Dr. II. How, of Altoona. delivered his lecture on "The Science of Health" in the Court House last Friday evening. It was a most able and instructive effort, but owing to inclemency of the weather the attendance was not 4 large as was desired. The lec ture will doubtless be repeated at some not far distant 4lay. Mr. Alvar Akers, of Johnstown, stepped through an open trap door in his meat mar ket on Tuesday evening last, and was thrown down a pair of steps to the cellar floor, a dis tance of alMut seven feet. He was rendered uncoiwinus for several moments afterward. An examination of his injuries showed that he was not badly hurt. The Altoona papers inform us that in a week or ten days from late, a daily after noon paper w ill' Im issued by the Sun of that city, with .Mr. William P. Furey as editor. That will makt: three dailies for Altoona. We trust thi-y al! may succeed in coming out of the large end of the horn, but at this dis tance it liM.ks a little mixed. A 4leed was sent to the Recorder's ollice. front Johnstown the other day. for record, which was so fearful aud wonderful a spec imen of inelegant chirography that Mr. Lake, though an expert in deciphering Kgyplian hieroglyphics, Was yet obliged to give this job up as a bad one ami send the manu script baf k to its author for revision. Its e ditor, George Stroop, Ksq., is a thorough going Democrat, who furnishes his readers with an excellent am! reliable paper, deserving the liberal pa tronage of the Democracy 4f that section of l.lair county in which it is published. Ha has our hi st w ishes for his continued success. Tho C arrolltown Xeicr of last week says that Mrs. Sehultz, residing a few miles west, of Niektown, was foiunl hanging to her bed post with a hank of yarn around her neck, on Sunday morning last. Her Town Council recently passed an ordi nance forbidding the sale x,f the Pittsbnrgh .Suntiat Leader within thp. limits of that vil lage on the I,ord"s dny. On Saturday last, Dr William Pancoast, the celebrated s'urgein of Philadelphia, ar rived in Indiana for the purpose of examin ing a large tumor growing upon the breast of Mrs. Catharine White, the venerable mother of Gen. Harry White, He pro nounced the tumor to be a cancer, and con cluded to return ami cut it out in the course of a week or two. Her advauced age, coupled with the fact that her health lias been bail for some time, renders it necessary that her system shall be brought tip in order that the operation may not endanger her life We desire to attract the attention of our police to the fact that the most popular play thing with the boys just now is an instru ment known as the "gum sling." This con trivance, wtuse motive power is a strong piece of .gum, is capable of propelling a buckshot with enough force to nearly bury the missile its own depth in a pine board. It is therefore alnmt as dangerous a weapon as the ordinary p4c ket pistol, and several complaints of personal injuries received from chance shots have been lanl in, to say nothing of complaints of damage done to window glass in nouses. The sling is a nui sance, and as such ought to be abated. Up to the period of his recent removal to Altoona to accept a position in the car re cord office of the P. R. It., Mr. R. H. Thomp son was agent in Kbensburg for Messrs. Wanamaker tt Brown, the well known Phila delphia Oak Hali clothing firm. His brother, Uieut. J. M. A large assort ment of late samples for coats, vests and pantaloons has lately been received. Jacob Vannott, of Ligonier Valley, went to Johnstown a couple of months ago to work for the Cambria iron Company. He boarded at the bouse of a Mr. Williams-, from which, on the night of the 10th instant, he absconded, carrying with him two over coats, two dress coats, two pair of panta loons, vests, shirts, boots, neckties, an um brella, two watches and a pocketbook con taining twenty dollars in money. Policeman Roilgers shrewdly conjectured that the thief had returneil to his old home in Ligonier Valley, ami followed him thither last Mon day, capturing him on t'-e premises of a far mer namel Luke. He made no resistance. A portion ot tin: plunder was recovered and Jacob was brought hi ivc and locked up, to answer the charge of burglary at next Court. By far the largest single dee4i ever filed for record in Cambria county readied Re corder Lake's hands last week. It is the deed given by the State of Pennsylvania to the Pennsylvania Railroad Company for the old system" of internal improvements known as the "public works," the consideration in volveil being ?7,.".oo,(K)o. It is written on parchment, w ith here and there illuminated letters, and throughout displaying splendid penmanship, and the whole instrument is IhhuiiI np in a book of A2 X'agi-s. It was brought here by three custodians, and, after it had been spread upon the record by Dep uty Iatterner, was taken to the P. R. R. authorities on Wednesday morning last, un der special charge of John K. Si-anian, Ksq., to Altoona The document is esteemed of much value by the P. IJ. R. Billy Alt is the name of a Johnstown young man who has been in jail here f4r some time on the -harge of interfering with a police officer. He was in a cell with one Sclmartzinan and "Dump" Cuinn, and on Saturday morning hist, for no good reason, became intractable and destructive. Begin ning with loud y ells, he proceeded to smash the furniture in his cell and scatter the frag ments round in a most promiscuous manner, ably assiste4l in his exhibition of deviltry by Schwartzman. The refractory parties were placed in si'parate c-ells, the blind 4l.xrs closed n them, and their food shut off for a season. Thii had the effect of bringing them to time, and they vehemently promised to mend their behavior for the future, but no great amount of reliance is placed on their promises. An action for malicious mischief will doubtless be brought against them at next December Court. - Natoi-eon's Dr.KAM. It is said of Napo leou III. that in the second year of his reign his health began to decline. Dullness, drow siness and depressmntnuibled him, to which was added the torture of sleeplessness and batl dreams. These afllictlons worked upon his mind to an alarming extent. One of his dreams seems to have lieen projdietic, al though its first awful impressions were dis pelled by the return of health. He related to his Court Physician the vision of a throne, upon which he sat, amidst surroundings of pomp, glory and power. Suddenly the air darkened, peals of thunder shook the palace, lightning flashed into the imperial chamber, and tlw throne, crumbled to pieces. There are many similar eases, where the victims of a disordered lwvly anl mind are rendered in describably wretched from common causes. Dyspepsia, "rheumatism, pains in the siile, back and head ; nervous;debiIity, anil all ir regularities, cause untold misery. Sandaline clears the whole lxly of disease, and restores it to perfect health." Sandaline Cologne was the favorite perfume of the crowned heads of Eurojn: luring the palmy days of Napoleon HI.'s regime, having been introduced by the beautiful Empress Kugetiie.
