Tt n probably not generally Known
that the region in which "(icneral
(JoiuKo 1.1s been lately operating with
li is Cossacks is the la ml whence by
far the greatest quantity of attar of
roses comes to western Europe. Kas
anl.k.i the name which has so often
figured liming the past fortnight as a
point of strategical importance, is also
the centre of one of the most remarka
ble species of horticulture, or rather
agriculture, to be found in the whole
world.
Around it, or near it, are the dis
tricts of Cirpan, Uiopea, Karadshah
Ihigh, Kojun-Tepe, Ycni Saghra, all of I
which arc devoted to this peculiar
husbandry. The .Mussulman tradition
Assigns the origin of the rose to the
l ight of Mohammed's journey to
heaven. The white roses sprang from
the drops of sweat which fell from the
blessed forehead of the prophet him
self in the toilsome ascent; the sweat
of llorak, the miraculous animal he
rode, gave birth to the yellow ones;
while the celestial drops which fell
from tiabriel were the source of the
red rose. The appearance of the
neighborhood of Kasanlik would favor
a suspicion that the heavenward jour
ney must have sorely tried the arch
angel, and Count von Moltke, who
was well acquainted with 15ulga:ia
an 1 the lialkant, has sty'ed the valley
of the Tundj.i "the Cashmere of Eu
rope, the Turkish (Julistan, the Lund
of Hoses."
Hoses are not grown there as with
11s in isolated patches in gardens, but
in fields and in lidges as if the' were
no better than potatoes. It would be
dillicult to imagine anything more
charming than the appearance of
those rose fields ; and any painter who
should attempt to reproduce this pic
ture would assuredly be charged with
exaggeration. JJut it would 'm im
possible to catch the infinite altera
tions of color both among the roses
themselves and the green leaves of the
shrubs. Hundreds of millions of rose
leaves sticw the ground and are use
less for the chief object in view. It
is calculated that about one-fourth of
the leaves are lost in his nay ; per
haps as much more cither fail to come
to the requisite perfection or are un
avoidably wasted. The entire pro
duce of the tekne, or region, of which
Kasanlik is the centre, is estimated at
eight hundred or nine hundred kilo
grammes (from one hundred and
ninety-live to two hundred and twenty
imperial gallons) of ro-e oil. The
wealth of water in the valley is prodi
gious ; springs are not only numerous
but most abundant in yield. There is
a gencial system of ii ligation which,
remembering that the country is Bul
garia and ni t Lonibardy, is admira
ble. The whole valley was a picture
of prosperity ; the result of natural
fertd ty carefully tended by human
industry. Where roses are now culti
vated, heavy crops of maize are gath
ered, and along the slopes and down
by the watcrsMe are numerous herds
and flocks. Kasanlik itself is a town
of ten thousand inhabitants, and is
surrounded by magnificent walnut
wootls, which arc also a source of
commercial industry.

This wonderful binl lives only in

, tor selecting a large leaf hanging from
. the eml of a twig, it pierces a number
j of holes along the elgcs of it with this
I awl like beak: it then frets the Ions:
' fibres of plants, which make capital j

into a complete bag. But strange and
cleverer still, if the leaf is not large
i enough, the bird will get another leaf,

togetlier. Now let inetell you a very
singular thing, but something that is
t'ue. Sometimes this good tailor has
been known to tie a knot at the eml
I cf the thread, so as to be sure it does :
' not slin throuzli! Have not some of!
j ns, some time or other, been in dis
i tress for waut of a knot at the end of
our tLreaii, ana signen over nan a
dozen stitehes put in, wlien out they
all came with the end of t'.ie thread in
Hie air, just for want of a knot in it '!
Next time we'll remember the tailor
bird and his knots, won't we? Now
I perhaps you are wondering how eggs
' can lie and birds be hatched between
j a couple of leaves? So listen to ine
while! tell you all about it. 1 lie
leaves are only the outer walls of a
snug little house. The inside is made
entirely of soft white down, and this
makes one of the most comfortable
IkhIs possible for the eggs that arc in
tended to lie upon it. The door to
this dear little house is at the top, and
the whole nest is built in such a way
that it does not look like a nest, and
is often taken lor nothing but a bunch
of leaves on t lie tree. The bird and
its nest full of eggs are so very light
that the very cud of the slenderest
twig will support both houe and fam
ily. This little t iilor is entirely yel
low in color, and is only three inches
long. Wouldn't you like to see this
tiny, clever thing hard at work sew
ing up its nest, selecting the leaves,
and then carrying to them the long
pieces of thread, and piercing the
holes with its beak, and drawing the
thread through them ? What a dear
little tailor the bird is !
The Hain Trkk. The Consul of ;
the United Stages of Columbia in the

written from Vurimaguasto President j
Prado, informing him that in the !
woods adjacent to the city of Moyo- 1
bainba exists a t ree called by the na- !
lives Tamai-caspi (raiii tree), which
possesses some rcmai kahle qualities. '
It is a tree of about lift ecu meters
(about fifty feet) high when at matur-
ity, and of about one meter in diame- i
ter at the lace, mi 1 has the property
of absoihing an immense quantity of
humidity from the atmosphere, which
it concentrates and subsequently pours
lorth from its haves and branches in
a shower, and in such abundance that
in many cases the ground in the neigh- '
borhood is converted into a perfect
bog. It possesses this curious proper
ty in its greatest degree in the sum
mer, precisely when the rivers are at
their lowest and water most scarce;
and the writer proposes that it should
be planted in the moie arid regions of
Peru, for the benefit of agi ieultu lists. ,
