The wife of Mr. Jacob Carman, of Siis- ijuebanna township, whose mind hasbeeoine sadlv impaired, was taken through this place on Thursday evening last tn r'.ii.v for the Insane Asylum near Harrisburg. Wnat makes the case of this po ir woman the more distressing is that she has a son in the same institution, whither ha was taken for treat ment several months ago, and where he still remains without any apparent change for the better in his condition. ' St. John's Literary Society of Altoona took occasion Ion the eve, (Wednesday eve of last week) tf disbanding for the summer season, to present, to Lev. Father Sheedy, ' the eloquent, zealous and kind-hearted curate of St. John's church, a handsome gold-headed ebony cane as a token of esteem. The pre j sentation speech was made by our typo graphical friend, Frank C. MeCullough, and replied to In fitting terms by the very worthy and greatly surprised recipient. Due Cibson Barr declares that he saw and measured the snake, and is pre pared to make an attidavlt on the subject, pio.ided, of couise, anybody disputes his word. Hawker and McDade, two prisoners in our Vounty jail, wen- sent to the northern outskirts of town, Wednesday afternoon, to cut sod, but soon tiring of tho business. Con cluded to cut stick instead of sod, which they did so successfully that at the time or going to presstliey had not been captured, although several parties were, in pursuit o,them. Hawker was sentenced at September court to an imprisonment of one year, less one day, for assault arid battery, and we believe Mc Dado was in. but . no'V out. for a similar offence. than six shots after her while she was seek ing safety in flight. The Altoona Ecenirxg Ca'.l is at present regaling its readers w ith "Incidents of the War," w ritten expressly for its columns, and very interesting and instructive sketches. The Cull, by the way, is a very fairly con ducted journal, and is disposed in every in stance to do equal and exact justice to all men, regardless of race, creed or condition. Besides that, it has a job department equal to any in Central Pennsylvania, and turns out work which is an honor to the taste and bkill of Mr. Haines and his excellent work men. Twenty dollars anil fifty cents is the total amount due us from three parties who have recently pulled up stakes and left Northern Cambria, w ithout informing us of their intentions or betraj ing any sign what ever of that inward consciousness which in duces honest men to either pay their debts or give some reasonable excuse for delaying the day of settlement. No wonder that we are frequently tempted to lose all faith in human nature and publish to the world the ns.mes of those who defraud us of our hard earned wages. C. C. Mateer, of Altoona, was found guilty in the Blair county Court, on Friday last, of obtaining goods under false pretense, wilh a recommendation to mercy, but a motion was made for a new trial, which Judge Dean ordered to be placed on the argument list. Mr. Mateer Is said to be somewhat of an adeot in "ways that are dark ami tricks that are vain," but it is nevertheless to be hoped that his experience in this case, however it may result, will aid Mateer iaily in inducing him to forsake the paths that lead to destruction, or words to that effect. Mr. Henry Harbison, a venerable and well known citizen of Woodbury township (near Williamsburc), Biair county, died on Thursday morning of last week, aged about 7 years, and was buried in the Catholic cemetery at Wiiliamsburg on Saturday morn- : ing. The funeral services were conducted ; by Lev. John Ward, assistant pastor of the Newry congregation and son of Mr. Martin Ward, of this place. Deceased was an hon est man, "the noblest work of Cod," a kind I husband and father, a good neighbor, an es - teemed citizen and an exemplary Christian- ; : May he rest in peace. Two dwelling houses and a store-room in Huntingdon wem destroyed on Tuesday night of last week by fire, communicated, it : is supposed, from the oven of Mr. John J. Crawford, a baker who occupied one of the buildings. A while Leghorn hen which was hatching under the oven 'it the time is credit ed with sticking to her post of duty until she was roasted to death. Next morning each of the eggs was found to contain a fully devtloijed chick, which goes to show that there is either no truth in tho theory that a Leghorn hen don't hatch, or else that the i lire did the hatching for her. It was understood not many days ago that Postmaster James w as to resume control of the Herald aud that his bl othol'-in-law , Mr. Fes. Lloyd, the present editor, was to step down and out. Since then, however, it seems that by virtue of a new deal Mr. James has ceased to possess any interest iu said paper, and Mr. Lljyd by right of pur chase becomes its sole proprietor and editor. Ail which prompts us to wish to the latter gentleman a long and successful career in the publication of a journal which has noth ' ing it ne"d be ashamed of except its politics, and on that score we presume it would be folly to expect any improvement. A l.cn owned by Mr. Michael Thomas, ; of Munstir township, performed tin; extra ordinary feat on Saturday last of hatching out one of her numerous brood a little cluck with four perfectly formed legs, two of which occupy the position it. variably assigned to the pedal extremities of such bipeds, while the extra pair extend from the root of the tail and are of the same length and equipped with the same nuiiibi r of to.-s as the other two, This wonderful little "peep" is as lively and seems to have just as fair, or rather fowl, prospects before it, as any of the brood, but whether it uses all four of its limbs in g. tting over ground is more than we have learned. Mr. J. H. Fulmer, formerly of Fbens burg, now of Oil City, a true friend, by th? way, of the FltEF.M.vs, inasmuch as he takes the. paper r.nd pas for it promptly, spent Sunday and Monday among his friends in this vicinity, and left Tuesday morning en route for the Hot pii: gs of Arkai.sas, wl.iihi r he govs i:i hopes of rcceivin ; early and permanent relief from a severe attack of rheumatism, t which for a considerable time past his feet ami shoulders have been t.r a f..7 iliv-s of his conhnemeni ne was locked in one further down the corridor. Staying indoors, however, he added, was wearing on one's constitution, j particularly as this is the sea-on a person , ought to be out fishing or playing base hall, j Four letters, he said, lie had written to par- ; ties in Johnstown and elsewhere with refer- , ence to nrocuiing counsel for his defense, ; but so far no answer bad reached him. If his ( friends, or any of them, received these letters, , thev should take oction in the matter as soon 1 as possible. With regard to the. shooting, Mr. Burke pursued that degree of reticence j which is characteristic of all alleged crimi- . mils, though he stmitlv persisted in saving! that Voir, and the other Swedes wore at the time under the influence of intoxicating ; drink, while he himself was duly sober. These and other facts, he declared, wiM no- . pear on the tiial. "It ischarged on me," lie added, "that I have it in contemplation to , attempt to break jail. Nothing is further j from n:v thoughts; else, why should I have. , given nivself up in Pittsburgh, where all op- ! poltur-ities for escape were aiTorded me?" All in all. Burke presents the appearance of a young man eighteen years of age who . bears uoon himself no impress of criminal : recklessness or vicious habits which are the ; custmnarv characteristic of a bad boy. All who know Casper W. Ensly, t!i ge nial and efficient local editor of the Johns town Daily Tribune, who, by the way, always spells his first name with two "a's," will be sorry to learn that he had a very profuse hemorrhage cf the lungs on last Thursday afternoon, while standing on the pavement ir. front of Mr. David Creed's grocery store. So severe was the attack that it was found necessary to put luni to bed in Mr. Creed's residence, whore he was forced to remain for day or two before lie recovered strength enough to return home. Casper has rhad fjnite a number of such unpleasant experi ences during the last few years, but as he seems determined never to say die, it will urpiise no one to learn that hp was able to be on the streets auain for a snorl time on Tuesday last. We sincere' hope that Lis old enemy will now give up the contest in despair.
