There was a hole in the gable end, alxnit twenty feet ; from the ground, and in it these birds : had made their n-st. It was the tirbt j year that they had built in that place. , A young f tinner and three or four of his friends, who had frequently observed the j owls entering and flying out of the cav- ' ity, resolved to examine the nest. On a i Sunday they tilaced a ladder against the i wall and insjiected th family of owls. , They found wveral young ones of extra- ; ordinary ugliness, and, according to their J own account, after examining them they i carefullv replaced theru iu the n st. t The parent birds did not that evening j apiiear to lx angered at the proceeding, i The next night, however, between , nine and ten oVhn-k, as the young far mer was returning home, followed by his jiervant man some six or wven jiaces , in the rear, on parsing by the wall in question lie heard a sound of wings and j a violent exclamation at the same time from the servant. The latter, in evident pain and alarm, held his bauds clasjied j over his right eye. He stated that the owl had flown suddenly down ujion him, j had driven her talons into his chin, and j then struck him in the eye with her , tieak. The blow, fortunately, did not fall on the eyeball, and was Dot followed by any mutilation. Upon examination there were to tie seen, lie-sides a violent ' bruise below the eye and two bleeding wounds on the chin, the unmistakable' imprint of the talons of the bird of night. 1 The next day witnessed a new act in ; the little drama. The owl was sjH'edily tried, condemned, and the suppression of the entire brood included in the sen- : tence. Execution followed in the after- , noon. The owls were absent or had tied at the raisine of the ladder ; but the nest was destroyed and the young ones killed. The death of the old birds was also decreed, and for an hour or more the young man and his friends made vain attempts to shoot them. They were provided with an excellent gun, ' but the movement of the birds was so rapid that all their efforts were unavail ing. Twilinght came on, and still the ; ow Is iert inaciously hovered in the neigh borhood of their ruined home. The friends. Iwroniing impatient, went away, and the increased darkness at length compelled the young man to give up I'is : pui jKN'. Just then the female owl llew into the dense foliaire of a tree. Into this the sportsman was almut to fire at hazard, when lie suddenly heard a vio lent rustling of wings and leaves ; the bird shot like an arrow across the thirty or forty feet of interval. M. F. receiv ! ed a lierre blow full on the left eye. and at the same time was conscious of the rapid apparition of two round, flaming eyes close to his face. The shock and the pain were so violent that M. F. fell backward on the ground. The owls ! llew away, and only reappeared at long intervals during the ensuing days. The : next morning, after a night of suffering, the two wounded men arrived at Lau sanne, the master in a car. with a band age over his left eye, and the sertant ; driving, with. a bandage over his riirlit. M. F., on the other hand, was seriously : injured. MOM)FKS OF THE MKROSFOPE. ESTABLISHED FOR THIRTV-F'HM F.W.MYM Innn t V otur. Take, for instance, theedpo of a razor. Now all our ideas of this fbject have ' been until otherwise taught by the mi croscopethat it was a jer!eetly smooth edge, without a single depression or pro jection, or 'nick,1 as commonly termed, alone its whole line, and hence "the preat aim of the bail K-r is to remove all such indentations or 'nick,"fi frmn the edre of his instrument supposing that this is in dispensable to its usefulness. Hut the very opjosite of this is the fact. When a first-class razor is in most pier- ; feet order, find is placed under the mi croscope, we find to our amazement that it is from heel to point a complete and most perfect saw, and if there is any where ahnip; its edge a space where these Haw teeth are not t-een, there the razor will I found to be dull and unfit for US'. The mot perfect razor, then, is the most perfect .aw. Now from this fact i ft very valuable lesson may be learned by those who make any use of this instui- i ment, either for hhavinpr, or as pome- ' times is necessary, for furical purposes where the keenest edpe is required. The lesson is this ; that just as a common saw : operates most effectively by having the teeth leaning in the direction in which the saw i-j propelled so these minute s teeth of the razor should incline in the ; Btitne way, in order to do its work most ; satisfactorily. But how shall t his projicr ! Inclination, of these invisible teeth be obtained ? , The method is very simple and can easily and successfully lie adopted by all. First, to act intell:pentlv here, it' will be remembered that, in the act of shav ing, the razor is drawn from heel to point. Further, as in using a common aw, we could not propel it most effect ively with the inclination of tlie teeth reversed that is, leaning toward the beel so in the use of the razor we must . have an inclination of these minute teeth . to secure the best results that is, thev j too must incline inthedirection in which the instrument is propelled, that is, from point to heel, the opposite direction of those in the carpenter's saw. This direction of these i lfinitisimal teeth iH obtained by the simple act in sharpening, of propelling the razor on hone or tablet from point to heel and never reversing the motion. Anv one tryinff this will b? surprised to find" how 1 much improved is his razor's edge. For this discovery we are indebted wholly to the microscope. i The writer, until learning from this wonder revealing instrument the real character of the razor's edge, was accus tomed to do as commonlv practiced ' draw the instrument over hone or tablet from heel to point ; but a little reflection convinced him that this was not the lst method, and tho first experiment satis fied him that his reasoning was correct. PKCTI.TAKmESOV SoIF. ANIMALS. Cats are affectionate; thev love voung chickens, sweet cream and "the best place in front of the fireplace. Dogs are very faithful ; they will stick to a bone when everyhndv else has ; deserted it. The donkey is an emblem of patience; but if you study him closer von will find that laziness is what is the "matter with him. The eagle is the monarch of the Fkies but the little king-bird will chase him to his hiding-place. Monkeys are imitative ; but if they can't imitate some mischief, they are not happy. Hens know when it is going to rain, and 6helter themselves; but they will try to hatch out a glass egg just as hon estly as they will one of their own. The elephant has tho least, and the rabbit th most, eyes for its size ; and a rat's tail is just the length of its body. Tho roof of the thoroughbred dog's mouth is always black ; so is thelx.ttom of a cat's foot who is a good miniser. Tlie serpent and the era change their clothing each year ; and he raccoon lives all the winter long on the memory of i what he ate in the summer. j To rid elost-ts of ants, use green iep ! iTijiint ficsi'wtly.
