Ti:.r McPikk Having seen an editorial in the Frkkman of J ee.'-24th about the in troduction of a bill in the i'nited States Sen ate fixing the ize of all ballots hereafter to be cast for representatives in Congress nt 4 by 8 inches, it has struck me very forcibly that California could get away with that in the matter of election tickets. In proof ,f this assertion, 1 herewith send you a couple of samples, both which are of regulation size and color. Any other size or color would be rejected by the" courts, and; when presented at 'the polls have to be folded just so that is, four times from the bottom upward. 1 also send 3'ou by this mail a eopv of the "Christmas Illustrated Spirit of the limes, hoping that yon will find something new and interesting in its pages. The stick upon which is rolled may also prove interesting to you. as it is a specimen ot California redwood or ; sequoias. It grows to an enormous height ' and girth. I have seen some ot it, alive and 1 growing, in this county which measured t0. j 4a and even :o feet in circumference, and j from loo to g:H) feet in height. There is one trceof this kind on thecanip-nieetinggrounds ; at ( Juerryvilie, about thirty-six miles from ! this place, that is hollow, and there is an ! opening on one side 14 feet wide and about i :to feet high, in which is a finished room 14 I feet square and 12 high, and another room ' above that, or on the second story, which is i 11 feet square and 10 feet high. The front ; sides of these rooms are, however, on the outside of the tiunk, but only extend sinii ; oiently to square them tip and give them a good "tinish. The tree stands erect and is green and growing. I have seen this myself. The trees are evergreen, and some of them hare been known to produce OoO.OO feet of : dear lumber, besides several thousand shin- gies and a goodly number of railroad ties, fence posts, sicks of curd-wood, etc. ' The red wod is the cheapest and most plen tiful lumber we have, and consequently is the most used for he.use-buihiing purposes, i Foundations, underpinning, frames, weatii i erboarding, outside finish, cornices, roofs, floors, and all inside w ork, txcrpt doors and sash, which are not ail inside, are made of : this redwood timber. It is also used by cabinet-makers in the manufacture of furniture of x!l kind. It is nice lumber to work, can ; lie made very smooth, and will stand a high I polish, it is likewise extensively u-ed for railroad ties, fence posts and pickets. We have other native woods, such as yellow pine, ' sugar pine, cedar, spruce, fir, laurel and al 1 der, which are, however, largely entering into : house-building at th? present time. I The FitK.KUAN continues to come punctu : ally to hand (snow blockades excepted), and is the liveliest country newspapei extant, the puns being especially good. For all which . accept our sincure thanks. I will now close, hoping tha this will find : you and yours as it leaves us in the best of ' health. Till m l:.lE YV -''a Barker - 1. The Great Bargain Room at Oak Hall. There never -was any where before, so far as -we know, such a sale of clothing as is now going on at Oak Hall, taking up the -whole ground floor. A hundred thousand dollars' worth of good clothing, nearly all of it new and fashionable, all of it well made and of good materials without exception (for we make no other) is being sold at prices which bring loss instead cf gain. Clearing sales occur at the close of every season; but they commonly are sales of broken assortments and odd garments, and of small quan tities. Here toward the end of our most successful season we are clearing out what ever, for any cause, has shown signs of being slow. Thousands cf -whole suits and overcoats and odd gar ments as well. Now the sole reason for selling this mass of valuable clothing, without even an at tempt at profit, is that stated above, which may be put into different words, thus : To get our stock into the mo?t at tractive condition, without regard to immediate profit. And so, while this sale is going on, tlie choicest, most approved, most successful, clothing we have is up stairs. The prices there are not re duced at all. This sale will hurt that while it lasts, be cause the clothing in the bargain room is extremely good. For this reason we want it short ; and to make it short, the prices are low. Bring back p'07v.f'Jy what you dent want at the price. You can order by letter, or buy here, according to your own convenience. On receipt of a letter from you, will send the means of tak ing your own measure. Then you can tell us what you want, near enough so that we can take the risk of suit ing you. te -n Wanamaker & Brown, Oax IUi.L.MRrict D.J Sixth. rmiatzu-Bia. :i o' Y.. W.
