1 xiz; laxi or jiosks. Tt n probably not generally Known that the region in which "(icneral (JoiuKo 1.1s been lately operating with li is Cossacks is the la ml whence by far the greatest quantity of attar of roses comes to western Europe. Kas anl.k.i the name which has so often figured liming the past fortnight as a point of strategical importance, is also the centre of one of the most remarka ble species of horticulture, or rather agriculture, to be found in the whole world. Around it, or near it, are the dis tricts of Cirpan, Uiopea, Karadshah Ihigh, Kojun-Tepe, Ycni Saghra, all of I which arc devoted to this peculiar husbandry. The .Mussulman tradition Assigns the origin of the rose to the l ight of Mohammed's journey to heaven. The white roses sprang from the drops of sweat which fell from the blessed forehead of the prophet him self in the toilsome ascent; the sweat of llorak, the miraculous animal he rode, gave birth to the yellow ones; while the celestial drops which fell from tiabriel were the source of the red rose. The appearance of the neighborhood of Kasanlik would favor a suspicion that the heavenward jour ney must have sorely tried the arch angel, and Count von Moltke, who was well acquainted with 15ulga:ia an 1 the lialkant, has sty'ed the valley of the Tundj.i "the Cashmere of Eu rope, the Turkish (Julistan, the Lund of Hoses." Hoses are not grown there as with 11s in isolated patches in gardens, but in fields and in lidges as if the' were no better than potatoes. It would be dillicult to imagine anything more charming than the appearance of those rose fields ; and any painter who should attempt to reproduce this pic ture would assuredly be charged with exaggeration. JJut it would 'm im possible to catch the infinite altera tions of color both among the roses themselves and the green leaves of the shrubs. Hundreds of millions of rose leaves sticw the ground and are use less for the chief object in view. It is calculated that about one-fourth of the leaves are lost in his nay ; per haps as much more cither fail to come to the requisite perfection or are un avoidably wasted. The entire pro duce of the tekne, or region, of which Kasanlik is the centre, is estimated at eight hundred or nine hundred kilo grammes (from one hundred and ninety-live to two hundred and twenty imperial gallons) of ro-e oil. The wealth of water in the valley is prodi gious ; springs are not only numerous but most abundant in yield. There is a gencial system of ii ligation which, remembering that the country is Bul garia and ni t Lonibardy, is admira ble. The whole valley was a picture of prosperity ; the result of natural fertd ty carefully tended by human industry. Where roses are now culti vated, heavy crops of maize are gath ered, and along the slopes and down by the watcrsMe are numerous herds and flocks. Kasanlik itself is a town of ten thousand inhabitants, and is surrounded by magnificent walnut wootls, which arc also a source of commercial industry. Von -Moltke speaks of the situation as one of the raiest beaut v. .Many r!tlu I rep he snr rover in evtent I ' - ' . . About twent3 -!ive miles to the southeast of Kasanlik, and divided from the Tundja valley by a range of hills, is Kski Saghra, a town of eighteen thousand inhabitants, also a notable industrial centre, the best silk and finest wheat in Turkey being pn duce 1 in the surrouudiuir district AVith such diligent husbandmen moderately fair government would pooh make the whole southern Uulga liatho richest and most productive country in I'urope. The campaign of which these beautiful and fertile val leys are now the theatre will have probably ruined the ro-e culture, nt leusl for many a year. London Tinto: Is CoiKKE Wholesome. I know it is palatable, as very few people dis like it; but many eschew it on account of its deleterious effects. Its odor in pr'paiing is delicious, far more so than the actual drinking of it. Jinleeil, the most i.oteu physicians , protest against its use beyond a single ' cup at breakfast, in which proportion ! it can be taken with safety. Uut where it is profusely indulged in, it is as injurious to health as any alcoholic stimulant. If one pound of coffee should be used so as to last a family of ten persons for a week, I i-ee it ! f-t ited no hurtful results would ensue. P. ut here it should stop. I should think, however, that by persons ac customed to severe outdoor exercise or labor of any kind, it could to a lar- ; ger extent be taken with safety. Chil dren should never touch it, or tea . citner, except the latter 1; very weak, j The old fashioned way of making cof- ! fee is undoubtedly tli3 best, which is ' to buy the col'ee in the grain, scorch j it until a light brown, anil grind it as ' is wanted.
