Care should be taken that they be not disturbed for at least two ye i'.ra. Is there rot an ordinance on the books forbidding the exuloding of fire-crackers within the borough limits? We ask this question for the reason that on Friday and Saturday evenings last a perfect fusillade of these explosives was kept up till midnight, in one instance a cannon cracker entering the meat market of Mr. Joseph Gutwald. on nigh street, and nearly setting the estao lishment on fire. A good and probably the very !est place for target practice with these crackers would be a mile out of town, i An adjourned meeting of those favora j Me to the construction of a railroad from j F.bensburg to Cherrytree was held in the i Court House on Monday evening last. The . same officers who presided at the preceding j meeting occupied seats on the bench and Prof. Ilarlman Iierg was chosen Secretary, in the absence of Secretary Lake. The committee appointed to collect funds to de fray the expenses of an experimental survey . of the route made verbal report, asking to l le continued. A numlier of letters from civil engineers soliciting the contract of lo cating the line were; reported received. Tho meeting was well attended and quite enthu siastic in the expression of the opinion that the proposed line should be speedily built. Adjoin ned to meet on next Monday evening. Mr. John Shenk, the gentleman who has undertaken to build our new Court House, has contracted with Mr. f iriffitii Criffith, of Cambiia township, for the furnishing of alKiut twelve hnndved perches of stone for the foundation walls ot said sti ucti're, and for which he is to pay fifteen cents per perch and also pay for the hauling of the same. The erection of the foundation walls has been sublet to Mr. F'rank Reinhardt, of Tyrone, who will commence the work w ith out delay. Mr. Shenk has also leaed from Dr. Lenimon five acres of ground in the southwestern pa: t of the lorough for the purposes of a orickyard, and is to pay twen ty cents ier thousand for the clay to be used in the manufacture of about one million of bricks. And so the good work goes bTa veiy on. Mr. Philip P. Miller and Miss Hettie Smith were married at Cheirj iree, on Sun day last, by Rev. Diament, and from thence went to Ctiest Springs on a bridal tour, ac companied by twenty-two of their masculine and feminine friends, and taking with them a;ftne parlor organ and two violins, which wih several fine voices not only made music by the way, but kept it up for most of the time during their two days sojourn at Chest Spiings. Mr. Miller is the gentleman who in gratiated himself inti the f,oc.d graces of a cer tain gang of thieves who were better known than appreciated and about the classic pre cincts of Rugtown, in Susquehanna town ship, and finally brought them to justice in 1N77-H, while the hi id", who is a daughter of Mr. RolteitSmith, of Patcb'nvi'ie, Cleai field counly, is said to be a veiy estimable young lady. May the music and lii'i'tli which wel comed their bridal tour be the harbingers of a long and happy l;fe to each of them. Two men named Ilcniv Xagle and James McMeMen bad a desperate set-to at Chest Springs on last Monday afternoon, which resulted in the complete demoraliza tion of the pany of the first paii, whose face was battered out of all shape, and whose libs no doubt ached with the severe contus ions they received. P.y common consent our national holiday was celebrated here, though in a somewhat i infoimal manner, on Saturday last, instead of the following Monday, which by law is the declared legal holiday, when banking and similar lines of business must lie tern- , porarily abandoned. It was a happy chance, ; too, that our choice fell on the first-mention- j ed day. for it was cool and pleasant through out : whereas rain fell almost incessantly all , of Monday, thereby spoiling many brilliant calculations for celebrations in other locali ties. Three several Sunday-school picnics came off here. For the J eighth time since its organization the Penn sylvania Editorial Association, as an Asso ' ciation, has just leen placed under renewed i obligations to the Pennsylvania Railroad j Company and its able, efficient and obliging management, notable among whom is Mr. ! Ii. P. Farmer, Ceneral Passenger and Tick- et Agent, Philadelphia, for the courtesy of a I long, pleasant and enjoyable ride over said roatl and other lines controlled and operated by the same company, i This time the jaunt was to Watkins" den, ' Seneca Lake, Penn Van. Kenka Lake, and i Hammondsport, all of which mav be found on the map of New York State, ami the j greater part of last week was occupied in j making the excursion, in which about two 1 hundred and sixty persons of both sexes j and nearly all sizes indulged. From the various points of the compass came the edi ; tors and their wives, sweethearts, children, ' etc., the entire party concentrating at Wil- liamsport, which city most of the number reached, by way of Harrisburg, on Monday evening. Others, however, leing more dila tory in their movements, did not get to Wil liamsport until Tuesday morning, among the latter of whom onrself, wife ami an Al- ! toona friend who accompanied us are to lie numbered. Nevertheless, we got there in ' good time, and hat' the gratification of meet 1 fngourvoung tow.isman, R. II. Thompson, ; whom we found as busy as a bee in receiving ami tlirecting the excursionists as to the way ; they should go to reach the dining room of tlie Parke House, one of the finest hotels in the I'nited States, and certainly none the less deserving of its good name because onr ' friend Rob beloncs to its clerical force. After indulging in a good breakfast, the , assembled multitude was marshalled by Mr. R. S. Menamin, Secretary ami Treasurer of the Association, to whose efficiency, good i judgment and untiling energy the pleasures I of this as of all preceding excursions were J eminently due. The multitude, as we have . saiil. was" marshalled by Mr. Menamin, uti i der whose direction the, excutsionists were 1 soon comfoi tablv seated in a special train, kindly furnished by the P. R. R. Co.. ami i steaming away in the direction of Watkins' Clen, which place was reached, after passing : through the beautiful city of Elmira anil other points of intt vst, oe'tween 1 and 2 o' : clock Tuesday afternoon. Here a portion i of the party was quartered at the Clen Mountain House, which occupies an elevated i position about one mile above the mouth of i the clen, where it commands a gorge-ons I view of the depths beneath, while the others j were assigned to the i!en Park House, j which is located near the foot of the glen, i ami is said by those who had the pleasure of enjojing its hospitality to he one of the best ' conducted, fs it certainly is one of the lnre est and most beautifully embowered hotels , to be fount! anywhere. As for onrself and party, we were consigned tothe Clen Moun ! tain House, where we received the best of ' treatment and enjoyed its wild and pictnr i esque surroundings to our heait's content, : albeit the effort to reach the house by a one , horse conveyance up an exceedingly steep acclivity was so far fiom being a success ! that when the vehicle began to progress backward, which it did lief ore half the dis- tance had been attained, the occupants of the cairiage got out of conceit with the out look and tnen got out on the dusty road and , footed it the balance of the way. A general washing and biushinff up was ; followed by cood dinners at both the hotels above nameci, after which nearly all the ex cursionists proceeded to view the glen anil inteiview its wondciful gorges, oeaut'Cui : wateii'aMs, massive masoniy reared by na j tine's own hand, deep pools of civstal water, . shaped anil foimed by the action of the ele ' nieiits, anil many other strange and almost ' unaccountable formations with which the ; glen 'abounds. Of this gorge-ons freak of ; nature ami its wild ami picturesque attrac i tions w e shall attempt no special description, I knowing fed well that an thing we could ' say wou'd give but a faint idea of the glen ami its grandeur, which to be appreciated must be visited ami thoroughly explored. i Suffice it to say that the glen is several i miles in length, and that scarcely a foot of . the entire route is without some distinguish i iug and attractive feature of its own. Following in the wake of a somewhat wearisome ramble through the glen came a ; sleep which, so far as we were concerned, i hadn't the least bit of wake in it until bright ; and early next, morning, when the entire j parly awakened to the fact that a delightful excursion to I'enn Van and a steamboat ride on Lake Kenka from thence to llamnionds j poll was to be the great event of a day ; which foiiu oately proved exceedingly pro ; pitious. The train bearing tin-excursionists ! to Penn Van left Watkins at x.40 a. m., Wed , iiestlay, and reached its destination about 11 j o'clock, where the steamer Yates awaitetl our coming and soon had the entire patty on board ; after which it steamed out into Lake ; Kenka and headed for Hammondsport, -2 i miles from Penr. Van. On the wr.y up, . however, ami when wiiboi about five miles of Hanimnndsport. the steamer stopped at i tin: whaif of t.ie IVnana Wine Co., whose i immense vaults and extensive manufactory i was, by invitation of the courteous superin i tendent, Col. Swiizer, visited by tin; entire party. Nor ws that rll, for the clever su perintendent afoiesaid "set it up" hand somely on the excursionists, and while the champagne, catavvba and pott wines, all of which were pronounced by competent judges to be first class in eveiy respect, were being quaffed with a relish iiy those of the paity who appreciate such spiritual i oufoi ts, even tein iterance people vere no doubt prone to ask themselves, ' It'.'nc not indulge in a lit tle for fashion's sake, if not for the stomach's ache?" Anil indulge they may have done, for aught we know to tiie contraiy. Of that, however, we have no record, though we do know to a certain! v that there was more wining than whining indulged in on that in teresting occasion. W hen the pa iiy once more embarked on board the steamer, it was veiy desirably if not largclv increased bvthe welcome presence of Co.. Switzer and .ady, who accompanied the excursionists to Ham mondspoit and from thence returned by the same boat to their place of embarkation. - At llammondspoit, which is at the head of Lake Kenka, sumptuous repast,, more, tie serving tif the name of a fea.;t tiian a lunch, so called, was served up at the Kairehihl House to us hungiy mortals at 7." cents per head which wasn't a bad price for what really deserved t be railed an excellent meal. After lunch ami various interviews with, a number of the leading citizens of the town, the burthen of whose song for the most part was set to Hancock music, the steamer once more cleft the deep, and at about li l'. m. the cxwsionisfs stepped from the boat at Penn Van, where thev were met by a large crowd of people, as well as by an excellent silver cornet band, neatly u to fin til ed and under the leadership of Mr. Ceo. Hyatt This band heeled the procession as it marched from tiie boat lauding to the rail road depo which are fully half a mile apait, and continued to discourse sweet music, at intervals until the train steamed awav from the depot on its return trip to Watkins, which latter place was reached in time for a somewhat belated supper. The rest of tiie evening and a giwxl portion of the night was made melodious by the choicest of music from a splendid silver cornet band an organization of which the village of Wat- 1 kins may well feel promt Then came sweet j slumbers anil pleasant dreams, such as only easy consciences, peculiar to the craft, can I fully insure. J Oil Thursday morning we in common w ith a goodly numlter of the excursionists paid a I visit to Havana Clen, three miltrs from Wat i kins, which we reached oy carriage, although i the village of Havana, hear the foot of the j glen, is on the line of the Northern Central ; Rail Road, and is a hamlet of much more than ordinary pretensions as well as lieauty. I What we found to excite our wonder ami ad 1 miration in Havana lien it would not be pos I sible in this brief ami hastily-written sketch to fully describe, thourrh it is but simple jus t tice to say thpt while it is probably not much more than one-third the length of Watkins' ! Clen. it need not take a back seat in the mat i ter of gorge-ons depths, perpendicular bights, j beautiful waterfalls, romantic acclivities, se ' eluded nooks, crystal ptxils, shimmering cas ; cades, tortuous paths, rustic bridges,, wind j ing staircases, ami all that sort of thing. In I fact, to visit that wonderful region ami not i take a stroll through Havana Clen and feast I your eyes on such magnificent woiks of na ' tore as" Eagle Clif Falls, Council Chamber, ; Curtaiii Cascade, Ihitlal Veil, Whispering i Falls, Echo Falls, Fairy Cascade, Ac, is to ; miss a ran? treat which no lover of nature j can fail to appro-inte. notwithstanding the climb-ate is exceedingly rugged. A fining t he many who visited Havana l lien on this meni I oral lie occasion was Rev. C. C. McLean, pas : tor of Iielmont M. E. church, Philadelphia, ! and editor of the Ctrifin Wnrl-rr. He was 1 accompanied by his young and amiable wife, to whom it came near proving a fatal jour ! ney, inasmuch as she made a misstep after i having ascentb'd to within a short distance of the ton of what is known as "Jacob's Lad der." a long and almost perpendicular flight of wooden steos, and hnd it not leen for I he presence of nitnd or her husband, who was immediately behind her at the trine, and who threw hims-'elf down in such a position as to stop her progress, she would in all probabil ity have been dashed on the rocks beneath, and in that event nothing short of a miracle could have saved her from a horrible death. 1 his thrilling incident, which with the excep tion of an accident which lefel the excellent wife of our friend Speddy, of the Port Royal Timrs, who was struck on the ba-k ami quit? painfully injured by a small box which (ell noma ptiamidof boxes at the l'rbna Wine ( oiiipitny b ( suUijiiiiieiit, was the only one, so far as we are aware, which occurred to cast even a momentary shadow across the pleasant pathway of the editorial excursion ists. For the facts connected with Mrs. Mc Lean's narrow escape from death we are in debted to the overjoyed couple, with whom we spent a very pleasant hour on the way back to F'.lniira, where they chanced cars for Niagara Falls. From Havana Clen most of the excursionits returned in time to enjoy a very pleasant ride of a couple of hours' du ration on Lake Seneca, for which delightful trio those who participated, anil we were not of ;the number, are under special obligations j to .i. D. Payne, Esq., Superintendent of the ; Seneca Lake Steam Navigation Company, ( who very kindly and considerately detailed one of the largest, handsomest ant! staunch- j est boats of the line for that duty. At 3 o'clock Thursday afternoon the jour- nalistic jaunterssat down with their lady ami gentlemen friends, among whom were a nuin- I her of invited guests, to a sumptuous ban- ; quet at the Clen Mountain House, and it is j needless to say that of all the gorge? in all the glens there was no gorge so overpower- i ingly gorge-ons as the universal gorge which j was plainly visible on that occasion. After ; this really royal feast was ended the How of i soul begin with a neat ami Iteconiing speech j from the President of the Association, Clay ton McMichael, Esq., of the Plnlad'a Xor'th 1 Amirrirfin. who was followed in a very humor- ' ous and happy strain by Hrother Kennedy, ! of the Pottsville Chronicle. Several other i toasts were also dra no, announced and i respontletl to in a manner equally felicitous ' by those to whom the tasks were assigned. ' but as we were anxious to turn ourface home ward ere the shades of night hail enveloped the earth, we didn't wait to hear it out. We j are confident, however, that all the speakers I aetpiitted themselves creditably, though we ! couldn't help agreeing with D" M. Zimmer- i man, Fsq., Secretary and Treasurer of the j Camden and Atlantic City Rail Road, who i was one of the excursionists, and is, bv the ! wav, as pleasant a gentleman as we have ever met, ami who remarked upon rejoining us at the railroad station, whither he hastened just in time to escape responding to the toast, "The Railroads of Our Count 1 v." for which. he was down on the bills, that it was a mis- j take to assign to a resident of the place, Mr. Fred. Davis, Jr., the duty of responding to the toast. "Watkins," for as Mr. 'A. quite in- j ntcentiv, though veiy pun-cently, obsei ved, I "Watkin(s) a man say laudatoiy of his own town ?" I Leaving Watkins at f, o'clock, o. ni., by ! local express, we reached Elmira m time to take a somewhat extended stroll through that beautiful and progressive city of 20,immi ; inhabitants before the ai rival at !."o of the , regular thiough train, on board of which we I scudded away to Hairisburg, where we ar- ' lived in time to take the Pacific Express west, i which landed us In Altoona at S.i o'clock ! Friday morning. Antl thus, to aM intents and purposes, ended onr participation in the ' ei-dith annunl excursion ol the Pennsylvania , Et.itorial Association, which for unalloyed . enjovment and pleasant experiences must be nunioered among the most delightful and ! certainly the most successful trips of the kind ; ever ind'u'.ged in by the members of that or- ganization for all which Mr. Menamin is in j a special manner deseivingof the lienedic- tions of all concerned. To others inside and ' outside of the Association due meed of praise I should also be given, antl hence on behalf ' of the latter we take pleasure in aj'pendnig I the following i RF.riUtT OF THE COMMITTEE ON liKSOLL- i TIONS OK THANKS, Dr. Win.
