At j Uras, which ha3 an elevation of ten ! thousand ferr, Mr. !,kkker estimated j 1 he snowfall, from the native account, ; as having been from thirty to fort feet thick. If the reply to this query should be. as Is quite likely, that some old-time inventive ger.ltts was the man, it wilt be incorrect. The dnte of the invention and the founding of paper making is not definitely known., 'Die com mon wasp was, however, the inventor. The big wasp's nest, which was always kept at a safe distance, and often knocked down with a stone during the rambles of boyhood, was composed of actual paper of the most delicate and elegant kind. As spiders were spinners of gossamer webs of intricate and exquisite patern when men went about dressed in the shaggy skins of beasts, and could neither spin nor weave the lieautifui and fine cloth fabrics of to-day, so little wasps, when peo ple of the later and somewhat more advanced age had recourse to such rude and unsatis factory substance as wood, stone and brass, the bark of trees, and the hides of animals, on which to preserve memoranda, were making a material of far greater excellence They made their paper, too, by very nearly the same process employed by man at the present time. Indeed, several of our best j discoveries in regard to building, architec- j tare, and manufactures of various kinds, if , they have not beeu derived from acute o!- j nervation of the work of certain animals, in eluding insects, have, when compared with " ,zv neighboring- mountains, more or loss, j the I hue had fallen, while at GuI- j anarr and ononmrg. whfre no attempt ! was made to remove the snow, almost j all the lui's of the Kiiropean visitors j were utt-ii brok'. a down by ir. Nature is a great teacher, and especially j docs the papermaking of the wasp illustrate j how valuably suggestive she may sometimes I be ; for, assuredly, the wasp was the first to ! show that it did not always require rags to ' manufacture paper, that vegetable fibers an- j swered for this purpose and could be reduced I to a pulp, and that to make the paper strong j and tenacious, the fibers must be long. j The first thing the wasps do, when about i to build a nest, is to collect, "with preference I for old and dry wood fibers, alout one-tenth turn any amount ; f an inc), on;r niut nn,.r than a hair, and put them into bundles, which they increase ; as they continue on their way. Harper's place, we have learned that its history is even more in teresting than we suspected. The man w ho made it his place of refuge was named Chas. Colston, and was an uncle, and not grand father, of Harry Colston. He was the grand father of Abe Perry, the trainer, and also of Luke lllackburn, the Versailles bnrt.er, and was, at that time, nearly t0 years apo, the cania-e driver of Lord Robert Alexander, Sr. Taking offense at something, he inform ed the house jrirl that he intended to drive uie carriajre over a rreeiuict mm kill ni he reported what had been Pinn ated to her. and Charles was sold to a Southern trader, as stated. He was shipped ; South, where he picked cotton half day, ' and knocked bus overseer in the head with a hoe. Kscaping, immediately, he made his way to Kentucky and to..k refuge in the. tree referred to, where he lived seven years before his hiding-place became known. He was taken to the Versailles jail after being captured, where he was confined for some . time. He was afterward bought by Mr. j Miles, who then owned the narper place, . and at a later date was sent South again, since which nothing has been heard of him Ft'NNT Nkt of a Hat. On the farm of j M.tnorless, in the district of Kirkcaldy, in t Fifeshire, and in the house of Mr. Alexander .' Cihson, a large and very tempting ham hung from nne of the rafters running across ti.e i ceiling. In the same liottce there was a rat , whose taste lay strongly in the direction of the ham, and this rat with rare instinct gnawed a hole in the wtwM-work directly I over the tempting morsel, and, dot-ending, ' ate itself into the inside of it. How long the excavating went on is not known, but one day the housewife found it necessary to commence operations on the porkdionse of : the rat, when, on lifting it down, nut bolted I the depredator, and betook itself up through Its hnle above in a great hurry. The bam was a perfect shell, skin and bone only re maining to show its form. The animal, after fee ling sumptuously, had commenced to l.nild a nest insidn. T. X., in iMnd and tea r HOP BITTERS. It is a common practice anions some dairy-men to Kive their cows, j while dry, scanty living. When a cow ceases ; to pivc milk or is dried up, any food is con- ' sidercd rjood enough for her. I think this is i a preat mistake, and the result is diminished : product of milk, both in rpiantity and quality, when she does eomc in. There is a lan;c draught on the system to sustain the calf while the cow is carrying it, and to keep the cow in good condition ijnod feed is as im portnnt as when she is giving milk. It is my o inion that one dollar's worth of food when the cow is dry is worth one dollar and adialf's worth after she comes in. An animal in poor condition cannot digest as much food as an animal in good Condition. If the cow is poor when she comes in she will not digct enough food to support the system and at the same time to make a large quantity of milk. Jrrtexj Dultetin. 1 i. O.
