impunity for a score or more of years. It must be remembered that when the wells were first dug the water w as pure, but the ground has been gradually im pregnated with foul matter which, it it has not already been jk rmealed to the water, will finally reach and contami nate it. After a fatal case of typhoid fever it will be too late to resort to a crystal spring." l.AMP-SHAi'F.s of ground glass will not ukcolor it washed in soda and water.
