When completed, this commingling of elegant art with bountiful nature will make the great Horseshoe Rend the most delightful spot for the tourist's eye todweilon that can be found in America. Large numbers of w ild ducks have been paying visits to tlie several dams below town during the present week, and a goodly num ber are being bagged by sportsmen. , f,w w ib geese have been seen, but so far as heard from they have been seen only at a distance too great for even telescopic sights. They are r-r wild. A champion pie-eating match is tube en diilged in at the Altoona Opera House to morrow evening. A prize of f ". will be ghen the boy who inside a stated time puts him self outside the largest circumference of pie, and his body, should lie fortunately chance to die, will lie interred at the expense of the management. John Rorabaugli, F.sip, of Croyie town ship, proposes to try his luck before the next Democratic county convention for the office: of Poor House Director, and beingan honest man. a respected citizen, and a consistent, hard-working Democrat, we are sure the honor could Tint fall tty.on a move worthy or more competent gentleman. Next ' Annie Raddigan, a fifteen-year-old Al toona girl, was standing looking at a bonfire which some boys had built in the streets, w hen a shower of sparks settled on her cloth ing and ignited it. She ran, and of course was soon enveloped in flames, and before an overcoat could be wrapped around her was very badly though not tatallv burned. Mrs. Margaret Slirum," of Johnstown, failed to live peaceably with her sister-in-law, Mrs. ( M-orge liohmann, under whose roof she found shelter, and w as turned adrift. I'.eing in indigent circumstances, she was brought here the latter part of last week and located in the Poor House. Her husband lives in Philadelphia, and is said to be in good finan cial circumstances. Mr. John I!. Rrookbauk, somewhat noted as a hunter and tisherinan, died suddenly at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. Jonathan Jones, in Cambria township, on last Satur day morning. He was a brother of Mrs. Susan Rhey and Mrs. John Dougherty, and was aged about 7.1 years. His wife, who lives in this place, and several grown-up children, survive him. A midiile-agcil tramp named l.ake was struck by the Philadelphia Kx press near I.illy'sstation last Friday ev, ming ami knock ed into a convenient ditch. 1 1 is' explanation of the accident w as that he had stepped from one track to the other to avoid an approach ing train, and had forgot to look behind to see whet her the coast was clear, lie was removed to Callitzin, where his injuries received medi cal treatment. John Lingafelt, Ks.. for the past ten years postmaster of Hollida vsburg. died last Friday night, aged li.l years. In itoth his public and private relations he was highlv cstcemed and his death has caused a void which will long be perceptible. His succes sor as postmaster has not been named, though tin ic are iiuite a number of applicants for the position, among w hom may be mentioned our former tow nsman, Col. Wm. K. Piper. The stock of groceries, etc., belonging to Mr. .. C. Parrish has been removed from their former location, adjoining Mrs. K. Mc Donald's residence, High street, to the build ing one door west of Huntley's hardware store. This is a temporary arrangement, to permit a new and stylish structure to be erected on the vacated site, which, when completed, will be tenanted by Mr. Parrish in his capacity of grocer and confectioner. The dwell ing house of ex- ongressman Prosser, of Nashville, Tennessee, with a por tion of his valuable library , was destroyed by tire on the ."th inst. Those of our readers vv ho a ijuarter of a century ago used to go to school to Mr. Prosser in the little frame pub lic school building in the Ka-t ward, yet standing, w ill be sorry to hear of this groat loss which has befallen him. and which is est ima ted at about flo.iiiiii, vv it h no insurance. He is said, hovv ev cr, to be insane, and may re p eat the experiment at any moment. 'I In' puddlers of the Altoona Iron Com pany, to the number of ts, iUv on a strike, or rather have been debarred from work by their employers. This result is said to have been accomplished through the instrument ality of a se.-rct trades' union, and due notice is uiveii to the members thereof by Dr. S. C. Raker, President of the Companyj that here after when they want work they shall apply at some other mill. A similar plan was pursued at the Johnstown iron works live years a go. and was found efficacious to prevent a similar experiment. Meantime, the Al toona mill is lying idle, but will be blown in ae.iin so .soon as other woikmen can be en j.'a god. The Lancaster TntrVi;irn;r says Congress used to be bond interminably by "the presen tation and reading of all sotts of petitions. Now there is a petition box in front of tin clerk's desk, and the Hon. John Smith or Jones steps up to the box and drops in his pet it ion w it Ii t he proper endorsement on it, and tlie name of the committee to which he wants it referred. The clerks take them out at the close of the day, and they appear in the record. This ballot was the invention or the result of a suggestion by one of those practi cal men w ho do get into ( 'on gross sometimes : the Hon. .lhn Reilly, of Pennsylvania, the railroad man who was sent from the Altoona district a few years ago. The woolen mill in the Fast ward former ly managed bv the McLaughlin Rrothers, with ail its fixtures, such as a steam engine, machinery, etc., and .V acres of ground, was sold at public sale on Tuesday afternoon by Mr. Dwight Jones, assignee of Messrs. A. . and Ceo. W. Jones. The purchasers were Messrs. V. H. Rarker, F..1. Janu s and Alvin Fvans, and the price bid was $l,t'.t. When it is borne in mind that this property was sold about three years ago with fi'i.iHiu as the nioi-.ey consideration, and that at least f t.ono worth of improvements has since been added to it, it will be rightly conjectured that the huvers have found a nargainin the purchase. What disposition is to be made of the mill whether it shall be put into running order at once, or held over subject to lease by other parties has not vet been determined. On Monday of this week, a bird w hich is a stranger to this latitude was shot by a son of Mr. Jonathan Jones on the farm of that gentleman in Cambria township. It was brought to town and placed in the store of Mr. Ceorge Huntley for inspection. Some persons pronounced it a veritable American eagle: others thought it might be a crane, while yet others said that if it wasn't a bit tern they knew nothing of ornithology. Fi nally, the bird was authoritatively identified as a falcon, and Mr. Huntley was so much pleased at learning its mime that he took im mediate measures toward hiving it stuffed and preserved as a curiosity a fact which lends us to remark that the gentleman named has several birds and beasts on exhibition at his -toie which have been put through the taad. rmal process by Mr. Jesse S. Ilolsin ger, who seems to be quite an adept in the biisini ss. A short distance north of town in w hat is known as the "sulphur springs," and ad jacent to that in an eastward direction, on the edge of a woods, is a log hut of rough construction. An otbeer of an enquiring tin ii of mind paid this hut a visit the other day, to dis'-over what manner of business was transacted therein. He found a small loom containing a fire-place, an iron pot or two. some impromptu b :n hes, a pac kage of salt and one of pepper, and the fragments of a bottle w hich once contained w hiskey, w hi!e all annuel were, scattered grant quantities of fti'ifrj. In a word, this was the headquar ters of the gang of chicken thieves w ho for some considerable time past have afflicted this community. It is a pity none of the frequenters of the hut were at home on the occasion of the visitation, but imismaeh asthe names of a majority are known to the police, they are pretty stid to meet their just deserts i:i one eoiirs" of tiuje. We told out leadei.s last week to ivad C.eorge Huntley's new advertisement, and promised this week to sav something elabo rate about the same. We take back the elaborate part of that promise, and now sug gest in very plain words that if a hardware store in the interior of Pennsylvania can be found which contains a larger or more de sirable stock of evervthingiUsually"or unus ually found in an establishment of" that char acter, we would like to know where it is h cated that's all. So mote it be. On Monday of this week, a colored vouth named Jo;-. Roberts Was arrested by officer W iierley on a charge of carrying concealed weapons pre fen ed by Mr. Thomas Nipple. In a hearing had before Esquire Kinkead, it was established that bad blood had existed between the two for some time previous, growing out of circumstances not necessary to enumerate, and that a climax was reached on the day named. No blows were passed, but in the midst of a wordy altercation Joe whipped out a pistol and purposed to blow out the brains of Nipple. When first ques tioned by the 'Squire, Joe positively denied having had a pistol in his possession : but when this fact was proven against him, he declared that it wasn't loaded, and even if it had been, the lock was in such condition that it could not be discharged. He only wanted t scare Nipple. The case was thought to be hardly of the magnit ude which would justify the binding over of the defend ant to answer at Court, and so he was dis charged, with warning given that if he came ii again for a similar infl iction of the laws he Would be severely dealt with. The costs were paid by Joe's aunt, a genteel lady of color. Haw ker, Reilly and Kurt are the names of three individuals w ho were brought here from Johnstown last week and lodged in jail. The two former are charged with ag gravated assault ami battery on the per -on of Mr. II. P. Friedhoff, watchman lor the Oatitier Steel Company, and the latter is thought to have raised a rumpus in the family circle with his fists. The three were put in a cell together, and their united streiigt li seems to have been such that some time last Mon day night they succeeded in forcing their way through the wall into the corridor. The hole cut through the solid wall is large enough to afford egress to the largest man. and was made with a bit of hard wood. When they reached the corridor, they found yet a couple more walls to dig through before they could acheive their liberty, and their uncompleted task was broken in" on by the early meiidng visit of Turnkey McNamara. That gentle man found the three worthies in bed. seem ingly fast asleep, and apparently ignorant of how the cell could have been "damaged in such a manner unless it was struck by light ning during the night. They were assigned to separate cells, and no more trouble from them is apprehended. Hawker is an old of fender. At March term two years ago, he was sent by Judge Dean to "the Western Penitentiary for two years for a burglary committed i'n Johnstown, and had emerged from that institution only a couple of weeks before his arrest on the present charge. Reilly comes from New Jersey, and did not thesiatueof limitation intervene to cut off an indictment, he would go back to that State after we are through wii'i hhn lu re to answer a most serums charge.
