USSR'S' - TVUKIS1I GAlirilTS, HOW AND WHERE TIIETASE MALE AN INTEKE3T1NU DESCIUF IION. Three small towns Otishnk, Koula ; and GLionJos, within the boundaries of Greater Phrygia, in Asia Minor, ! have preserved to the present day the carpet manufacture, one ot tne few re maining branches of Turkish industry ; and h is rather an intertstiur point to note that this manufacture has not much changed its locality ficin time immemorial. Oushnk, the largest of the three towns above mentioned, is situated on an elevated plateau between 2,000 and 3,000 feet above the level of the sea. It has a population of over 15,000 in- 1 habitants, of which only about a third : are Christians. The houses are built; of sun-dried bricks in the usml style of modern Turkish towns, and p!a- tered over inside and out with a sort ; of dark clay, which gives the place a j sombre appearance perfectly in keeping with the character of its people. (Juahit old fountains and wells, , mosques and minarets, overhanging j latticed balconies, r.nd dark, iia-row, i crooked and dirty streets characterize the place even more than other towns i iiearer the seaboard. "Wool in every stage of progression, from the moment it is clipped frjm the sheep to its lin:d i rived and spun state, fit for the hands j of the manufacturer, meets the eye in t every direction, and indicates the pe-j Miliar occupation of the inhabitant of this busy little town, which, but for this industry, would in all probability have shared the decaying tendency of HT 3G2 rSO embused msn-m tears. . i - reduction i ; fit ll SOI i . The mechanism employed is of the simplest and rudest description. A vertical frame supports two hori zontal rollers about live feet apart. The warp, of anv required length, consisting of an upper and lower thread, is wound around the upper j roller, and the ends fastened to the lower one, from which the work is j commenced by the women Mid girls, ! who kneel or sit cross legged in a row . before the frame. Each work woman has a certain width of work allotted to j her, anil proceeds to knot the tufts j which form the pile in rows, using I different colors to form the pattern, i Kach tuft is knotted independently of the others to an upper and a lower thread of the warp. When a row is thus tied the tuft is passed with the ( hand between the warp, and then beaten down with a heavy wooden I f )inb. The pile is now clipped smooth j with a large pair of shears, and the ; next row ulove the first commenced with. As the work proceeds upward j it is rolled over the under roller, and a corresponding length of warp unrolled , from the upper one, until the required length of carpet is made. The tying of the tufts and the p'eking out of the variously colored wools which hang in balls over the frame, is carried on with the most surpiising rapidity, the j pattern being meanwhile worked from memory, unle-s some new design is to I 1m made. Forty-four ro.vs of pile are thus knotted in the course of the day, and for this am sunt of labor each workwoman is paid from six to twelve cents daily. It will thus le seen that the women are the sole uiaiiufactureis, that no mechanism or instruments beyond a frame, shears and comb are u-ed. ami that the design is woik from memory. Yet, with such limit means at their disposal, these skillful workers contrive to produce the mot harmoniously colored a::d ceitainly the mo-t durable carpets in the world. We have so far spoken only of the women; the nidi's share of the inrius trv is to collect and rive the wool fur the manufaetuiers, and manage the sale of the carpets when completed tasks light enough, compared to the irksome labor of the females, but quite consistent with the Oriential notion of man's superiority over the less favored sex. The dyes which by their per manency have given much of the celebrity to the Turkey carpet, arc mostly produced in the neighborhood. Ma.lder roots for the reds, and yellow lorries for the yellow and orange, are grown in the surrounding districts, and indigo for the blue is imported from abroad. The carpets and rugs ot (jhiordess and Koula, the other two manufacturing towns, are made on precisely the same principle and in the same primitive manner as those of Oushuk, but tlie work is of a liner description, and the colors livelier and more suited to the tastes of American purchasers than the somewhat darker ppen ranee of the Oushak carpets, which are in almost general use for dining-rooms in Englaud. it?ON, nails, n i. ?s, ni.Assw.AKr:. lamps, LAMP CHIMNEYS.
