IIow to secure egsrijinnnp the win ter season is atrain the anxious query of young anl inexneriencetl inmltry grow ers. It is estimated that 43, (.HX),000 doz en eptrs are consumed daily in the Uni ted States, New York alone appropriat ing 40,000,000 dozens annually. Such figures as these nal orally incline every body owning iioultry yards to consider the "way and menus by which tlie gieat est number of effs shall le Rain ed. The production of ess-s durintj cold weather is largely under the control of tlie one who has charge of the fowls. Jlens supplied with warm and comfoit Sifcie qunrters and an abundance of suit able food as a rule reward the owner with a bountiful supply of eggs. In connection with liberal care should lis ob served the ages of fowls. Geyebn and other scientists who have looked into the matter state, and Prof. Miles quotes tlje following proportion as applicable to the average of poultry: ''First year af ter hatching. 15 to IX) eggs : .second year PHJ to third year, 120 to 1:55; and the four! h year after hatching loo to 115 eggs, after which there is a visible de crease, the fifth year U-iiig accorded on ly 00 to f-'d eggs. Fowls require a variety of food. Corn ftfd alone tends to the production of fats, iiot the production of eggs. Wright, in lils book of iHfultry, places finely ground oats, thoroughly moistened, but not made into a slop, at the head of the lisl as the standard food for poultry. He furthermore recommends the mixing of all soft food, with Imiling water and feeding of it while it yet is warm. Of the whole grains he gives buckwheat the preference, and next to this he advises fresh barley. Laying hens should also have a liberal supply in the way of vege tables and any green food obtainable. Scraps of meat chopxd line and mixed with bits of fo wl may be further varied by using wheat screenings or middlings and shorts mixed and wet with water. Burnt bones or oyster shells or bits of pounded lime, morUr and gravel must be regularly furnished. These substan ces prevent the occcurance of soft-shelled eggs and are relished by the hens. A box of dry ashes placed where it is al ways accessible insures freedom from vermin. In climates where the weather is mild and the hens are allowed to run at large they are not cut off from their usual suppliesand will genf rally lay well with out any special aid, but the directions given are very necessary elsewhere. At all times and under all circum.-tances plentv of t itan water should be provid ed. To present the matter in a nutshell, furnish suitable accommodations, ob tain and keep excellent breeds, feed as great a variety of diet as jnissible, ami feed them as much as they will eat a hongry hen will not be a laying hen. In very cold weather add a little cayenne pepper to the morning ration, which should be made neither too wet nor giv en too hot. Supply plenty of water and observe regularity in feeding and also in gathering the eggs. AX AsTItONOMK AT. F.Vf t. Two jior sofis were born at the same plac-c, at the same moment of time. After an age of fifty years they both. di"d, also at the same place and at the same moment, ye t one had lived one hundred days more than the other. IIow was this-jiossibleV Not to keep our friends in suspense, the solution runs upon a curious, but with a little rt fleet i in a very obvious point in circtimnavig.-it ion. A jn-ison going around the world towards the west loses a day. and towards the east he gains one. Supposing, then, two p rsons born to gethei at the Cap1 ot (rood Ilooe, hence a voyarre around l he world may lnt per formed in one year; if one jierforui this rt listanllv towards the west, in fifty yi a: s he will be fifty days behind the stationary inhabitants, and it' the other , sail equally toward tie- west, ii fifty, yeorshe will be as many days in ad vancu ' i ' tht-iii. This social instinct is most ex emplified among the insect tribes, as for instance the be,, and the wasp. The structures, lesuhing from th co-opera- i tion of multitudes of little lalmrr-rs guided by this instinct, ar- very inter esting. These insects make their build ins material from 1 he fibres of old wood. These they convert by mastication into pulp, which, made into a thin lav. r, 1k comes firm like paper. It is indeed a process very much like the common pro cess of paper-making, invented by man. and the first rude inventor mnv have got his idea from t!w insect. With this substance the wasps build sev.ral ranees of cells, which are hexagonal, like the cells in the comb of the bee. Pti MAitKAi'.t.M Piece ok Wcxme Mr. Thomas P. Crosby obtained what he considers quite a curiosity in cuttinrr clown a tree on the premisesof Mr. Pete r I.. Kgolf, in Pottstown. The tree was a silver maple, about a foot anil a half in diameter above the rKtiud. and from the centre of its trunk was obtained a stick about H feet in length and an inc h in diameter, looking just as the tree tli.l when it was quite small, many years ago, with knots on it showing "jilainlv th- mark made by the kniTe of the owner in trimming. It seemed exactly as if this stick, branch, or lie-art of the tree had stopped growing at a certain time, that a new tree had grown around it. leaving the original sapling standing loose in the centra f its wood. All who have examined the stick ami the knife marks where it was trimmed tuo liouncr it a wonderful growtli indeed. - Kkepixo Appt.ks.a correspondent of the Hcral Acre Yorker writes that he has tested the method suggested in ag ricultural papers or keeping apples all . the year round by wrapping them in pap r for tyvo successive years, and linds : it to l.o a lierficl success.- The plan !! was to take old newspapers, eut them into piece s of sutlicient si.e, and wrap each apple- by itself and pack them ; carefully in boxes eir barrels, so as to ex clude the air. I no tice no many enquiries from correspond ents in relation., to steamers and food cookers that I am induced to give them how to make a cheap one, which I think will be found equal in economy and dur ability to many a more pretentious one. (ret your carpenter to make a tank or vat of good sound pine plank, rising lumlter-one foot wide, and of such dim ensions as to hold from one to two bar rels of water ; on tlie bottom of this nail heavy galvanized iron and for economy of fuel have the tinner solder six inch pile up through this about, one foot from the rear end, and extending up some what higher than the water will come when it is tilled : from this extend com mon stove pipe to any height you choose. When this is completed set it on the top of bric k or stone work laid in mor tar, forming a lire box the whole length of the tank. Your smoke stack is al ready completed in the pipe running through the liottotn. Some two feet from the front end of the fire liox I would build a bridge eoming nearly up to the Ijoltoni of the tank, so as to con fine the flames nearer to the heating surface, and do not make the fire box too high, for much of the heat is lost in this way, (from fourteen to sixteen in ches is sutheient for height.) For con venience in drawing off the hot water put in a good sized faucet near the bot tom on one side or back end. A barnl half full of meal tilled up with boiling water and covered tightly for six or eight hours will Ik? found on oenirig again to lie cooked sufficient for all pur poses of feeding. The w hole cost of a boiler of this kind need not exceed five dollars, can lie built out of doors or in one corner of the hog house witn no more danger than an ordinary stove, ami from the large amount of heating surface exjiosed to the fire, only a small amount of wood is required. I have had one of this kind in use for a number of years and would not exchange it for some of the patent steamers which have been so short liv ed in this section. The one I have is my own make and original with me, and I give my experience to others who may wish to try something without a patent attached to it. HVs'fru llural. J'KI KC T OF KKKI'IXO Fl.OtTK Ix 1$AK- iu:i.s. As is well known, llonr kept in barrels for along lime often acquires a peculiar odor, supposed to lie derived from the barrel, l'oleck, of Silesia, has lately made a careful examination of such Hour, and has ascertained that this smell actually indicates an incipient de composition prejudicial to good bread making, the gluten of the (lour having in part liecame changed into a soluble body. Thus, while sound flour pres erved in sacks contained 11 ' jxt cent, of gluten and 1 41 per cent of soluble al buminous matter, fout other specimens of llour t.ken from different barrels were severally composed of 8 37 jer cent, gluten to 2 14 per cent, soluble al bumen ; 7 40 pei cent, to G f0 ier cent. 7 2.'5 per cent, to 4 44 per cent, and 6 54 per cent, to 0 4i pc r cent. Two samples with more than 0 per cent of soluble matter had an acid reaction, while the others are neutral. I'rof. Poleck be lieves this ch'-mical change of the flour to be induced by the fact that the bar rel prevents communication with the atmospheric air and the equalization of temperature. Tios view is confirmed by tho oft repeated observation that fl ur kept in sacks keeps fresh for a niueh longer time, and that the inustiness in barrels always develops first and exists in the highest decree in the f;etittr, viz., that portion most remote from the out er air. 39 GODfill Si HUP ! 10 YEARS BEFORE THE PUBLIC Pronounced by a'l to be the most n.i-"..s-ant and rrt i ac lot s remedy miw in use for the (nit ok coiohs, comis, cnorr, hoar-cness, tickhni; sensation of the throat, whoojiiii!; eolith, etc. OvKi! amii.mhn hot TI.F.S :ol 1 WITHIN TU K I.At-T FEW YEAHS. "This Sarsaparilla is. 1 combination of vegetable alteratives St illingia.Man drake.Yellow Dock with the Iodides of Potassium and Iron, and is the most efficacious medicine yet known for the diseases it is intentfed to cure. Its ingredients are eo tkilfully combined that the full alterative effect of each is assured, and while it is so mild as to be harmless even to children, it is still fo effectual as to purge out from the system those impurities and corruptions which develop into loathsome disease. The reputation it enjoys is derived from its cures, and tlie confidence which prominent physicians all over the country repose in it proves their experience of its usefulness. Certificates attesting its virtues have accumulated, and are con stantly being received, and as many of these caes are publicly known, they furnish convincing evidence of the superiority of this Sarsaparilla over every other alterative medicine. So generally is its superiority to any other medicine known that we need do no more than to assure the public that the best qualities it has ever possessed are strictly maintained. PREPARED BY Dr. J.
